    On Design and Realization of New Generation Misson-critial Application Systems

    Mission-critical system typically refers to a project or system for which the success is vital to the mission of the underlying organization. The failure or delayed completion of the tasks in mission-critical systems may cause severe financial loss, even human casualties. For example, failure of an accurate and timely forecast of Hurricane Rita in September 2005 caused enormous financial loss and several deaths. As such, real-time guarantee and reliability have always been two key foci of mission-critical system design. Many factors affect real-time guarantee and reliability. From the software design perspective, which is the focus of this paper, three aspects are most important. The first of these is how to design a single application to effectively support real-time requirement and improve reliability, the second is how to integrate different applications in a cluster environment to guarantee real-time requirement and improve reliability, and the third is how to effectively coordinate distributed applications to support real-time requirements and improve reliability. Following these three aspects, this dissertation proposes and implements three novel methodologies: real-time component based single node application development, real-time workflow-based cluster application integration, and real-time distributed admission control. For ease of understanding, we introduce these three methodologies and implementations in three real-world mission-critical application systems: single node mission-critical system, cluster environment mission-critical system, and wide-area network mission-critical system. We study full-scale design and implementation of these mission-critical systems, more specifically: 1) For the single node system, we introduce a real-time component based application model, a novel design methodology, and based on the model and methodology, we implement a real-time component based Enterprise JavaBean (EJB) System. Through component based design, efficient resource management and scheduling, we show that our model and design methodology can effectively improve system reliability and guarantee real-time requirement. 2) For the system in a cluster environment, we introduce a new application model, a real-time workflow-based application integration methodology, and based on the model and methodology, we implement a data center management system for the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) project. We show that our methodology can greatly simplify the design of such a system and make it easier to meet deadline requirements, while improving system reliability through the reuse of fully tested legacy models. 3) For the system in a wide area network, we narrow our focus to a representative VoIP system and introduce a general distributed real-time VoIP system model, a novel system design methodology, and an implementation. We show that with our new model and architectural design mechanism, we can provide effective real-time requirement for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)

    Service-Oriented Computing for intelligent train maintenance

    The purpose of this work is to apply the servicization of enterprise information systems in maintenance, particularly in the management of the maintenance process of the component parts of trains. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural approach that permits servicization since it provides a flexible set of design principles used during the modeling practices (abstraction and realization). With a view to supporting the model-driven engineering of software systems, Mode Driven Architecture (MDA) is a design approach delivering a set of guidelines for the configuring of specifications in systems development. Therefore, the combination of these two approaches can be fruitful to address the challenging issues the enterprise information system is facing today. Our study is based on a methodological approach using the MDA models for the automatic generation of web service. The case study concerns a Railways Maintenance Workshop (RMW) at Sidi Bel Abbes (Algeria). Finally, the information system for the management of maintenance of the component parts of passengers and baggage railcars, using the generated solution, is realized and deployed. This software helps to have better management of the RMW by the effective planning of interventions, improve performance by increasing reliability, traceability, and availability of the equipment (parts)

    A framework for adaptive monitoring and performance management of component-based enterprise applications

    Most large-scale enterprise applications are currently built using component-based middleware platforms such as J2EE or .NET. Developers leverage enterprise services provided by such platforms to speed up development and increase the robustness of their applications. In addition, using a component-oriented development model brings benefits such as increased reusability and flexibility in integrating with third-party systems. In order to provide the required services, the application servers implementing the corresponding middleware specifications employ a complex run-time infrastructure that integrates with developer-written business logic. The resulting complexity of the execution environment in such systems makes it difficult for architects and developers to understand completely the implications of alternative design options over the resulting performance of the running system. They often make incorrect assumptions about the behaviour of the middleware, which may lead to design decisions that cause severe performance problems after the system has been deployed. This situation is aggravated by the fact that although application servers vary greatly in performance and capabilities, many advertise a similar set of features, making it difficult to choose the one that is the most appropriate for their task. The thesis presents a methodology and tool for approaching performance management in enterprise component-based systems. By leveraging the component platform infrastructure, the described solution can nonintrusively instrument running applications and extract performance statistics. The use of component meta-data for target analysis, together with standards-based implementation strategies, ensures the complete portability of the instrumentation solution across different application servers. Based on this instrumentation infrastructure, a complete performance management framework including modelling and performance prediction is proposed. Most instrumentation solutions exhibit static behaviour by targeting a specified set of components. For long running applications, a constant overhead profile is undesirable and typically, such a solution would only be used for the duration of a performance audit, sacrificing the benefits of constantly observing a production system in favour of a reduced performance impact. This is addressed in this thesis by proposing an adaptive approach to monitoring which uses execution models to target profiling operations dynamically on components that exhibit performance degradation; this ensures a negligible overhead when the target application performs as expected and a minimum impact when certain components under-perform. Experimental results obtained with the prototype tool demonstrate the feasibility of the approach in terms of induced overhead. The portable and extensible architecture yields a versatile and adaptive basic instrumentation facility for a variety of potential applications that need a flexible solution for monitoring long running enterprise applications
