1989 Commencement Address: Bryant Gumbel

Bryant Gumbel, host of NBC\u27s Today Show, will receive an honorary degree, Doctor of Public Service, from the College of the Holy Cross and address this year’s graduates during the College’s Commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m. on the campus. Gumbel, the Today program host since January 1982, has anchored NBC news, sports and entertainment broadcasts from around the globe and across the country, including NBC\u27s coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea. Gumbel has received numerous awards for broadcasting and journalism, including the Edward R. Murrow Award for Outstanding Foreign Affairs Work, the Edward Weintal Prize for diplomatic reporting, 1986 Broadcaster of the Year, the Graham McNamee Award, and the 1988 NAACP Image Award. Following graduation from Bates College, Gumbel was a sportswriter for Black Sports magazine. He entered broadcasting as a sportscaster for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles in 1972, where he remained until 1980. Interview with Sir Shridath Ramphal, conducted 23rd November 2013 in London and 29th January 2015 in Bridgetown, Barbados, as part of the Commonwealth Oral History Project. The project aims to produce a unique digital research resource on the oral history of the Commonwealth since 1965 through sixty oral history interviews with leading figures in the recent history of the organisation. Characterization of plankton from the Galveston estuary

The purpose of this report is to summarize the published studies on phytoplankton and zooplankton in the Galveston Estuary. Before this project had begun, it was determined that there was insufficient long term data on plankton in the Galveston Estuary to attempt trend analysis. Information on phytoplankton species diversity, biomass and primary production, along with information on zooplankton species diversity and abundance, is summarized. This information is compared to similar data on other Texas and United States estuaries where available. Recommendations for a long term monitoring program are made. A bibliography of all Galveston Estuary plankton studies and an annotated bibliography of the major studies and publications are available in the GBNEP Information Center.Marine Scienc

Pentatomidae (Heteroptera) of Honduras : a checklist with description of a new ochlerine genus

Through collecting, surveys of museum collections, and search of the literature, we are able to list 181 species of Pentatomidae as occurring within the boundaries of the Republic of Honduras. Most of these, 129, around 70%, are widespread in the American tropics. Twenty-nine species are new country records, reported for Honduras for the first time. Four species of pentatomids are endemic to Honduras including a new genus and species of ochlerine (Discocephalinae) herein described. Although a few species extend from South America into Honduras (the Gondwanan element), and a few from North America extend into Honduras (the Nearctic element), the most important faunal element is one which is native to nuclear Central America.Con colectas, revisiones de las colecciones de museos, y revisiones de literaturas, se puede enumerar 181 especies de Pentatomidae distribuidas dentro de los límites de la república de Honduras. Britain and Latin America: 'Hope in a Time of Change?'

In the first section we propose briefly to look at the history of British-Latin American relations since the 1930s to emphasise what is perhaps common knowledge: the steady decline in the relationship, which reached its lowest point during the war in the South Atlantic in 1982. Although this story has already been told elsewhere, we summarise it here both to provide a backdrop and to illustrate the contrasts with the later period. We will then turn to an examination of the recent signs of revival. Using parliamentary records, some official unpublished documents, newspaper publications, and other secondary material, we will look at the evidence that points to a relative renewal of Anglo-Latin American relationship in the past decade. The last section of the paper will consider the limitations of this revival before speculating about the prospects for the long-term strengthening of British ties with Latin America

Observations on the ecology of Hepsetus odoe, Bloch, 1794 (Pisces: Hepsetidae) in Epie Creek floodplain, Niger Delta, Nigeria

The distribution, abundance, age and growth, the food and feeding habits, condition factor and reproduction of Hepsetus odoe in the Epie Creek Floodplain (Nigeria) was studied. H. odoe occur in the creek, swamp channel and lake. It is a very common, abundant and one of the major commercial species. A total of 457 specimens weighing 76.90 kg were caught during the period of investigation. The catches were more abundant in the dry season than in the wet season. The total length ranged from 10 cm to 46 cm while the weight varied between 50 g and 900 g. Six distinct components or year classes were observed using Bhattacharya's method. A growth exponential value 'b' was 3.35 with condition factor, 'k' values ranging from 0.69 to 0.83. The main diets of Hepsetus odoe were fish, including crustaceans (shrimps) and insects. The mean fecundity was 6060 plus or minus 358 eggs (range 2,769 to 6.667 eggs). The ova diameter of H. odoe was found to range from 2.2 mm to 2.6 mm with overall mean = 2.4 plus or minus 0.1
