Archival research on absorption lines in violently star-forming galaxies

    Get PDF
A computerized analysis of a starburst model is discussed. The model proposes that the absorption line equivalent width should scale with the level of star forming activity. Archival International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) data on IUE spectra of luminous blue galaxies were compared with previous IUE observations of extragalactic HII regions and low luminosity galaxies. The comparisons are summarized and causes for offsets are discussed

Mg II h + k emission lines as stellar activity indicators of main sequence F-K stars

The main purpose of this study is to use the IUE spectra in the analysis of magnetic activity of main sequence F-K stars. Combining IUE observations of MgII and optical spectroscopy of Ca II, the registry of ctivity of stars can be extended in time. We retrieved all the high-resolution spectra of F, G, and K main sequence stars observed by IUE (i.e. 1623 spectra of 259 F to K dwarf stars). We obtained the continuum surface flux near the Mg II h+k lines near 2800 \AA and the MgII line-core surface flux from the IUE spectra. We obtained a relation between the mean continuum flux near the MgII lines with the colour BVB-V of the star. For a set of 117 nearly simultaneous observations of Mg II and Ca II fluxes of 21 F5 to K3 main sequence stars, we obtained a colour dependent relation between the Mount Wilson CaII S-index and the MgII emission line-core flux. As an application of this calibration, we computed the Mount Wilson index for all the dF to dK stars which have high resolution IUE spectra. For some of the most frequently observed main sequence stars, we analysed the Mount Wilson index S from the IUE spectra, together with the ones derived from visible spectra. We confirm the cyclic chromospheric activity of epsilon Eri (HD 22049) and beta Hydri (HD 2151), and we find a magnetic cycle in alpha Cen B (HD 128621). Temperature determinations of hot DA white dwarfs using IUE continuum fluxes

    Get PDF
Effective temperatures of 15 DA white dwarfs hotter than 20,000 K were derived from low-dispersion far ultraviolet spectra obtained with IUE. The analysis was carried out by comparing the observed far ultraviolet fluxes with model fluxes scaled to the V-band flux. Accurate calibration of the IUE spectra is critical for this analysis. Observations at all epochs were corrected to the 1980 IUE calibration using the time-dependent corrections of Bohlin (1988). Taking advantage of the smooth and well-defined continuum fluxes provided by DA white dwarfs, seven white dwarfs for which accurate, independent temperature determinations were made from line profile analyses were used to improve the accuracy of the IUE flux calibration. The correction to the original calibration is as great as 20 percent in individual 5 A wavelength bins, while the average over the IUE wavelength range is 5 percent. The final calibration correction and the temperatures for the hot white dwarfs are presented

Environmental test report for the WX-32335 SEC camera tube

    Get PDF
The environmental testing activity on the WX-32335 was carried out to determine if this tube type could withstand the environmental requirements established for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) camera tube (WX-32224). The results of the tests led to the following conclusions: (1) The WX-32335 as processed with a CsTe photocathode surface can withstand the temperature extremes established for the IUE camera tube without damage to the photocathode surface or without introducing background signal in the tube after one hour of dark integration. (2) The WX-32335 built with a WX-32224 type target support structure can withstand the sinusoidal vibration requirements established for the IUE camera tube. (3) Although the vibration test of the WX-32335 type tubes built with the flat target ring structure could not be completed, there was no indication that these tubes could not withstand the sinusoidal vibration requirements established for the IUE camera tube

A recalibration of IUE NEWSIPS low dispersion data

While the low dispersion IUE NEWSIPS data products represent a significant improvement over original IUE SIPS data, they still contain serious systematic effects which compromise their utility for certain applications. We show that NEWSIPS low resolution data are internally consistent to only 10-15% at best, with the majority of the problem due to time dependent systematic effects. In addition, the NEWSIPS flux calibration is shown to be inconsistent by nearly 10%. We examine the origin of these problems and proceed to formulate and apply algorithms to correct them to ~ 3% level -- a factor of 5 improvement in accuracy. Because of the temporal systematics, transforming the corrected data to the IUE flux calibration becomes ambiguous. Therefore, we elect to transform the corrected data onto the HST FOS system. This system is far more self-consistent, and transforming the IUE data to it places data from both telescopes on a single system. Finally, we argue that much of the remaining 3% systematic effects in the corrected data is traceable to problems with the NEWSIPS intensity transformation function (ITF). The accuracy could probably be doubled by rederiving the ITF.Comment: Submitted to ApJ Supplement, 35 pages, 13 figures, LaTeX - AASTEX aas2pp4.st
