    On the Exploitation of Multimodal Remote Sensing Data Combination for Mesoscale/Submesoscale Eddy Detection in the Marginal Ice Zone

    The detection and analysis of ocean eddies via remote sensing have become a hot topic in physical oceanography during the last few decades. However, eddy identification and tracking via remote sensing can be a challenging task, since each sensor has some limitations. In order to overcome potential challenges, it is crucial to exploit the complementary information provided by different sensing systems. As one of the steps toward this aim, we have investigated the pertinence of applying the scheme, including a texture features extraction and a superpixel segmentation method, in order to distinguish eddies in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) using multisensor remote sensing data. Nevertheless, not all the images available from various sensors are of actual importance, since they can be corrupted, redundant, or simply unnecessary for a particular task. Therefore, we are additionally exploring the relevance of different sensors separately and simultaneously as well as with extracted texture features for eddy monitoring

    Human activity recognition using multisensor data fusion based on Reservoir Computing

    Activity recognition plays a key role in providing activity assistance and care for users in smart homes. In this work, we present an activity recognition system that classifies in the near real-time a set of common daily activities exploiting both the data sampled by sensors embedded in a smartphone carried out by the user and the reciprocal Received Signal Strength (RSS) values coming from worn wireless sensor devices and from sensors deployed in the environment. In order to achieve an effective and responsive classification, a decision tree based on multisensor data-stream is applied fusing data coming from embedded sensors on the smartphone and environmental sensors before processing the RSS stream. To this end, we model the RSS stream, obtained from a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), using Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) implemented as efficient Echo State Networks (ESNs), within the Reservoir Computing (RC) paradigm. We targeted the system for the EvAAL scenario, an international competition that aims at establishing benchmarks and evaluation metrics for comparing Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions. In this paper, the performance of the proposed activity recognition system is assessed on a purposely collected real-world dataset, taking also into account a competitive neural network approach for performance comparison. Our results show that, with an appropriate configuration of the information fusion chain, the proposed system reaches a very good accuracy with a low deployment cost

    Analysis of displacement errors in high-resolution image reconstruction with multisensors

    An image-acquisition system composed of an array of sensors, where each sensor has a subarray of sensing elements of suitable size, has recently been popular for increasing the spatial resolution with high signal-to-noise ratio beyond the performance bound of technologies that constrain the manufacture of imaging devices. Small perturbations around the ideal subpixel locations of the sensing elements (responsible for capturing the sequence of undersampled degraded frames), because of imperfections in fabrication, limit the performance of the signal-processing algorithms for processing and integrating the acquired images for the desired enhanced resolution and quality. The contributions of this paper include an analysis of the displacement errors on the convergence rate of the iterative approach for solving the transform based preconditioned system of equations. Subsequently, it is established that the use of the MAP, L2 norm or H1 norm regularization functional leads to a proof of linear convergence of the conjugate gradient method in terms of the displacement errors caused by the imperfect subpixel locations. The gene regulatory network is viewed as a stochastic dynamic model, which consists of the noisy gene measurement from microarray and the gene regulation first-order autoregressive (AR) stochastic dynamic process. By using the EM algorithm, both the model parameters and the actual values of the gene expression levels can be identified simultaneously. Moreover, the algorithm can deal with the sparse parameter identification and the noisy data in an efficient way. It is also shown that the EM algorithm can handle the microarray gene expression data with large number of variables but a small number of observations. The gene expression stochastic dynamic models for four real-world gene expression data sets are constructed to demonstrate the advantages of the introduced algorithm. Several indices are proposed to evaluate the models of inferred gene regulatory networks, and the relevant biological properties are discussed

    Magnetic-Visual Sensor Fusion-based Dense 3D Reconstruction and Localization for Endoscopic Capsule Robots

    Reliable and real-time 3D reconstruction and localization functionality is a crucial prerequisite for the navigation of actively controlled capsule endoscopic robots as an emerging, minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic technology for use in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In this study, we propose a fully dense, non-rigidly deformable, strictly real-time, intraoperative map fusion approach for actively controlled endoscopic capsule robot applications which combines magnetic and vision-based localization, with non-rigid deformations based frame-to-model map fusion. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated using four different ex-vivo porcine stomach models. Across different trajectories of varying speed and complexity, and four different endoscopic cameras, the root mean square surface reconstruction errors 1.58 to 2.17 cm.Comment: submitted to IROS 201
