Iterative Deterministic Equivalents for the Performance Analysis of Communication Systems
In this article, we introduce iterative deterministic equivalents as a novel
technique for the performance analysis of communication systems whose channels
are modeled by complex combinations of independent random matrices. This
technique extends the deterministic equivalent approach for the study of
functionals of large random matrices to a broader class of random matrix models
which naturally arise as channel models in wireless communications. We present
two specific applications: First, we consider a multi-hop amplify-and-forward
(AF) MIMO relay channel with noise at each stage and derive deterministic
approximations of the mutual information after the Kth hop. Second, we study a
MIMO multiple access channel (MAC) where the channel between each transmitter
and the receiver is represented by the double-scattering channel model. We
provide deterministic approximations of the mutual information, the
signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and sum-rate with
minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) detection and derive the asymptotically
optimal precoding matrices. In both scenarios, the approximations can be
computed by simple and provably converging fixed-point algorithms and are shown
to be almost surely tight in the limit when the number of antennas at each node
grows infinitely large. Simulations suggest that the approximations are
accurate for realistic system dimensions. The technique of iterative
deterministic equivalents can be easily extended to other channel models of
interest and is, therefore, also a new contribution to the field of random
matrix theory.Comment: submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 43 pages, 4

Linear Precoding Based on Polynomial Expansion: Large-Scale Multi-Cell MIMO Systems
Large-scale MIMO systems can yield a substantial improvement in spectral
efficiency for future communication systems. Due to the finer spatial
resolution achieved by a huge number of antennas at the base stations, these
systems have shown to be robust to inter-user interference and the use of
linear precoding is asymptotically optimal. However, most precoding schemes
exhibit high computational complexity as the system dimensions increase. For
example, the near-optimal RZF requires the inversion of a large matrix. This
motivated our companion paper, where we proposed to solve the issue in
single-cell multi-user systems by approximating the matrix inverse by a
truncated polynomial expansion (TPE), where the polynomial coefficients are
optimized to maximize the system performance. We have shown that the proposed
TPE precoding with a small number of coefficients reaches almost the
performance of RZF but never exceeds it. In a realistic multi-cell scenario
involving large-scale multi-user MIMO systems, the optimization of RZF
precoding has thus far not been feasible. This is mainly attributed to the high
complexity of the scenario and the non-linear impact of the necessary
regularizing parameters. On the other hand, the scalar weights in TPE precoding
give hope for possible throughput optimization. Following the same methodology
as in the companion paper, we exploit random matrix theory to derive a
deterministic expression for the asymptotic SINR for each user. We also provide
an optimization algorithm to approximate the weights that maximize the
network-wide weighted max-min fairness. The optimization weights can be used to
mimic the user throughput distribution of RZF precoding. Using simulations, we
compare the network throughput of the TPE precoding with that of the suboptimal
RZF scheme and show that our scheme can achieve higher throughput using a TPE
order of only 3
Joint Beamforming and Power Control in Coordinated Multicell: Max-Min Duality, Effective Network and Large System Transition
This paper studies joint beamforming and power control in a coordinated
multicell downlink system that serves multiple users per cell to maximize the
minimum weighted signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. The optimal solution
and distributed algorithm with geometrically fast convergence rate are derived
by employing the nonlinear Perron-Frobenius theory and the multicell network
duality. The iterative algorithm, though operating in a distributed manner,
still requires instantaneous power update within the coordinated cluster
through the backhaul. The backhaul information exchange and message passing may
become prohibitive with increasing number of transmit antennas and increasing
number of users. In order to derive asymptotically optimal solution, random
matrix theory is leveraged to design a distributed algorithm that only requires
statistical information. The advantage of our approach is that there is no
instantaneous power update through backhaul. Moreover, by using nonlinear
Perron-Frobenius theory and random matrix theory, an effective primal network
and an effective dual network are proposed to characterize and interpret the
asymptotic solution.Comment: Some typos in the version publised in the IEEE Transactions on

A Deterministic Equivalent for the Analysis of Non-Gaussian Correlated MIMO Multiple Access Channels
Large dimensional random matrix theory (RMT) has provided an efficient
analytical tool to understand multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels
and to aid the design of MIMO wireless communication systems. However, previous
studies based on large dimensional RMT rely on the assumption that the transmit
correlation matrix is diagonal or the propagation channel matrix is Gaussian.
There is an increasing interest in the channels where the transmit correlation
matrices are generally nonnegative definite and the channel entries are
non-Gaussian. This class of channel models appears in several applications in
MIMO multiple access systems, such as small cell networks (SCNs). To address
these problems, we use the generalized Lindeberg principle to show that the
Stieltjes transforms of this class of random matrices with Gaussian or
non-Gaussian independent entries coincide in the large dimensional regime. This
result permits to derive the deterministic equivalents (e.g., the Stieltjes
transform and the ergodic mutual information) for non-Gaussian MIMO channels
from the known results developed for Gaussian MIMO channels, and is of great
importance in characterizing the spectral efficiency of SCNs.Comment: This paper is the revision of the original manuscript titled "A
Deterministic Equivalent for the Analysis of Small Cell Networks". We have

Optimal Linear Precoding in Multi-User MIMO Systems: A Large System Analysis
We consider the downlink of a single-cell multi-user MIMO system in which the
base station makes use of antennas to communicate with single-antenna
user equipments (UEs) randomly positioned in the coverage area. In particular,
we focus on the problem of designing the optimal linear precoding for
minimizing the total power consumption while satisfying a set of target
signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs). To gain insights into the
structure of the optimal solution and reduce the computational complexity for
its evaluation, we analyze the asymptotic regime where and grow large
with a given ratio and make use of recent results from large system analysis to
compute the asymptotic solution. Then, we concentrate on the asymptotically
design of heuristic linear precoding techniques. Interestingly, it turns out
that the regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoder is equivalent to the optimal
one when the ratio between the SINR requirement and the average channel
attenuation is the same for all UEs. If this condition does not hold true but
only the same SINR constraint is imposed for all UEs, then the RZF can be
modified to still achieve optimality if statistical information of the UE
positions is available at the BS. Numerical results are used to evaluate the
performance gap in the finite system regime and to make comparisons among the
precoding techniques.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM),
