Violence against children continues to increase and needs the appropriate prevention for families who are vulnerable to get violence. This service research applied the treatment of the educational model in the form of Sikola Amma Bapa to the parents or caregivers to get positive parenting competencies. This research was conducted in Gowa Regency for six months, from March to August 2020, where 15 samples were selected with purposive sampling techniques. The data collection instrument used was a parenting competency scale, adapted from the Mindfulness in Parenting Questionnaire (MIPQ) by McCaffrey and was added by some specific parenting competency items based on the Sikola Amma Bapa module. Pre- and post-test data were evaluated using inferential analysis of paired sample t-tests. The results showed that the application of Sikola Amma Bapa became effective. The model can increase the competence of care for Islamic activists in assisting vulnerable families who get violent in the Gowa regency as proven by p = 0.000 (p 0.001). The data showed a very significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test; the average after-treatment (post-test value) is 143.6667, which is higher than the treatment (pre-test value) of 107.0067. Media and the War on Terror: a Case Study of Islamic News Magazine Reporting in the Transition Indonesia

This research looks at the representation of recent terrorist attacks in Indonesian Islamic news media within a context of cultural and social transition. It is based on an understanding that modern terrorism is formed in relation to the media and global networked media systems. Terrorism can be considered to be a stage upon which political ‘drama' is performed for specific audiences, (national or International publics, particular groups or individuals, or political elites). In this context, the news media play a crucial role in distributing the message to the audience. At the same time, the way the news media represent the issue is influenced by the cultural, political, economic and social conditions in which the political violence is being played out

Salafi Islamic piety as civic activism: Wahdah Islamiyah and differentiated citizenship in Indonesia

Islamic renewal is having a considerable impact on politics and society in Indonesia. This article discusses the way in which Islamic movements shape the nature and interpretation of citizenship by focusing on Wahdah Islamiyah, a Salafi organisation with over 120 branches nationwide. By examining how Wahdah Islamiyah promotes an idea of citizenship amongst followers and the community, it seeks to show how Islamic and national identities can overlap. Wahdah Islamiyah does not see Indonesian nationalism as anathema to adherence to strict Islamic faith; instead they have been actively synthesising Islamic identity with national pride, often using the ‘secular’ terminology of state, citizenship and security to do so. Yet, Wahdah Islamiyah’s interpretation of citizenship differentiates between Muslim and non-Muslim Indonesians. They inevitably aim to foreground the position of Sunni Muslims by calling on the state and civil society to regulate public spaces to free them from non-Muslim elements

The Rupture of Young Muslim Intelligentsia in the Modernization of Indonesia

In March 1966, Army Chief of Staff Soeharto rose to power, taking control of the Indonesian Government. Soeharto's 'New Order' regime inherited a plethora of economic, political and social problems. The New Order came to the conclusion that these crises had evolved as a result of the previous regime's neglect of the economy and lack of concern for social welfare. Economic recovery was viewed as a priority by the new regime for it would tum the attention of the people from politics to the economy thus changing the national outlook from 'politik-sebagai-panglinta'(politics as commander) - as practiced during the Old Order - to 'ekonomi-sebagai-panglima' (economy as commander).DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v12i3.58

The distinction between normative and objective knowledge and how social scientist imagine that their research is solely built on objectivity is currently being challenged especially in the political science field. If we take culture as an example and more specifically the question of identity and identity politics in the Middle East, we will find that the current modus operandi in political science research is distancing itself from objective knowledge because of the increased focus in the field on quantification. Whether one analyzes the work of Telhami on Identity in the Middle East, or Lynch’s “The Arab Uprisings Explained”, one will find that they all reflect on the academic conundrum that the field is facing.

Active Resistors: The Women of Post-Revolution Iran

In this paper, I challenge the notion that Muslim or Middle Eastern women are passive acceptors of discrimination. After examining how Iranian women resisted governmental discrimination following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, I consider a number of factors that may have led to the reversal of some of these discriminatory policies in the 1990’s. How much of an effect did women’s demands for equality have on the government’s decisions? This question of effectiveness introduces a longtime debate between Islamic feminists, who advocate for working with the theocratic government and using Islam to frame their demands for equality, and secular feminists, who advocate for using legal and political systems to reach a similar goal. Following a critical evaluation of each approach, the question evolves into whether a radical or a resonant frame is more effective. After taking into account the masculinity and power complexes of government leaders, I suggest that a resonant approach is in a unique position to successfully manipulate the government, which could lead to the reversal of discriminatory policies. However, the women’s rights movement will be most powerful if the two sides put aside their differences and unite in the fight against discrimination
