Convergence of packet communications over the evolved mobile networks; signal processing and protocol performance

    Get PDF
In this thesis, the convergence of packet communications over the evolved mobile networks is studied. The Long Term Evolution (LTE) process is dominating the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in order to bring technologies to the markets in the spirit of continuous innovation. The global markets of mobile information services are growing towards the Mobile Information Society. The thesis begins with the principles and theories of the multiple-access transmission schemes, transmitter receiver techniques and signal processing algorithms. Next, packet communications and Internet protocols are referred from the IETF standards with the characteristics of mobile communications in the focus. The mobile network architecture and protocols bind together the evolved packet system of Internet communications to the radio access network technologies. Specifics of the traffic models are shortly visited for their statistical meaning in the radio performance analysis. Radio resource management algorithms and protocols, also procedures, are covered addressing their relevance for the system performance. Throughout these Chapters, the commonalities and differentiators of the WCDMA, WCDMA/HSPA and LTE are covered. The main outcome of the thesis is the performance analysis of the LTE technology beginning from the early discoveries to the analysis of various system features and finally converging to an extensive system analysis campaign. The system performance is analysed with the characteristics of voice over the Internet and best effort traffic of the Internet. These traffic classes represent the majority of the mobile traffic in the converged packet networks, and yet they are simple enough for a fair and generic analysis of technologies. The thesis consists of publications and inventions created by the author that proposed several improvements to the 3G technologies towards the LTE. In the system analysis, the LTE showed by the factor of at least 2.5 to 3 times higher system measures compared to the WCDMA/HSPA reference. The WCDMA/HSPA networks are currently available with over 400 million subscribers and showing increasing growth, in the meanwhile the first LTE roll-outs are scheduled to begin in 2010. Sophisticated 3G LTE mobile devices are expected to appear fluently for all consumer segments in the following years

Government Control of Urban Land Use: A Comparative Major Program Analysis

    Get PDF
Among the most troublesome urban problems facing American society are those that are closely tied to how land is used, including how land should be developed and how land use resources should be allocated. Most of our population lives and works in metropolitan areas and is intimately affected by how these urban land use related problems are dealt with. Satisfactory progress in solving or at least substantially alleviating these problems may be necessary if this country is to avoid increasing the polarity between rich and poor and between privileged and disadvantaged that can have such long-term adverse national consequences. Among the many current land use related urban problems are housing quality and affordability, especially for the poor; neighborhood security from crime and violence; the extent and impact of racial, ethnic and class segregation in urban communities; pollution and other threats to the natural environment; the amount and burden of taxes and other charges on real estate, including property taxes and utility costs; and channeling urban growth and revitalization efforts. Concerns over these and other land use related problems are accentuated by uncertainties as to the future. That American urban areas will change over time is assured. Whether that change will be for better or worse is difficult to predict, but current trends justify pessimism about many areas

The drivers of Corporate Social Responsibility in the supply chain. A case study.

    Get PDF
Purpose: The paper studies the way in which a SME integrates CSR into its corporate strategy, the practices it puts in place and how its CSR strategies reflect on its suppliers and customers relations. Methodology/Research limitations: A qualitative case study methodology is used. The use of a single case study limits the generalizing capacity of these findings. Findings: The entrepreneur’s ethical beliefs and value system play a fundamental role in shaping sustainable corporate strategy. Furthermore, the type of competitive strategy selected based on innovation, quality and responsibility clearly emerges both in terms of well defined management procedures and supply chain relations as a whole aimed at involving partners in the process of sustainable innovation. Originality/value: The paper presents a SME that has devised an original innovative business model. The study pivots on the issues of innovation and eco-sustainability in a context of drivers for CRS and business ethics. These values are considered fundamental at International level; the United Nations has declared 2011 the “International Year of Forestry”

Dynamics of Japan’s Trade and Industrial Policy in the Post Rapid Growth Era (1980–2000)

    Get PDF
This open access book provides an in-depth examination of Japan's policy responses to the economic challenges of the 1980s and '90s. While MITI's earlier role in promoting rapid growth has been addressed in other studies, this volume, based on official records and exhaustive interviews, is the first to examine the aftermath of rapid growth and the evolution of MITI's interpretation of the economy's changing needs. Covering such topics as the oil shocks, trade conflict with the United States, and the rise and collapse of the so-called bubble economy, it presents a detailed analysis and evaluation of how these challenges were interpreted by government officials, the kinds of policies that were enacted, the extent to which policy aims were realized, and lessons for the longer term. This book is recommended especially to officials of countries concerned about the challenges that follow on high economic growth and to readers interested in Japan’s contemporary economic history

Characterization, Avoidance and Repair of Packet Collisions in Inter-Vehicle Communication Networks

This work proposes a combined and accurate simulation of wireless channel, physical layer and networking aspects in order to bridge the gaps between the corresponding research communities. The resulting high fidelity simulations enable performance optimizations across multiple layers, and are used in the second part of this thesis to evaluate the impact of fast-fading channel characteristics on Carrier-Sense Multiple Access, and to quantify the benefit of successive interference cancellation

Our purpose today, is to examine some of the problems confronted by women in employment. We will examine the areas of recruitment, hiring, mobility, the grievance procedures, and the emerging issue of collective bargaining. The committees are also very interested in examining the issue of ethnic women, and the progress they have made in equalizing their representation in the labor force

Title of Dissertation: Supporting Distributed Multimedia Applications on ATM Networks

    Get PDF
ATM offers a number of features, such as high-bandwidth, and provision for per-connection quality of service guarantees, making it particularly attractive to multimedia applications. Unfortunately, the bandwidth available at ATM's data-link layer is not visible to the applications due to operating system (OS) bottlenecks at the host-network interface. Similarly, the promise of per-connection service guarantees is still elusive due to the lack of appropriate traffic control mechanisms. In this dissertation, we investigate both of these problems, taking multimedia applications as examples. The OS bottlenecks are not limited to the network interfaces, but affect the performance of the entire I/O subsystem. We propose to alleviate OS's I/O bottleneck by according more autonomy to I/O devices and by using a connection oriented framework for I/O transfers. We present experimental results on a video conferencing testbed demonstrating the tremendous performance impact of the proposed I/O architecture on networked multimedia applications. To address the problem of quality of service support in ATM networks, we propose a simple cell scheduling mechanism, named carry-over round robin (CORR). Using analytical techniques, we analyze the delay performance of CORR scheduling. Besides providing guarantees on delay, CORR is also fair in distributing the excess bandwidth. We show that albeit its simplicity, CORR is very competitive with other more complex schemes both in terms of delay performance and fairness. (Also cross-referenced as UMIACS-TR-95-88

Globalization and Labour in the Twenty-First Century

    Get PDF
Globalisation has adversely affected working-class organisation and mobilisation; but international labour movement demobilisation is not necessarily an irreversible trend. Globalisation has prompted workers and their organisations to find new ways to mobilise. This book examines international labour movement opposition to globalisation. It chronicles and critically scrutinizes the emergence of distinctively new forms of labour movement organisation and mobilisation that constitute creative initiatives on the part of labour, which present capitalism with fresh challenges. The author identifies eight characteristics of globalisation that have proven problematic to workers and their organisations and describes and analyses how they have responded to these challenges since 1990 and especially in the past decade. In particular, it focuses attention on new types of labour movement organisation and mobilisation that are not simply defensive reactions but are offensive and innovative responses that compel corporations to behave more responsively and responsibly towards employees and society at large. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of globalisation, political economy, labour politics, economics, Marxism and sociology of work
