    Wearable Sensors and Smart Devices to Monitor Rehabilitation Parameters and Sports Performance: An Overview

    A quantitative evaluation of kinetic parameters, the joint’s range of motion, heart rate, and breathing rate, can be employed in sports performance tracking and rehabilitation monitoring following injuries or surgical operations. However, many of the current detection systems are expensive and designed for clinical use, requiring the presence of a physician and medical staff to assist users in the device’s positioning and measurements. The goal of wearable sensors is to overcome the limitations of current devices, enabling the acquisition of a user’s vital signs directly from the body in an accurate and non–invasive way. In sports activities, wearable sensors allow athletes to monitor performance and body movements objectively, going beyond the coach’s subjective evaluation limits. The main goal of this review paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of wearable technologies and sensing systems to detect and monitor the physiological parameters of patients during post–operative rehabilitation and athletes’ training, and to present evidence that supports the efficacy of this technology for healthcare applications. First, a classification of the human physiological parameters acquired from the human body by sensors attached to sensitive skin locations or worn as a part of garments is introduced, carrying important feedback on the user’s health status. Then, a detailed description of the electromechanical transduction mechanisms allows a comparison of the technologies used in wearable applications to monitor sports and rehabilitation activities. This paves the way for an analysis of wearable technologies, providing a comprehensive comparison of the current state of the art of available sensors and systems. Comparative and statistical analyses are provided to point out useful insights for defining the best technologies and solutions for monitoring body movements. Lastly, the presented review is compared with similar ones reported in the literature to highlight its strengths and novelties

    Innovative Technologies and Services for Smart Cities

    A smart city is a modern technology-driven urban area which uses sensing devices, information, and communication technology connected to the internet of things (IoTs) for the optimum and efficient utilization of infrastructures and services with the goal of improving the living conditions of citizens. Increasing populations, lower budgets, limited resources, and compatibility of the upgraded technologies are some of the few problems affecting the implementation of smart cities. Hence, there is continuous advancement regarding technologies for the implementation of smart cities. The aim of this Special Issue is to report on the design and development of integrated/smart sensors, a universal interfacing platform, along with the IoT framework, extending it to next-generation communication networks for monitoring parameters of interest with the goal of achieving smart cities. The proposed universal interfacing platform with the IoT framework will solve many challenging issues and significantly boost the growth of IoT-related applications, not just in the environmental monitoring domain but in the other key areas, such as smart home, assistive technology for the elderly care, smart city with smart waste management, smart E-metering, smart water supply, intelligent traffic control, smart grid, remote healthcare applications, etc., signifying benefits for all countries

    Engineering of hybrid materials for self-powered flexible sensors

    Department of Energy Engineering (Energy Engineering)Along with the 4th industrial revolution, the great advance in wearable electronics has led a new paradigm in our life. Especially, wearable sensor technology has received great attention as promising candidates to improve the quality of life by realizing the ???Internet of Things??? which can be utilized in daily healthcare, intelligent control, daily activity monitoring, and human-machine interface systems. The ideal wearable devices require several characteristics providing light weight, flexible, unobtrusive, autonomously powered for the convenience of user and sustainable uses. Although various emerging technologies have been suggested to meet these requirements, there are still challenges for highly flexible and unobtrusive forms, multifunctionality, and sustainable uses, which are directly related to widespread practical applications. In response to these requirements, several approaches to explore functional materials and to design the effective structures for advanced sensor performances with sustainable uses, high sensitivity, and multifunctionality. For sustainable uses, self-powered sensing system can be developed by triboelectric/piezoelectric/pyroelectric effect, which can rule out any problems with power sources. For wearable and flexible form factors, textile and extremely thin films, which are mountable and attachable on the human body, are used instead of conventional obtrusive devices, improving the wearing sensing of devices. Moreover, the selection of multifunctional materials and modification of material characteristics can realize multifunctionality which can respond to different stimuli (pressure and temperature) simultaneously. Furthermore, soft/hard and organic/inorganic hybrid materials can be used for effective design of high performance wearable sensor by distribution control in dissimilar materials, which is attributed to effectively localized strain and large contrast of dielectric properties. Therefore, self-powered wearable sensors can be developed with functional materials, unique design and novel approach for characteristic modification, which can provide a promising platform to realize ideal wearable sensors for future applications such as daily healthcare, intelligent control, daily activity monitoring, and human-machine interface systems. In this thesis, we suggest the strategy for advanced sustainable wearable sensors with better wearing sensation, multimodality, and enhanced sensory functions through structure design and modification of material characteristics. Firstly, we briefly summarize the fundamental working principles, the latest research trends, and potential applications in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, we demonstrate as-spun P(VDF) fiber-based self-powered textile sensors with high sensitivity, mechanical stability, and washing durability. In Chapter 3, we introduce multimodal wearable sensors without signal interference based on triboelectric and pyroelectric effect, which is attributed to controllable polarity of P(VDF-TrFE) via ferroelectric polarization. In Chapter 4, we suggest a novel method for high performance of triboelectric sensors based on alternating P(VDF-TrFE)/BaTiO3 multilayer nanocomposites, which is attributed to the efficient stress concentration and large contrast of dielectric properties.     Studies on Spinal Fusion from Computational Modelling to ‘Smart’ Implants

    Low back pain, the worldwide leading cause of disability, is commonly treated with lumbar interbody fusion surgery to address degeneration, instability, deformity, and trauma of the spine. Following fusion surgery, nearly 20% experience complications requiring reoperation while 1 in 3 do not experience a meaningful improvement in pain. Implant subsidence and pseudarthrosis in particular present a multifaceted challenge in the management of a patient’s painful symptoms. Given the diversity of fusion approaches, materials, and instrumentation, further inputs are required across the treatment spectrum to prevent and manage complications. This thesis comprises biomechanical studies on lumbar spinal fusion that provide new insights into spinal fusion surgery from preoperative planning to postoperative monitoring. A computational model, using the finite element method, is developed to quantify the biomechanical impact of temporal ossification on the spine, examining how the fusion mass stiffness affects loads on the implant and subsequent subsidence risk, while bony growth into the endplates affects load-distribution among the surrounding spinal structures. The computational modelling approach is extended to provide biomechanical inputs to surgical decisions regarding posterior fixation. Where a patient is not clinically pre-disposed to subsidence or pseudarthrosis, the results suggest unilateral fixation is a more economical choice than bilateral fixation to stabilise the joint. While finite element modelling can inform pre-surgical planning, effective postoperative monitoring currently remains a clinical challenge. Periodic radiological follow-up to assess bony fusion is subjective and unreliable. This thesis describes the development of a ‘smart’ interbody cage capable of taking direct measurements from the implant for monitoring fusion progression and complication risk. Biomechanical testing of the ‘smart’ implant demonstrated its ability to distinguish between graft and endplate stiffness states. The device is prepared for wireless actualisation by investigating sensor optimisation and telemetry. The results show that near-field communication is a feasible approach for wireless power and data transfer in this setting, notwithstanding further architectural optimisation required, while a combination of strain and pressure sensors will be more mechanically and clinically informative. Further work in computational modelling of the spine and ‘smart’ implants will enable personalised healthcare for low back pain, and the results presented in this thesis are a step in this direction

    Inverse Piezoresistive Nanocomposite Sensors for Identifying Human Sitting Posture

    Sitting posture is the position in which one holds his/her body upright against gravity while sitting. Poor sitting posture is regarded as an aggravating factor for various diseases. In this paper, we present an inverse piezoresistive nanocomposite sensor, and related deciphering neural network, as a new tool to identify human sitting postures accurately. As a low power consumption device, the proposed tool has simple structure, and is easy to use. The strain gauge is attached to the back of the user to acquire sitting data. A three-layer BP neural network is employed to distinguish normal sitting posture, slight hunchback and severe hunchback according to the acquired data. Experimental results show that our method is both realizable and effective, achieving 98.75% posture identification accuracy. This successful application of inverse piezoresistive nanocomposite sensors reveals that the method could potentially be used for monitoring of diverse physiological parameters in the future
