    EVALUATION OF DIGITAL LIBRARIES TO IMPROVE AGILE LIBRARY SERVICES

    This research aims to analyze digital library optimization to support the development of agile libraries.The development of agile libraries through the optimization of digital libraries is seen from the perception of convenience, perceived benefits, and acceptance of digital libraries by the user community.This research uses a qualitative approach. Data collection is done by purposive sampling technique.Triangulation is used to analyze data. The results show that the optimization of digital libraries for the development of agile library services is measured by ease of use in terms of systems that are easy to learn, easy to master, clear and easy to reach, flexible, and easy to use.Furthermore, flexible factors are the only aspect that needs to be improved. To improve agile library services through the optimization of digital libraries in terms of perceived benefits in terms of ease of information search, useful in finding information, increasing effectiveness, increasing productivity, and developing work performance.Then from the perception of usefulness as a whole is quite good because the existence of this digital library provides positive value for the development of agile library services

    CiteSee: Augmenting Citations in Scientific Papers with Persistent and Personalized Historical Context

    When reading a scholarly article, inline citations help researchers contextualize the current article and discover relevant prior work. However, it can be challenging to prioritize and make sense of the hundreds of citations encountered during literature reviews. This paper introduces CiteSee, a paper reading tool that leverages a user's publishing, reading, and saving activities to provide personalized visual augmentations and context around citations. First, CiteSee connects the current paper to familiar contexts by surfacing known citations a user had cited or opened. Second, CiteSee helps users prioritize their exploration by highlighting relevant but unknown citations based on saving and reading history. We conducted a lab study that suggests CiteSee is significantly more effective for paper discovery than three baselines. A field deployment study shows CiteSee helps participants keep track of their explorations and leads to better situational awareness and increased paper discovery via inline citation when conducting real-world literature reviews

    Shared Annotations: Attitudes and Behaviors of Scholars

    Annotations, in the form of markings and comments on the text, are often part of scholarly work. Digital platforms increasingly allow these annotations to be shared in group and public environments. To explore scholars' current behavior and attitudes toward shared annotations, semi-structured interviews with 11 doctoral students in the life sciences were conducted. The findings suggest that socio-cognitive processes are integral to scholars' creation and use of shared annotations. This paper discusses common themes from the findings and their implications for effective design of annotation systems supporting scholarly communication

    Introducing a Digital Library Reading Appliance Into a Reading Group

    How will we read digital library materials? This paper describes the reading practices of an on-going reading group, and how these practices changed when we introduced XLibris, a digital library reading appliance that uses a pen tablet computer to provide a paper-like interface. We interviewed group members about their reading practices, observed their meetings, and analyzed their annotations, both when they read a paper document and when they read using XLibris. We use these data to characterize their analytic reading, reference use, and annotation practices. We also describe the use of the Reader's Notebook, a list of clippings that XLibris computes from a reader's annotations. Implications for digital libraries stem from our findings on reading and mobility, the complexity of analytic reading, the social nature of reference following, and the unselfconscious nature of readers' annotations.     Integrating information seeking and information structuring: spatial hypertext as an interface to the digital library.

    Information seeking is the task of finding documents that satisfy the information needs of a person or organisation. Digital Libraries are one means of providing documents to meet the information needs of their users - i.e. as a resource to support information seeking. Therefore, research into the activity of information seeking is key to the development and understanding of digital libraries. Information structuring is the activity of organising documents found in the process of information seeking. Information structuring can be seen as either part of information seeking, or as a sepárate, complementary activity. It is a task performed by the seeker themselves and targeted by them to support their understanding and the management of later seeking activity. Though information structuring is an important task, it receives sparse support in current digital library Systems. Spatial hypertexts are computer software Systems that have been specifically been developed to support information structuring. However, they seldom are connected to Systems that support information seeking. Thus to day, the two inter-related activities of information seeking and information structuring have been supported by disjoint computer Systems. However, a variety of research strongly indicates that in physical environments, information seeking and information structuring are closely inter-related activities. Given this connection, this thesis explores whether a similar relationship can be found in electronic information seeking environments. However, given the absence of a software system that supports both activities well, there is an immédiate practical problem. In this thesis, I introduce an integrated information seeking and structuring System, called Garnet, that provides a spatial hypertext interface that also supports information seeking in a digital library. The opportunity of supporting information seeking by the artefacts of information structuring is explored in the Garnet system, drawing on the benefits previously found in supporting one information seeking activity with the artefacts of another. Garnet and its use are studied in a qualitative user study that results in the comparison of user behaviour in a combined electronic environment with previous studies in physical environments. The response of participants to using Garnet is reported, particularly regarding their perceptions of the combined system and the quality of the interaction. Finally, the potential value of the artefacts of information structuring to support information seeking is also evaluated

    Supporting Scholarly Research Ideation through Web Semantics

    We develop new methods and technologies for supporting scholarly research ideation, the tasks in which researchers develop new ideas for their work, through web semantics, computational representations of information found on the web, capturing meaning involving people’s experiences of things of interest. To do so, we first conducted a qualitative study with established researchers on their practices, using sensitizing concepts from information science, creative cognition, and art as a basis for framing and deriving findings. We found that participants engage in and combine a wide range of activities, including citation chaining, exploratory browsing, and curation, to achieve their goals of creative ideation. We derived a new, interdisciplinary model to depict their practices. Our study and findings address a gap in existing research: the creative nature of what researchers do has been insufficiently investigated. The model is expected to guide future investigations. We then use in-context presentations of dynamically extracted semantic information to (1) address the issues of digression and disorientation, which arise in citation chaining and exploratory browsing, and (2) provide contextual information in researchers’ prior work curation. The implemented interface, Metadata In-Context Explorer (MICE), maintains context while allowing new information to be brought into and integrated with the current context, reducing the needs for switching between documents and webpages. Study shows that MICE supports participants in their citation chaining processes, thus supports scholarly research ideation. MICE is implemented with BigSemantics, a metadata type system and runtime integrating data models, extraction rules, and presentation hints into types. BigSemantics operationalizes type-specific, dynamic extraction and rich presentation of semantic information (a.k.a. metadata) found on the web. The metadata type system, runtime, and MICE are expected to help build interfaces supporting dynamic exploratory search, browsing, and other creative tasks involving complex and interlinked semantics
