Deer Herd Management Using the Internet: A Comparative Study of California Targeted By Data Mining the Internet

    Get PDF
An ongoing project to investigate the use of the internet as an information source for decision support identified the decline of the California deer population as a significant issue. Using Google Alerts, an automated keyword search tool, text and numerical data were collected from a daily internet search and categorized by region and topic to allow for identification of information trends. This simple data mining approach determined that California is one of only four states that do not currently report total, finalized deer harvest (kill) data online and that it is the only state that has reduced the amount of information made available over the internet in recent years. Contradictory information identified by the internet data mining prompted the analysis described in this paper indicating that the graphical information presented on the California Fish and Wildlife website significantly understates the severity of the deer population decline over the past 50 years. This paper presents a survey of how states use the internet in their deer management programs and an estimate of the California deer population over the last 100 years. It demonstrates how any organization can use the internet for data collection and discovery

    Internet Fish

I have invented "Internet Fish," a novel class of resource-discovery tools designed to help users extract useful information from the Internet. Internet Fish (IFish) are semi-autonomous, persistent information brokers; users deploy individual IFish to gather and refine information related to a particular topic. An IFish will initiate research, continue to discover new sources of information, and keep tabs on new developments in that topic. As part of the information-gathering process the user interacts with his IFish to find out what it has learned, answer questions it has posed, and make suggestions for guidance. Internet Fish differ from other Internet resource discovery systems in that they are persistent, personal and dynamic. As part of the information-gathering process IFish conduct extended, long-term conversations with users as they explore. They incorporate deep structural knowledge of the organization and services of the net, and are also capable of on-the-fly reconfiguration, modification and expansion. Human users may dynamically change the IFish in response to changes in the environment, or IFish may initiate such changes itself. IFish maintain internal state, including models of its own structure, behavior, information environment and its user; these models permit an IFish to perform meta-level reasoning about its own structure. To facilitate rapid assembly of particular IFish I have created the Internet Fish Construction Kit. This system provides enabling technology for the entire class of Internet Fish tools; it facilitates both creation of new IFish as well as additions of new capabilities to existing ones. The Construction Kit includes a collection of encapsulated heuristic knowledge modules that may be combined in mix-and-match fashion to create a particular IFish; interfaces to new services written with the Construction Kit may be immediately added to "live" IFish. Using the Construction Kit I have created a demonstration IFish specialized for finding World-Wide Web documents related to a given group of documents. This "Finder" IFish includes heuristics that describe how to interact with the Web in general, explain how to take advantage of various public indexes and classification schemes, and provide a method for discovering similarity relationships among documents

The New Organics Logo for Europe

Europe has a new organics logo from 1 July 2010. The new logo is mandated for all organic produce of Europe. The new logo is the product of a Europe-wide competition which attracted 3,422 entries, of which three were shortlisted and subjected to an internet vote. The new logo is text-free. It does not replace the plethora of certifier-specific logos currently used by Europe's certifiers, instead, it will appear in conjunction with certifier logos. When presented with this logo, half of respondents recognised the new logo as a leaf; others reported that it looked like a shooting star (17%), a fish (10%), stars (7%), other (7%), and 'don't know (10%)

The Importance of Open Access in Technology Transfer for Marine Ornamental Aquaculture: the Case of Hobbyist-led Breeding Initiative

    Get PDF
Access to peer-reviewed literature is often restricted to a limited segment of the target audience. Barriers are in place to prevent open access information. Here, I present a case study of how the internet and hobbyists are transforming both access and flow of information from closed circles to open dialogue within the field of marine ornamental fish rearing. This open approach is leading to innovation a rate remarkably faster and at a lower costs than could have been accomplished by traditional methods. Aquaculture societies, aquarium professionals, hobbyists, and scientists pursuing the captive production of species should embrace this movement. Whether production is for profit, conservation, or pure enjoyment, the free flow of information provides exciting new opportunities

Indonesia is a country known for its aquaculture. Regular feeding is influential in a good farming management system to obtain quality fish. However, the feeding system is still oriented to human resources that are still manual, resulting in an erratic feeding schedule and size, making it different for each feeding. Feeding planning must be precise so that fish growth is fast. In this research, an automatic fish feeder called "smart fish feeder" was made. This tool uses a microcontroller-based control system that is connected to the internet and an android application. In the control system circuit using the Arduino Uno connected to the ESP32 to be connected to the internet, there are also several actuator and sensor components. The control system gets input to adjust the smart fish feeder device through a smartphone with the smart fish feeder application installed. Based on the results of the tests carried out, for the ultrasonic sensor, the average error value is 6, the error percentage is 0.896%, and the accuracy is 99.104% with a measurement distance of 5-25cm. The loadcell sensor obtained an average error value of 2.8, a percentage error of 0.067%, and an accuracy of 99.933%.Indonesia merupakan negara yang dikenal dengan budidaya perikanannya.

Training them to catch fish? Farmer education and training programmes in Uganda’s organic agricultural subsector

This policy brief explores the nature of training and education activities of civil society organisations and tertiary institutions in Uganda. An internet search of the training and education activities in organic agriculture in Uganda shows overwhelming indications of the hard work that is being put into educating and training Ugandans. Critical questions therefore arise: ‘What is driving these training and education programmes?’ ‘Who is running these programmes and what are their focus areas?’ and, ‘Qualitatively speaking, how effective are these programmes?’ Using the analogy of ‘train them to catch fish’, the policy brief grapples with answering these complex questions. Recommendations are made to both civil society and the Ugandan government on strategies to carry forward the process of growing the sector
