Attacks on the Android Platform

The focus of this research revolves around Android platform security, specifically Android malware attacks and defensive techniques. Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google, based on the Linux kernel and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. With the rise of device mobility in our data-driven world, Android constitutes most of the operating systems on these mobile devices playing a dominant role in today’s world. Hence, this paper analyzes attacks and the various defensive mechanisms that have been proposed to prevent those attacks

"Bitches Ain't Gonna Hunt No Ghosts": Totemic Nostalgia, Toxic Fandom and the Ghostbusters Platonic

In March 2016, the trailer for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot debuted online and suffered the unfortunate accolade of being the most disliked trailer in YouTube history. Popular news media, including professional, pro-am, and amateur commentators, picked up on the resulting online kerfuffle as clear indication that there is something rotten in the state of fandom. Feig himself frequently turned to the echo chamber of social media to denounce fans as “some of the biggest arseholes I’ve ever met in my life”. Addressing fans that singled out the reboot as “ruining my childhood,” Feig poured fuel on the fire by criticising such a perspective as merely the product of “some whacked-out teenager,” overdramatic, pathological and, perhaps more pointedly, “toxic”. In so doing, Feig—and, by extension, the cast of the Ghostbusters reboot—replicated and re-activated traditional stereotypes of the fanboy—living in his mother’s basement and obsessing over trivial entertainment

Interactive Whiteboard Transition: A Case Study

This case study examined the process teachers use when incorporating interactive whiteboards in the classroom and daily curriculum. Participants were drawn from a small group of three elementary and three high school teachers who received an interactive whiteboard, but no formal training. The school system purchased over 300 interactive whiteboards and was not able to adequately train all of the teachers before the beginning of the school year. Findings were compared to relevant models of andragogy, TPACK, and CBAM. The results indicate that a teacher’s prior technological ability aids in the implementation of new technologies in the classroom. The findings also indicate the importance of peer-support and proximity when dealing with technical difficulties. There is an apparent need for a technology-specific adoption model that utilizes the technical experience teachers bring with them when they enter the classroom. The researcher introduces a working model for this process

Tectonic Shift evolved from my desire to examine the role that science has played in my life: as a student, a Jewish American, a friend, a daughter, a writer. My personal search for an understanding of the world around me is what ties together the pieces in Tectonic Shift. In these pages I explore everything from my views on creative nonfiction to my burgeoning fossil collection, all in the context of my larger quest to understand myself and my place in the world. The question I set out to answer in the following pages—how have my ADHD diagnosis and my subsequent love affair with science helped to shape the young woman I have become?—is one that has framed much of my thinking in the years since I completed my undergraduate degree. Before my diagnosis, I did not consider my mind a refuge I could escape into to save myself from the chaos of the world around me. But after my diagnosis I discovered salvation in science
