Developing serious games for cultural heritage: a state-of-the-art review
Although the widespread use of gaming for leisure purposes has been well documented, the use of games to support cultural heritage purposes, such as historical teaching and learning, or for enhancing museum visits, has been less well considered. The state-of-the-art in serious game technology is identical to that of the state-of-the-art in entertainment games technology. As a result, the field of serious heritage games concerns itself with recent advances in computer games, real-time computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence. On the other hand, the main strengths of serious gaming applications may be generalised as being in the areas of communication, visual expression of information, collaboration mechanisms, interactivity and entertainment. In this report, we will focus on the state-of-the-art with respect to the theories, methods and technologies used in serious heritage games. We provide an overview of existing literature of relevance to the domain, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the described methods and point out unsolved problems and challenges. In addition, several case studies illustrating the application of methods and technologies used in cultural heritage are presented
AltURI: a thin middleware for simulated robot vision applications
Fast software performance is often the focus when developing real-time vision-based control applications for robot simulators. In this paper we have developed a thin, high performance middleware for USARSim and other simulators designed for real-time vision-based control applications. It includes a fast image server providing images in OpenCV, Matlab or web formats and a simple command/sensor processor. The interface has been tested in USARSim with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle using two control applications; landing using a reinforcement learning algorithm and altitude control using elementary motion detection. The middleware has been found to be fast enough to control the flying robot as well as very easy to set up and use

From Smart Cities To Playable Cities. Towards Playful Intelligence In The Urban Environment
In the last decade, we have seen the rise of urban play as a tool for community building, and city-making and Western society is actively focusing on play/playfulness and intelligent systems as a way to approach complex challenges and emergent situations.
In this paper, we aim to initiate a dialogue between game scholars and architects. Like many creative professions, we believe that the architectural practice may benefit significantly from having more design methodologies at hand, thus improving lateral thinking. We aim at providing new conceptual and operative tools to discuss and reflect on how games and smart systems facilitate long-term the shift from the Smart Cities to the Playable one, where citizens/players have the opportunity to hack the city and use the smart city’s data and digital technology for their purposes to reactivate the urban environment
Expressing social attitudes in virtual agents for social training games
The use of virtual agents in social coaching has increased rapidly in the
last decade. In order to train the user in different situations than can occur
in real life, the virtual agent should be able to express different social
attitudes. In this paper, we propose a model of social attitudes that enables a
virtual agent to reason on the appropriate social attitude to express during
the interaction with a user given the course of the interaction, but also the
emotions, mood and personality of the agent. Moreover, the model enables the
virtual agent to display its social attitude through its non-verbal behaviour.
The proposed model has been developed in the context of job interview
simulation. The methodology used to develop such a model combined a theoretical
and an empirical approach. Indeed, the model is based both on the literature in
Human and Social Sciences on social attitudes but also on the analysis of an
audiovisual corpus of job interviews and on post-hoc interviews with the
recruiters on their expressed attitudes during the job interview
