    The choice of the direct sequence spreading code in DS-CDMA predetermines the properties of the system. This contribution demonstrates that the family of codes exhibiting an interference-free window (IFW) outperforms classic spreading codes, provided that the interfering multi-user and multipath components arrive within this IFW, which may be ensured with the aid of quasi-synchronous adaptive timing advance control. It is demonstrated that the IFW duration may be extended with the advent of multicarrier DS-CDMA proportionately to the number of subcarriers. Hence, the resultant MC DS-CDMA system is capable of exhibiting nearsingle-user performance without employing a multi-user detector. A limitation of the system is that the number of spreading codes exhibiting a certain IFW is limited, although this problem may be mitigated with the aid of novel code design principles

    Comparative Analysis of Peak Correlation Characteristics of Non-Orthogonal Spreading Codes for Wireless Systems

    The performance of a CDMA based wireless system is largely dependent on the characteristics of pseudo-random spreading codes. The spreading codes should be carefully chosen to ensure highest possible peak value of auto-correlation function and lower correlation peaks (side-lobes) at non-zero time-shifts. Simultaneously, zero cross-correlation value at all time shifts is required in order to eliminate the effect of multiple access interference at the receiver. But no such code family exists which possess both characteristics simultaneously. That's why an exhaustive effort has been made in this paper to evaluate the peak correlation characteristics of various non-orthogonal spreading codes and suggest a suitable solution.Comment: 12 Pages, 8 Figures, 3 Table

    Detecção multiutilizador do domínio da frequência para sistemas DS-CDMA

    Doutoramento em Engenharia ElectrotécnicaOs Sinais de Espalhamento de Espectro de Sequência Directa exibem propriedades cicloestacionárias que implicam redundância entre componentes de frequência espaçadas por múltiplos da taxa de símbolo. Nesta tese, é apresentado um cancelador de interferência multiutilizador (Cancelador por translação na frequência - FSC) que tira partido desta propriedade. Este cancelador linear opera no domínio da frequência no sinal espalhado de tal forma que minimiza a interferência e ruído na saída (Critério do Mínimo Erro Quadrado Médio). Além de testado para o caso de antena única, são avaliadas as performances das configurações de antenas múltiplas para o caso de beamforming e canais espacialmente descorrelacionados considerando sistemas síncronos e sistemas com desalinhamento no tempo dos perfis de canais (ambos UMTS-TDD). Essas configurações divergiam na ordem da combinação temporal, combinação espacial e detecção multiutilizador. As configurações FSC foram avaliadas quando concatenadas com o PIC-2D. Os resultados das simulações mostram consideráveis melhorias nos resultados relativamente ao RAKE-2D convencional e PIC-2D. Foi atingida performance próximo ao RAKE de utilizador único quando o FSC foi avaliado concatenado com PIC-2D em quase todas as configurações. Todas as configurações foram avaliadas com modulação QPSK, 8-PSK e 16-QAM. Foi introduzida codificação Turbo e identificou-se as situações da vantagem de utilização do FSC antes do PIC-2D. As modulações 8-PSK e 16-QAM foram igualmente testadas com codificação.Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum signals exhibit cyclostationary properties which imply redundancy between frequency components separated by multiples of the symbol rate. In this thesis a Multiple Access Interference Canceller (Frequency Shift Canceller - FSC) that explores this property is presented. The linear frequency domain canceller operates on the spreaded signal so as to minimize the interference and noise at the output (Minimum Mean Squared Error Criterium). Moreover the FSC was tested with single antenna, the performance of multisensor configurations for the cases of beamforming and uncorrelated spatial channels was evaluated considering both synchronous and time misalignment systems (both UMTS-TDD). Those configurations diverge in temporal combining, spatial combining and multiuser detection order. The FSC configurations were concatenated with PIC-2D structure and evaluated. The simulation results show considerable improvement relative to the conventional RAKE-2D and PIC-2D receiver. A performance close to the single user RAKE case was a achieved when it (FSC) was evaluated jointly with PIC-2D. All the configurations with modulation QPSK, 8-PSK and 16-QAM were evaluated. Turbo Codes were introduced and it was identified the situations which it is advantageous to use the FSC before the PIC-2D. The 8-PSK and 16-QAM modulations were equally tested with coding

    Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado de la UAH en 2015En las últimas décadas, los sistemas de medición de distancias se han beneficiado de los avances en el área de las comunicaciones inalámbricas. En los sistemas basados en CDMA (Code-Division Multiple-Access), las propiedades de correlación de las secuencias empleadas juegan un papel fundamental en el desarrollo de dispositivos de medición de altas prestaciones. Debido a las sumas ideales de correlaciones aperiódicas, los conjuntos de secuencias complementarias, CSS (Complementary Sets of Sequences), son ampliamente utilizados en sistemas CDMA. En ellos, es deseable el uso de arquitecturas eficientes que permitan generar y correlar CSS del mayor número de secuencias y longitudes posibles. Por el término eficiente se hace referencia a aquellas arquitecturas que requieren menos operaciones por muestra de entrada que con una arquitectura directa. Esta tesis contribuye al desarrollo de arquitecturas eficientes de generación/correlación de CSS y derivadas, como son las secuencias LS (Loosely Synchronized) y GPC (Generalized Pairwise Complementary), que permitan aumentar el número de longitudes y/o de secuencias disponibles. Las contribuciones de la tesis pueden dividirse en dos bloques: En primer lugar, las arquitecturas eficientes de generación/correlación para CSS binarios, derivadas en trabajos previos, son generalizadas al alfabeto multinivel (secuencias con valores reales) mediante el uso de matrices de Hadamard multinivel. Este planteamiento tiene dos ventajas: por un lado el aumento del número de longitudes que pueden generarse/correlarse y la eliminación de las limitaciones de las arquitecturas previas en el número de secuencias en el conjunto. Por otro lado, bajo ciertas condiciones, los parámetros de las arquitecturas generalizadas pueden ajustarse para generar/correlar eficientemente CSS binarios de mayor número de longitudes que con las arquitecturas eficientes previas. En segundo lugar, las arquitecturas propuestas son usadas para el desarrollo de nuevos algoritmos de generación/correlación de secuencias derivadas de CSS que reducen el número de operaciones por muestra de entrada. Finalmente, se presenta la aplicación de las secuencias estudiadas en un nuevo sistema de posicionamiento local basado en Ultra-Wideband y en un sistema de posicionamiento local basado en ultrasonidos

    Qs-cdma Systems Using Concatenated Zcz Codes

    The authors propose a novel use of zero correlation zone (ZCZ) codes to increase the performance of quasisynchronous code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. In this new approach, each spread sequence associated to a active user is a concatenation of two or more ZCZ sequences. In the receiver, each of the component sequences is separately correlated in order to recover the original information.
