    User-centered visual analysis using a hybrid reasoning architecture for intensive care units

    One problem pertaining to Intensive Care Unit information systems is that, in some cases, a very dense display of data can result. To ensure the overview and readability of the increasing volumes of data, some special features are required (e.g., data prioritization, clustering, and selection mechanisms) with the application of analytical methods (e.g., temporal data abstraction, principal component analysis, and detection of events). This paper addresses the problem of improving the integration of the visual and analytical methods applied to medical monitoring systems. We present a knowledge- and machine learning-based approach to support the knowledge discovery process with appropriate analytical and visual methods. Its potential benefit to the development of user interfaces for intelligent monitors that can assist with the detection and explanation of new, potentially threatening medical events. The proposed hybrid reasoning architecture provides an interactive graphical user interface to adjust the parameters of the analytical methods based on the users' task at hand. The action sequences performed on the graphical user interface by the user are consolidated in a dynamic knowledge base with specific hybrid reasoning that integrates symbolic and connectionist approaches. These sequences of expert knowledge acquisition can be very efficient for making easier knowledge emergence during a similar experience and positively impact the monitoring of critical situations. The provided graphical user interface incorporating a user-centered visual analysis is exploited to facilitate the natural and effective representation of clinical information for patient care

    Towards analytical provenance visualization for criminal intelligence analysis

    In criminal intelligence analysis to complement the information entailed and to enhance transparency of the operations, it demands logs of the individual processing activities within an automated processing system. Management and tracing of such security sensitive analytical information flow originated from tightly coupled visualizations into visual analytic system for criminal intelligence that triggers huge amount of analytical information on a single click, involves design and development challenges. To lead to a believable story by using scientific methods, reasoning for getting explicit knowledge of series of events, sequences and time surrounding interrelationships with available relevant information by using human perception, cognition, reasoning with database operations and computational methods, an analytic visual judgmental support is obvious for criminal intelligence. Our research outlines the requirements and development challenges of such system as well as proposes a generic way of capturing different complex visual analytical states and processes known as analytic provenance. The proposed technique has been tested into a large heterogeneous event-driven visual analytic modular analystā€™s user interface (AUI) of the project VALCRI (Visual Analytics for Sensemaking in Criminal Intelligence) and evaluated by the police intelligence analysts through itā€™s visual state capturing and retracing interfaces. We have conducted several prototype evaluation sessions with the groups of end-users (police intelligence analysts) and found very positive feedback.     Configuring Semantic Web Interfaces by Data Mapping

    We demonstrate how to develop Web-based user interfaces for Semantic Web applications using commonly available, off-the-shelf Web widget libraries. By formally defining the underlying data model that is assumed by these widgets, Semantic Web application developers can use familiar RDF constructs to map their own data to the model implemented by the Widgets. As an example, we briefly describe the interface model underlying our own framework, and provide concrete examples showing how it has been used to create Semantic Web applications in two different domains. We conclude by discussing the advantages and limitations of our approach

    Knowledge Cartography for Open Sensemaking Communities

    Knowledge Cartography is the discipline of visually mapping the conceptual structure of ideas, such as the connections between issues, concepts, answers, arguments and evidence. The cognitive process of externalising one's understanding clarifies one's own grasp of the situation, as well as communicating it to others as a network that invites their contributions. This sensemaking activity lies at the heart of the Open Educational Resources movement's objectives. The aim of this paper is to describe the usage patterns of Compendium, a knowledge mapping tool from the OpenLearn OER project, using quantitative data from interaction logs and qualitative data from knowledge maps, forums and blog postings. This work explains nine roles played by maps in OpenLearn, and discusses some of the benefits and adoption obstacles, which motivate our ongoing work

    PickCells: A Physically Reconfigurable Cell-composed Touchscreen

    Touchscreens are the predominant medium for interactions with digital services; however, their current fixed form factor narrows the scope for rich physical interactions by limiting interaction possibilities to a single, planar surface. In this paper we introduce the concept of PickCells, a fully reconfigurable device concept composed of cells, that breaks the mould of rigid screens and explores a modular system that affords rich sets of tangible interactions and novel acrossdevice relationships. Through a series of co-design activities ā€“ involving HCI experts and potential end-users of such systems ā€“ we synthesised a design space aimed at inspiring future research, giving researchers and designers a framework in which to explore modular screen interactions. The design space we propose unifies existing works on modular touch surfaces under a general framework and broadens horizons by opening up unexplored spaces providing new interaction possibilities. In this paper, we present the PickCells concept, a design space of modular touch surfaces, and propose a toolkit for quick scenario prototyping
