A web-based system for suggesting new practice material to music learners based on chord content
In this demo paper, a system that suggests new practice material to music learners is presented. It is aimed at music practitioners of any skill set, playing any instrument, as long as they know how to play along with a chord sheet. Users need to select a number of chords in a web app, and are then presented with a list of music pieces containing those chords. Each of those pieces can then be played back while its chord transcription is displayed in sync to the music. This enables a variety of practice scenarios, ranging from following the chords in a piece to using the suggested music as a backing track to practice soloing over. We set out the various interface elements that make up this web application and the thoughts that went behind them. Furthermore, we touch upon the algorithms that are used in the app. Notably, the automatic generation of chord transcriptions â such that large amounts of music can be processed without human intervention â and the query resolution mechanism â finding appropriate music based on the user input and transcription quality â are discussed
Current Challenges and Visions in Music Recommender Systems Research
Music recommender systems (MRS) have experienced a boom in recent years,
thanks to the emergence and success of online streaming services, which
nowadays make available almost all music in the world at the user's fingertip.
While today's MRS considerably help users to find interesting music in these
huge catalogs, MRS research is still facing substantial challenges. In
particular when it comes to build, incorporate, and evaluate recommendation
strategies that integrate information beyond simple user--item interactions or
content-based descriptors, but dig deep into the very essence of listener
needs, preferences, and intentions, MRS research becomes a big endeavor and
related publications quite sparse.
The purpose of this trends and survey article is twofold. We first identify
and shed light on what we believe are the most pressing challenges MRS research
is facing, from both academic and industry perspectives. We review the state of
the art towards solving these challenges and discuss its limitations. Second,
we detail possible future directions and visions we contemplate for the further
evolution of the field. The article should therefore serve two purposes: giving
the interested reader an overview of current challenges in MRS research and
providing guidance for young researchers by identifying interesting, yet
under-researched, directions in the field
Design and Evaluation of a Probabilistic Music Projection Interface
We describe the design and evaluation of a probabilistic
interface for music exploration and casual playlist generation.
Predicted subjective features, such as mood and
genre, inferred from low-level audio features create a 34-
dimensional feature space. We use a nonlinear dimensionality
reduction algorithm to create 2D music maps of
tracks, and augment these with visualisations of probabilistic
mappings of selected features and their uncertainty.
We evaluated the system in a longitudinal trial in usersâ
homes over several weeks. Users said they had fun with the
interface and liked the casual nature of the playlist generation.
Users preferred to generate playlists from a local
neighbourhood of the map, rather than from a trajectory,
using neighbourhood selection more than three times more
often than path selection. Probabilistic highlighting of subjective
features led to more focused exploration in mouse
activity logs, and 6 of 8 users said they preferred the probabilistic
highlighting mode
Music Information Retrieval in Live Coding: A Theoretical Framework

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Music information retrieval (MIR) has a great potential in musical live coding because it can help the musicianâprogrammer to make musical decisions based on audio content analysis and explore new sonorities by means of MIR techniques. The use of real-time MIR techniques can be computationally demanding and thus they have been rarely used in live coding; when they have been used, it has been with a focus on low-level feature extraction. This article surveys and discusses the potential of MIR applied to live coding at a higher musical level. We propose a conceptual framework of three categories: (1) audio repurposing, (2) audio rewiring, and (3) audio remixing. We explored the three categories in live performance through an application programming interface library written in SuperCollider, MIRLC. We found that it is still a technical challenge to use high-level features in real time, yet using rhythmic and tonal properties (midlevel features) in combination with text-based information (e.g., tags) helps to achieve a closer perceptual level centered on pitch and rhythm when using MIR in live coding. We discuss challenges and future directions of utilizing MIR approaches in the computer music field
PIWeCS: enhancing human/machine agency in an interactive composition system
This paper focuses on the infrastructure and aesthetic approach used in PIWeCS: a Public Space Interactive Web-based Composition System. The concern was to increase the sense of dialogue between human and machine agency in an interactive work by adapting Paine's (2002) notion of a conversational model of interaction as a âcomplex systemâ. The machine implementation of PIWeCS is achieved through integrating intelligent agent programming with MAX/MSP. Human input is through a web infrastructure. The conversation is initiated and continued by participants through arrangements and composition based on short performed samples of traditional New Zealand Maori instruments. The system allows the extension of a composition through the electroacoustic manipulation of the source material
Piano Genie
We present Piano Genie, an intelligent controller which allows non-musicians
to improvise on the piano. With Piano Genie, a user performs on a simple
interface with eight buttons, and their performance is decoded into the space
of plausible piano music in real time. To learn a suitable mapping procedure
for this problem, we train recurrent neural network autoencoders with discrete
bottlenecks: an encoder learns an appropriate sequence of buttons corresponding
to a piano piece, and a decoder learns to map this sequence back to the
original piece. During performance, we substitute a user's input for the
encoder output, and play the decoder's prediction each time the user presses a
button. To improve the intuitiveness of Piano Genie's performance behavior, we
impose musically meaningful constraints over the encoder's outputs.Comment: Published as a conference paper at ACM IUI 201
Interactive Spaces. Models and Algorithms for Reality-based Music Applications
Reality-based interfaces have the property of linking the user's physical space with the computer digital content, bringing in intuition, plasticity and expressiveness.
Moreover, applications designed upon motion and gesture tracking technologies involve a lot of psychological features, like space cognition and implicit knowledge.
All these elements are the background of three presented music applications, employing the characteristics of three different interactive spaces: a user centered three dimensional space, a floor bi-dimensional camera space, and a small sensor centered three dimensional space.
The basic idea is to deploy the application's spatial properties in order to convey some musical knowledge, allowing the users to act inside the designed space and to learn through it in an enactive way
