    State of AI-based monitoring in smart manufacturing and introduction to focused section

    Over the past few decades, intelligentization, supported by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, has become an important trend for industrial manufacturing, accelerating the development of smart manufacturing. In modern industries, standard AI has been endowed with additional attributes, yielding the so-called industrial artificial intelligence (IAI) that has become the technical core of smart manufacturing. AI-powered manufacturing brings remarkable improvements in many aspects of closed-loop production chains from manufacturing processes to end product logistics. In particular, IAI incorporating domain knowledge has benefited the area of production monitoring considerably. Advanced AI methods such as deep neural networks, adversarial training, and transfer learning have been widely used to support both diagnostics and predictive maintenance of the entire production process. It is generally believed that IAI is the critical technologies needed to drive the future evolution of industrial manufacturing. This article offers a comprehensive overview of AI-powered manufacturing and its applications in monitoring. More specifically, it summarizes the key technologies of IAI and discusses their typical application scenarios with respect to three major aspects of production monitoring: fault diagnosis, remaining useful life prediction, and quality inspection. In addition, the existing problems and future research directions of IAI are also discussed. This article further introduces the papers in this focused section on AI-based monitoring in smart manufacturing by weaving them into the overview, highlighting how they contribute to and extend the body of literature in this area

    Establishment of a novel predictive reliability assessment strategy for ship machinery

    There is no doubt that recent years, maritime industry is moving forward to novel and sophisticated inspection and maintenance practices. Nowadays maintenance is encountered as an operational method, which can be employed both as a profit generating process and a cost reduction budget centre through an enhanced Operation and Maintenance (O&M) strategy. In the first place, a flexible framework to be applicable on complex system level of machinery can be introduced towards ship maintenance scheduling of systems, subsystems and components.;This holistic inspection and maintenance notion should be implemented by integrating different strategies, methodologies, technologies and tools, suitably selected by fulfilling the requirements of the selected ship systems. In this thesis, an innovative maintenance strategy for ship machinery is proposed, namely the Probabilistic Machinery Reliability Assessment (PMRA) strategy focusing towards the reliability and safety enhancement of main systems, subsystems and maintainable units and components.;In this respect, the combination of a data mining method (k-means), the manufacturer safety aspects, the dynamic state modelling (Markov Chains), the probabilistic predictive reliability assessment (Bayesian Belief Networks) and the qualitative decision making (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) is employed encompassing the benefits of qualitative and quantitative reliability assessment. PMRA has been clearly demonstrated in two case studies applied on offshore platform oil and gas and selected ship machinery.;The results are used to identify the most unreliability systems, subsystems and components, while advising suitable practical inspection and maintenance activities.     Performance-based health monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics for condition-based maintenance of gas turbines: A review

    With the privatization and intense competition that characterize the volatile energy sector, the gas turbine industry currently faces new challenges of increasing operational flexibility, reducing operating costs, improving reliability and availability while mitigating the environmental impact. In this complex, changing sector, the gas turbine community could address a set of these challenges by further development of high fidelity, more accurate and computationally efficient engine health assessment, diagnostic and prognostic systems. Recent studies have shown that engine gas-path performance monitoring still remains the cornerstone for making informed decisions in operation and maintenance of gas turbines. This paper offers a systematic review of recently developed engine performance monitoring, diagnostic and prognostic techniques. The inception of performance monitoring and its evolution over time, techniques used to establish a high-quality dataset using engine model performance adaptation, and effects of computationally intelligent techniques on promoting the implementation of engine fault diagnosis are reviewed. Moreover, recent developments in prognostics techniques designed to enhance the maintenance decision-making scheme and main causes of gas turbine performance deterioration are discussed to facilitate the fault identification module. The article aims to organize, evaluate and identify patterns and trends in the literature as well as recognize research gaps and recommend new research areas in the field of gas turbine performance-based monitoring. The presented insightful concepts provide experts, students or novice researchers and decision-makers working in the area of gas turbine engines with the state of the art for performance-based condition monitoring

    Dynamic Agent Based Modeling Using Bayesian Framework for Addressing Intelligence Adaptive Nuclear Nonproliferation Analysis

    Realistically, no two nuclear proliferating or defensive entities are exactly identical; Agent Based Modeling (ABM) is a computational methodology addressing the uniqueness of those facilitating or preventing nuclear proliferation. The modular Bayesian ABM Nonproliferation Enterprise (BANE) tool has been developed at Texas A &M University for nuclear nonproliferation analysis. Entities engaged in nuclear proliferation cover a range of activities and fall within proliferating, defensive, and neutral agent classes. In BANE proliferating agents pursue nuclear weapons, or at least a latent nuclear weapons capability. Defensive nonproliferation agents seek to uncover, hinder, reverse, or dismantle any proliferation networks they discover. The vast majority of agents are neutral agents, of which only a small subset can significantly enable proliferation. BANE facilitates intelligent agent actions by employing entropy and mutual information for proliferation pathway determinations. Factors including technical success, resource expenditures, and detection probabilities are assessed by agents seeking optimal proliferation postures. Coupling ABM with Bayesian analysis is powerful from an omniscience limitation perspective. Bayesian analysis supports linking crucial knowledge and technology requirements into relationship networks for each proliferation category. With a Bayesian network, gaining information on proliferator actions in one category informs defensive agents where to expend limited counter-proliferation impeding capabilities. Correlating incomplete evidence for pattern recognition in BANE using Bayesian inference draws upon technical supply side proliferation linkages grounded in physics. Potential or current proliferator security, economic trajectory, or other factors modify demand drivers for undertaking proliferation. Using Bayesian inference the coupled demand and supply proliferation drivers are connected to create feedback interactions. Verification and some validation for BANE is performed using scenarios and historical case studies. Restrictive export controls, swings in global soft power affinity, and past proliferation program assessments for entities ranging from the Soviet Union to Iraq demonstrates BANE’s flexibility and applicability. As a newly developed tool, BANE has room for future contributions from computer science, engineering, and social scientists. Through BANE the framework exists for detailed nonproliferation expansion into broader weapons of mass effect analysis; since, nuclear proliferation is but one option for addressing international security concerns

    System diagnosis using a bayesian method

    Today’s engineering systems have become increasingly more complex. This makes fault diagnosis a more challenging task in industry and therefore a significant amount of research has been undertaken on developing fault diagnostic methodologies. So far there already exist a variety of diagnostic methods, from qualitative to quantitative. However, no methods have considered multi-component degradation when diagnosing faults at the system level. For example, from the point a new aircraft takes off for the first time all of its components start to degrade, and yet in previous studies it is presumed that apart from the faulty component, other components in the system are operating in a healthy state. This thesis makes a contribution through the development of an experimental fuel rig to produce high quality data of multi-component degradation and a probabilistic framework based on the Bayesian method to diagnose faults in a system with considering multi-component degradation. The proposed method is implemented on the fuel rig data which illustrates the applicability of the proposed method and the diagnostic results are compared with the neural network method in order to show the capabilities and imperfections of the proposed method

    Identification and diagnosis of concurrent faults in rotor-bearing system with WPT and zero space classifiers

    An effective method for identifying and diagnosing the concurrent fault combined by two or more single faults is yet to be further developed because most existing approaches focus on single faults. On the other hand, rotor-bearing system is an important part of rotating machinery. Therefore a new fault identification and diagnosis method based on wavelet packet transform (WPT) and zero space classifiers is presented in this paper. Firstly, the vibration signals collected from the rotor-bearing system are decomposed into several time-frequency compositions by WPT. Then the appropriate composition characterizing fault signatures is selected to extract features for constructing zero space classifiers. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by an experiment carried out on a machinery fault simulator. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is feasible and effective to identify and diagnose the concurrent faults in a rotor-bearing system

    Computational intelligence techniques for HVAC systems: a review

    Buildings are responsible for 40% of global energy use and contribute towards 30% of the total CO2 emissions. The drive to reduce energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions from buildings has acted as a catalyst in the development of advanced computational methods for energy efficient design, management and control of buildings and systems. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are the major source of energy consumption in buildings and an ideal candidate for substantial reductions in energy demand. Significant advances have been made in the past decades on the application of computational intelligence (CI) techniques for HVAC design, control, management, optimization, and fault detection and diagnosis. This article presents a comprehensive and critical review on the theory and applications of CI techniques for prediction, optimization, control and diagnosis of HVAC systems.The analysis of trends reveals the minimization of energy consumption was the key optimization objective in the reviewed research, closely followed by the optimization of thermal comfort, indoor air quality and occupant preferences. Hardcoded Matlab program was the most widely used simulation tool, followed by TRNSYS, EnergyPlus, DOE–2, HVACSim+ and ESP–r. Metaheuristic algorithms were the preferred CI method for solving HVAC related problems and in particular genetic algorithms were applied in most of the studies. Despite the low number of studies focussing on MAS, as compared to the other CI techniques, interest in the technique is increasing due to their ability of dividing and conquering an HVAC optimization problem with enhanced overall performance.     Application of Wavelets-based SVM Classification for Automated Fault Diagnosis and Prognosis of Mechanical Systems

    Anwendung der Wavelet-basierte SVM Klassifizierung für die automatisierte Fehlerdiagnose und -prognose mechanischer Systeme In dieser Arbeit werden Techniken der Mustererkennung auf verschiedene Problemstellungen der Fehlerdiagnose und -prognose angewendet. Die untersuchten Anwendungen stellen reale industrielle Anwendungen dar, bei denen verschiedene Messeigenschaften (wie zyklische, impulsive, und periodische Signale), verschiedene Charakteristik der Erkennungsobjektiven (wie kumulativ und einmalige Ereignisse), verschiedene Betriebsbedingungen und -parameter der Maschine, und verschiedene Fehler und Erkennungssystemanforderungen (wie Verschleiß, Riss, und Objekterkennung; Systemzustand und Restlebensdauer) die modulare Mustererkennungsverfahren und -techniken erfordern. Verschiedene Ansätze werden untersucht und angewendet, wie Support Vector Machine (SVM), Continuous Wavelet-Transform (CWT),Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) und Diskrete Wavelet-Transform (DWT), und viele Konzepte und Lösungen werden vorgeschlagen und überprüft, um ein zuverlässiges Zustandsüberwachungssystem zu erreichen, dass die Instandhaltungsplanung der Maschine unterstützt und die Produktionsqualität und Produktionskosten verbessert. In der ersten untersuchten Anwendung in dieser Arbeit wird ein Ansatz für die Entwicklung eines Fehlerdiagnose- und -prognosesystems vorgestellt. Das System wird als Vorwarnmodul verwendet, um die Notwendigkeit für das Ersetzen von Verschleißteilen von Produktionsmaschinen zu erkennen und die Restlebensdauer des überwachten Teils zu bewerten. In der zweiten untersuchten Anwendung wird ein Produktionsverfahren überwacht. Ziel ist die Erkennung eines Objektes mit einer möglichst geringen Fehlalarmrate. Die Signale beinhalten nichtstationäre, impulsartige bzw. einmalige Ereignisse. Ein weiteres Merkmal der Sensorcluster-Signale ist die nicht gleichzeitige Erzeugung von Ereignissen, die die Verwendung von geeigneten Entscheidungsfusionstechniken erfordert. In der letzten untersuchten Anwendung, werden modell- und signalbasierte Verfahren für die Risserkennung und Prognose in rotierenden Maschinen untersucht, um eine Vorwarnung für Rotor-Risse zu erreichen für Online- Überwachung in Turbomaschinen. Die angetroffenen Signale sind periodische Schwingungssignale mit kumulativen Auswirkungen der Fehlerereignisse. Offene Fragen stellen sich bei den Themen Zustandsbewertung, Fehlerschweregrad und Restlebensdauer, basierend auf spezifischen Sensordaten mit besonderen anwendungsorientierten Eigenschaften. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit diesen offenen Fragen, um ein zuverlässiges Zustandsüberwachungssystem zu erreichen. Es kann festgestellt werden, dass Wavelets und SVM sehr nützliche Werkzeuge für die Merkmalsextraktion und Klassifikation im Bereich der Zustandsüberwachung sind. Der Merkmalsraum von SVM ist nützlich für die Bewertung der verbleibenden Lebensdauer. Allerdings zeigt sich ebenfalls, dass angesichts der Herausforderungen anwendungsorientierte Lösungen gefunden werden müssen.In this thesis, the application of pattern recognition techniques is considered for different kinds of fault diagnosis and prognosis problems and applications. The investigated applications represent real industrial applications, in which different measurement characteristics (such as cyclic, impulsive, and periodic signals), different recognition objective characteristics (such as accumulative and one-time events), different operational conditions and parameters of the machine, and different faults and detection system requirements (such as wear, crack, and object detection; System state and remaining life time) are challenging the existence of modular pattern recognition procedures and techniques. Different approaches are investigated and applied such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT), and Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), and many concepts and solutions are proposed and verified, in order to achieve a reliable condition monitoring system, which supports the maintenance planning of the machine and adds value to the production quality and cost. In the first investigated application in this thesis, an approach for developing a fault diagnosis and prognosis system is presented. The system is used as a prewarning module to detect the necessity for replacing wear parts of production machines and to evaluate the remaining life time of the supervised part. The sensor signals encountered for processing are nondeterministic with cyclic nature related to the operation cycle of the machine. In the second investigated application, the goal is to monitor a production process for online detection of a target object with the lowest possible false alarm rate. The signals encountered in the system of this work are characterized with nonstationary impulsive one-time events representing the goal object. Another characteristic of the sensor cluster signals is the partly simultaneous stimulation of events which requires the use of suitable decision fusion techniques. In the last investigated application, two main approaches used for crack detection and prediction in rotating machinery; model based and signal based, are investigated, in order to achieve a prewarning technique for rotor cracks to be applied for online monitoring in turbo-machinery. The signals encountered are periodic vibration signals with accumulative impact of the fault incident. Open questions arise in the issues of state evaluation, severity estimation, and remaining life time prediction, based on specific sensor data with particular applicationoriented characteristics. This work deals with these open questions, in order to achieve a reliable condition monitoring system. As a general conclusion of the work, it can be stated that Wavelets and SVM are reliable tools for feature extraction and classification in the field of condition monitoring, and the feature space of SVM is useful for remaining life prediction. However; specific application oriented Solutions and tricks are necessary, considering the diversity of fault diagnosis and prognosis problems and difficulties
