    Algorithm-aided Information Design: Hybrid Design approach on the edge of associative methodologies in AEC

For this historically short period, two generations of methodologies and tools have emerged: Additive generation and parametric Associative generation of CAD. Currently, designers worldwide engaged in new forms of design exploration. From this race, two prominent methodologies have developed from Associative Design approach – Object-Oriented Design (OOD) and Algorithm-Aided Design (AAD). The primary research objective is to investigate, examine, and push boundaries between OOD and AAD for new design space determination, where advantages of both design methods are fused to produce a new generation methodology which is called in the present study AID (Algorithm-aided Information Design). The study methodology is structured into two flows. In the first flow, existing CAD methodologies are investigated, and the conceptual framework is extracted based on the state of art analysis, then analysed data is synthesized into the subject proposal. In the second flow, tools and workflows are elaborated and examined on practice to confirm the subject proposal. In compliance, the content of the research consists of two theoretical and practical parts. In the first theoretical part, a literature review is conducted, and assumptions are made to speculate about AID methodology, its tools, possible advantages and drawbacks. Next, case studies are performed according to sequential stages of digital design through the lens of practical AID methodology implementation. Case studies are covering such design aspects as model & documentation generation, design automation, interoperability, manufacturing control, performance analysis and optimization. Ultimately, a set of test projects is developed with the AID methodology applied. After the practical part, research returns to the theory where analytical information is gathered based on the literature review, conceptual framework, and experimental practice reports. In summary, the study synthesizes AID methodology as part of Hybrid Design, which enables creative use of tools and elaborating of agile design systems integrating additive and associative methodologies of Digital Design.     Using BIM to achieve Architectural Engineering undergraduate learning outcomes

    Building Information Modelling is a process integrating 3D graphics and data. It is being adopted into the AECOO industries and by default into the delivery of undergraduate Architectural Programs. This object approach offers a range of benefits over the more traditional CAD approach that uses lines and arcs and manual techniques, by adding the third dimension and creating a database model. It redefines the ways of thinking and working for students and future architects and architectural engineers. The requirements of architectural programs are defined through their learning objectives to meet professional requirements such as those set by the ARB and the RIBA. This paper aims to investigate how the capabilities of BIM can be utilized to deliver the requirements of undergraduate architectural engineering programs in a more effective manner. . Purpose: to further develop an implementation strategy for BIM in the undergraduate program of architectural engineering that helps in achieving the learning outcomes. Design/Methodology/Approach: In order to ensure transparency and reliability in the formulated solutions, the adopted methodology for this research is the design science since it deals with explicit problems and provides solutions by creating an artifact. The design science method also provides validation for the proposed solution by peer assessment. At the educational level, the study explores the undergraduate curriculum by taking case studies of programs and their learning outcomes that are set under the criteria of ARB and RIBA. The research analyzes these case studies in an attempt to detect the problems and define the requirements to solve the gaps. Findings: The findings of the literature review identify the gaps that exist in the curriculum of the undergraduate architecture programs in the UK. The methodology is designed to develop a framework that acts as a guideline in implementing BIM in education. This paper sets the parameters for tutors to integrate BIM effectively into architectural undergraduate programs which shall promote the development of undergraduate students. Originality/Value: The adoption of BIM within the architectural curriculum has been partial or immature up till this time. This paper addresses the effective implementation of BIM within the undergraduate programs which shall act as an original guideline that can aid professional institutions

    Generative design in building information modelling (BIM) : approaches and requirements

    The integration of generative design (GD) and building information modelling (BIM), as a new technology consolidation, can facilitate the constructability of GD’s automatic design solutions, while improving BIM’s capability in the early design phase. Thus, there has been an increasing interest to study GD-BIM, with current focuses mainly on exploring applications and investigating tools. However, there are a lack of studies regarding methodological relationships and skill requirement based on different development objectives or GD properties; thus, the threshold of developing GD-BIM still seems high. This study conducts a critical review of current approaches for developing GD in BIM, and analyses methodological relationships, skill requirements, and improvement of GD-BIM development. Accordingly, novel perspectives of objective-oriented, GD component-based, and skill-driven GD-BIM development as well as reference guides are proposed. Finally, future research directions, challenges, and potential solutions are discussed. This research aims to guide designers in the building industry to properly determine approaches for developing GD-BIM and inspire researchers’ future studies

    An enormous amount of data is usually needed for the design in the early phases of projects. Right now, computational tools are accessible to help the designer use data and information quickly and effectively to do this. Artificial intelligence, or AI,is a recent field of study that uses, analyzes, and manipulates data to complete tasks and reach goals. Modeling, anomaly detection, association, and grouping are just a few of the many sub-fields that make up the current state of AI, The goal of the current study is to make clear the benefits of using AI into architectural design and to motivate architects to begin doing so. A two-pronged approach is used to achieve this: showcasing the relevant literature and the applicable and desired project. Therefore, the continued promotion and implementation of new computer technologies, such as BIM technology, have had an inescapable significant impact on the Egyptian building sector. In this work, we provide the experiments using the Revit program and their conclusions based on the amount of college education. The architectural design major at higher vocational institutions has seen significant changes at this time. The educational objectives of the institution don\u27t align with the field of architectural design\u27s recent growth. We outline the most recent research on BIM-based architecture education in this article. We contrasted the various software programs used in the education sector, including CAD, SketchUp, and Revit. As a consequence of the experiments and projects using the Revit program during instruction, we receive a BIM competency certificate

    The Potential Impact of BIM on Early Design Stages of Residential Apartment Construction in Ireland: a Computational Design Approach

    The current housing crisis and demand for residential accommodation in Ireland has required a change in the construction industry. The introduction by the Irish Government of the temporary fast track planning arrangement for large scale housing developments delivers a key commitment of the Governments action plan for housing and homelessness. Under these new provisions, planning applications can be made directly to An Bord Pleanála (ABP) and not to a local planning authority as was previously the case. This introduction has required the design team to provide sufficient information to enable ABP to offer an opinion and give direction on any amendments required to allow the project to proceed to the application stage. If significant changes are requested, this will result in major redesign work for the architect and other design team members. By adopting BIM methodologies at this early stage, the design team has the potential to automate the process through early design collaboration and improved coordination. This paper will begin by focusing on the current usage of BIM processes during early stages of residential design in both Ireland and the UK and investigate through a literature study the impact BIM has currently made on the sector. The paper will propose the potential use of adopting computational design tools and methods to enhance the delivery of architectural designs through BIM methodologies. A graphical programming tool, Dynamo, will be used to demonstrate the integration into a stage BIM workflow. The experimental research will be appraised by selected industry professionals and feedback will be gathered to evaluate the potential future for computational design tools in the field of architectural design of residential units
