Multicriteria global optimization for biocircuit design
One of the challenges in Synthetic Biology is to design circuits with
increasing levels of complexity. While circuits in Biology are complex and
subject to natural tradeoffs, most synthetic circuits are simple in terms of
the number of regulatory regions, and have been designed to meet a single
design criterion. In this contribution we introduce a multiobjective
formulation for the design of biocircuits. We set up the basis for an advanced
optimization tool for the modular and systematic design of biocircuits capable
of handling high levels of complexity and multiple design criteria. Our
methodology combines the efficiency of global Mixed Integer Nonlinear
Programming solvers with multiobjective optimization techniques. Through a
number of examples we show the capability of the method to generate non
intuitive designs with a desired functionality setting up a priori the desired
level of complexity. The presence of more than one competing objective provides
a realistic design setting where every design solution represents a trade-off
between different criteria. The tool can be useful to explore and identify
different design principles for synthetic gene circuits
Intelligent systems in manufacturing: current developments and future prospects
Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are demanding increasing changes in manufacturing environments. Enterprises are required to constantly redesign their products and continuously reconfigure their manufacturing systems. Traditional approaches to manufacturing systems do not fully satisfy this new situation. Many authors have proposed that artificial intelligence will bring the flexibility and efficiency needed by manufacturing systems. This paper is a review of artificial intelligence techniques used in manufacturing systems. The paper first defines the components of a simplified intelligent manufacturing systems (IMS), the different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to be considered and then shows how these AI techniques are used for the components of IMS
Energy management in communication networks: a journey through modelling and optimization glasses
The widespread proliferation of Internet and wireless applications has
produced a significant increase of ICT energy footprint. As a response, in the
last five years, significant efforts have been undertaken to include
energy-awareness into network management. Several green networking frameworks
have been proposed by carefully managing the network routing and the power
state of network devices.
Even though approaches proposed differ based on network technologies and
sleep modes of nodes and interfaces, they all aim at tailoring the active
network resources to the varying traffic needs in order to minimize energy
consumption. From a modeling point of view, this has several commonalities with
classical network design and routing problems, even if with different
objectives and in a dynamic context.
With most researchers focused on addressing the complex and crucial
technological aspects of green networking schemes, there has been so far little
attention on understanding the modeling similarities and differences of
proposed solutions. This paper fills the gap surveying the literature with
optimization modeling glasses, following a tutorial approach that guides
through the different components of the models with a unified symbolism. A
detailed classification of the previous work based on the modeling issues
included is also proposed
Gaps and requirements for applying automatic architectural design to building renovation
The renovation of existing buildings provides an opportunity to change the layout to meet the needs of facilities and accomplish sustainability in the built environment at high utilisation rates and low cost. However, building renovation design is complex, and completing architectural design schemes manually needs more efficiency and overall robustness. With the use of computational optimisation, automatic architectural design (AAD) can efficiently assist in building renovation through decision-making based on performance evaluation. This paper comprehensively analyses AAD's current research status and provides a state-of-the-art overview of applying AAD technology to building renovation. Besides, gaps and requirements of using AAD for building renovation are explored from quantitative and qualitative aspects, providing ideas for future research. The research shows that there is still much work to be done to apply AAD to building renovation, including quickly obtaining input data, expanding optimisation topics, selecting design methods, and improving workflow and efficiency
Multiobjective scheduling for semiconductor manufacturing plants
Scheduling of semiconductor wafer manufacturing system is identified as a complex problem, involving multiple and conflicting objectives (minimization of facility average utilization, minimization of waiting time and storage, for instance) to simultaneously satisfy. In this study, we propose an efficient approach based on an artificial neural network technique embedded into a multiobjective genetic algorithm for multi-decision scheduling problems in a semiconductor wafer fabrication environment
A robust solving strategy for the vehicle routing problem with multiple depots and multiple objectives
This document presents the development of a robust solving strategy for the Vehicle Routing Problem with Multiple Depots and Multiple Objectives (MO-MDVRP). The problem tackeled in this work is the problem to minimize the total cost and the load imbalance in vehicle routing plan for distribution of goods. This thesis presents a MILP mathematical model and a solution strategy based on a Hybrid Multi- Objective Scatter Search Algorithm. Several experiments using simulated instances were run proving that the proposed method is quite robust, this is shown in execution times (less than 4 minutes for an instance with 8 depots and 300 customers); also, the proposed method showed good results compared to the results found with the MILP model for small instances (up to 20 clients and 2 depots).MaestríaMagister en Ingeniería Industria
