    Actors vs Shared Memory: two models at work on Big Data application frameworks

    This work aims at analyzing how two different concurrency models, namely the shared memory model and the actor model, can influence the development of applications that manage huge masses of data, distinctive of Big Data applications. The paper compares the two models by analyzing a couple of concrete projects based on the MapReduce and Bulk Synchronous Parallel algorithmic schemes. Both projects are doubly implemented on two concrete platforms: Akka Cluster and Managed X10. The result is both a conceptual comparison of models in the Big Data Analytics scenario, and an experimental analysis based on concrete executions on a cluster platform

    Asynchronous techniques for system-on-chip design

    SoC design will require asynchronous techniques as the large parameter variations across the chip will make it impossible to control delays in clock networks and other global signals efficiently. Initially, SoCs will be globally asynchronous and locally synchronous (GALS). But the complexity of the numerous asynchronous/synchronous interfaces required in a GALS will eventually lead to entirely asynchronous solutions. This paper introduces the main design principles, methods, and building blocks for asynchronous VLSI systems, with an emphasis on communication and synchronization. Asynchronous circuits with the only delay assumption of isochronic forks are called quasi-delay-insensitive (QDI). QDI is used in the paper as the basis for asynchronous logic. The paper discusses asynchronous handshake protocols for communication and the notion of validity/neutrality tests, and completion tree. Basic building blocks for sequencing, storage, function evaluation, and buses are described, and two alternative methods for the implementation of an arbitrary computation are explained. Issues of arbitration, and synchronization play an important role in complex distributed systems and especially in GALS. The two main asynchronous/synchronous interfaces needed in GALS-one based on synchronizer, the other on stoppable clock-are described and analyzed

    Testing self-timed circuits using partial scan

    Journal ArticleThis paper presents a partial scan method for testing both the control and data path parts of macromodule based self-timed circuits for stuck-at faults. Compared with other proposed test methods for testing control paths in self-timed circuits, this technique offers better fault coverage under a stuck-at input model than methods using self-checking properties, and requires fewer storage elements to be made scanable than full scan approaches with similar fault coverage. A new method is proposed to test the sequential network in the control path in this partial scan environment. The partial scan approach has also been applied to datapaths, where structural analysis is used to select which latches should be made scannable to break cycles in the circuit. Experimental data is presented to show that high fault coverage is possible using this method with only a subset of storage elements in the control and data paths being made scannable

    MINIMALIST: An Environment for the Synthesis, Verification and Testability of Burst-Mode Asynchronous Machines

    MINIMALIST is a new extensible environment for the synthesis and verification of burst-mode asynchronous finite-state machines. MINIMALIST embodies a complete technology-independent synthesis path, with state-of-the-art exact and heuristic asynchronous synthesis algorithms, e.g.optimal state assignment (CHASM), two-level hazard-free logic minimization (HFMIN, ESPRESSO-HF, and IMPYMIN), and synthesis-for-testability. Unlike other asynchronous synthesis packages, MINIMALIST also offers many options:literal vs. product optimization, single- vs. multi-output logic minimization, using vs. not using fed-back outputs as state variables, and exploring varied code lengths during state assignment, thus allowing the designer to explore trade-offs and select the implementation style which best suits the application. MINIMALIST benchmark results demonstrate its ability to produce implementations with an average of 34% and up to 48% less area, and an average of 11% and up to 37% better performance, than the best existing package. Our synthesis-for-testability method guarantees 100% testability under both stuck-at and robust path delay fault models,requiring little or no overhead. MINIMALIST also features both command-line and graphic user interfaces, and supports extension via well-defined interfaces for adding new tools. As such, it is easily augmented to form a complete path to technology-dependent logic

    Synthesis heuristics for large asynchronous sequential circuits

    Many well-known synthesis procedures for asynchronous sequential circuits produce minimal or near-minimal results, but are practical only for very small problems. These algorithms become unwieldy when applied to large circuits with, for example, three or more input variables and twenty or more internal states. New heuristic procedures are described which permit the synthesis of very large machines. Although the resulting designs are generally not minimal, the heuristics are able to produce near-minimal solutions orders of magnitude more rapidly than the minimal algorithms. A method for specifying sequential circuit behavior is presented. Input-output sequences define submachines or modules. When properly interconnected, these modules form the required sequential circuit. It is shown that the waveform and interconnection specifications may easily be translated into flow table form. A large flow table simplification heuristic is developed. The algorithm may be applied to tables having hundreds of rows, and handles both normal and non-normal mode circuit specifications. Nonstandard state assignment procedures for normal, fundamental mode asynchronous sequential circuits are examined. An algorithm for rapidly generating large flow table internal state assignments is proposed. The algorithms described have been programmed in PL/1 and incorporated into an automated design system for asynchronous circuits; the system also includes minimum and near-minimum variable state assignment generators, a code evaluation routine, a design equation generator, and two Boolean equation simplification procedures.
