Becta review 2006. Evidence on the progress of ICT in education.
This is the review of the use and impact of ICT in the education system prior to the publication of the Government's e-Strategy for the education system, known as Harnessing Technology. The Review drew upon Becta's surveys of schools and FE colleges as well as other research to assess the impact of technology within the education system and the progress made in achieving Government policies in 2005-06
Harnessing Openness to Improve Research, Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
Colleges and universities should embrace the concept of increased openness in the use and sharing of information to improve higher education. That is the core recommendation of this report. The report was produced by CED's Digital Connections Council (DCC), a group of information technology experts that advises CED's business leaders on cutting-edge technologies
An SDI for the GIS-education at the UGent Geography Department
The UGent Geography Department (GD) (ca. 200 students; 10 professors) has been teaching GIS since the mid 90âs. Ever since, GIS has evolved from Geographic Information Systems, to GIScience, to GIServices; implying that a GIS specialist nowadays has to deal with more than just desktop GIS. Knowledge about the interaction between different components of an SDI (spatial data, technologies, laws and policies, people and standards) is crucial for a graduated Master student. For its GIS education, the GD has until recently been using different sources of datasets, which were stored in a non-centralized system. In conformity with the INSPIRE Directive and the Flemish SDI Decree, the GD aims to set-up its own SDI using free and open source software components, to improve the management, user-friendliness, copyright protection and centralization of datasets and the knowledge of state of the art SDI structure and technology.
The central part of the system is a PostGIS-database in which both staff and students can create and share information stored in a multitude of tables and schemas. A web-based application facilitates upper-level management of the database for administrators and staff members. Exercises in various courses not only focus on accessing and handling data from the SDI through common GIS-applications as QuantumGIS or GRASS, but also aim at familiarizing students with the set-up of widely used SDI-elements as WMS, WFS and WCS services.
The (dis)advantages of the new SDI will be tested in a case study in which the workflow of a typical âGIS Applicationsâ exercise is elaborated. By solving a problem of optimal location, students interact in various ways with geographic data. A comparison is made between the situation before and after the implementation of the SDI
Reusable e-learning development: Case studies, practices and issues of awareness for knowledge-based organisations
Reusable e-learning development (RED) is defined as the cloning, modification and customisation of existing files or source codes for developing another website or another web-based application. RED does not imply just copying and changing existing files or source codes but rather, it provides a practical technique for time-saving, improving efficiency and maximising utility of existing resources for creating another website or another web-based application. RED is particularly useful for a large-scale web development, where there is an extremely high degree of overlapping of information, resources and web designs. Therefore, RED has been widely adopted by many knowledge-based organisations (KBO). In order to investigate the impacts of RED on KBO, various case studies, practices and issues of awareness for KBO are presented and analysed. This paper particularly focuses on studies and recommended practices from the University of Cambridge. Results from these case studies reveal a number of outcomes
Open educational resources : conversations in cyberspace
172 p. : ill. ; 25 cm.Libro ElectrĂłnicoEducation systems today face two major challenges: expanding the reach of education and improving its quality. Traditional solutions will not suffice, especially in the context of today's knowledge-intensive societies. The Open Educational Resources movement offers one solution for extending the reach of education and expanding learning opportunities. The goal of the movement is to equalize access to knowledge worldwide through openly and freely available online high-quality content. Over the course of two years, the international community came together in a series of online discussion forums to discuss the concept of Open Educational Resources and its potential. This publication makes the background papers and reports from those discussions available in print.--Publisher's description.A first forum : presenting the open educational resources (OER) movement. An Interactive Web-based Application as Educational Tool for SCM Course by Using FOSS
This paper presents the application of free/open source software
(FOSS) for teaching and learning one specific topic in Supply
Chain Management (SCM) course. In the last few years, there is
abundant FOSS for educational tools. However, educator still
faces problems to implement such an education FOSS for
improving the quality of education i.e. customizing of software
function, developing of a specific educational media, and
illustrating of a course content. The purpose of this research is to
design an educational tool for increasing efficiency in conveying
subject matter especially distribution problem. It has a module of
real distribution problem in commodity paddy was captured. We
crated an interactive Web-based application by using WSDL,
PHP and My SQL, and SOAP. The result of the research will be
able to improve the pedagogic approach for learning of SCM
course.
