Rotterdam: Erasmus Plus BV, OECR ISBN 90-9016127-9The era we are living in is often referred to as the “information age” because new information and communication technology (ICT) has had an enormous influence and a revolutionary impact to change the way we do business, live and learn. New educational concepts, technologies and course contents will be required with consideration of topics, e.g. - Teaching/learning strategies, - E-learning environments, - Development and production of learning modules, - Web-based learning resources/tools, - Virtual learning labs/classrooms in conventional universities, - Collaborative learning in small groups, - Policies, ethics, worldwide (EU) standards. These new ICT systems open up new forms and ways of learning. In the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) granted project "Teaching and Training Network in Neurosurgery" (TT-Net), modern multimedia and information technology is used in the hospital in order to leverage it for the training of students and physicians. The aim is to compose web-based course modules for a virtual education system for neurological diseases. The TT-Net is being realized in a very well equipped and highly competent learning environment in the Hannover Medical School campus network

    Shifting new media: from content to consultancy, from heterarchy to hierarchy

    This is a detailed case history of one of London’s iconic new media companies, AMX Studios. Some of the changes in this firm, we assume, are not untypical for other firms in this sector. Particularly we want to draw attention to two transformations. The first change in AMX and in London’s new media industry more generally refers to the field of industrial relations. What can be observed is a shift from a rather heterarchical towards a more hierarchical organized new media industry, a shift from short-term project networks to long-term client dependency. The second change refers to new media products and services. We want to argue for a shift from cool content production towards consultancy and interactive communications solutions

    The design and implementation of an adaptive e-learning system

    This paper describes the design and implementation of an adaptive e-learning system that provides a template for different learning materials as well as a student model that incorporates five distinct student characteristics as an aid to learning: primary characteristics are prior knowledge, learning style and the presence or absence of animated multimedia aids (multimedia mode); secondary characteristics include page background preference and link colour preference. The use of multimedia artefacts as a student characteristic has not previously been implemented or evaluated. The system development consists of a requirements analysis, design and implementation. The design models including use case diagrams, conceptual design, sequence diagrams, navigation design and presentation design are expressed using Unified Modelling Language (UML). The adaptive e-learning system was developed in a template implemented using Java Servlets, XHTML, XML, JavaScript and HTML. The template is a domain-independent adaptive e-learning system that has functions of both adaptivity and adaptability

    Why People Search for Images using Web Search Engines

    What are the intents or goals behind human interactions with image search engines? Knowing why people search for images is of major concern to Web image search engines because user satisfaction may vary as intent varies. Previous analyses of image search behavior have mostly been query-based, focusing on what images people search for, rather than intent-based, that is, why people search for images. To date, there is no thorough investigation of how different image search intents affect users' search behavior. In this paper, we address the following questions: (1)Why do people search for images in text-based Web image search systems? (2)How does image search behavior change with user intent? (3)Can we predict user intent effectively from interactions during the early stages of a search session? To this end, we conduct both a lab-based user study and a commercial search log analysis. We show that user intents in image search can be grouped into three classes: Explore/Learn, Entertain, and Locate/Acquire. Our lab-based user study reveals different user behavior patterns under these three intents, such as first click time, query reformulation, dwell time and mouse movement on the result page. Based on user interaction features during the early stages of an image search session, that is, before mouse scroll, we develop an intent classifier that is able to achieve promising results for classifying intents into our three intent classes. Given that all features can be obtained online and unobtrusively, the predicted intents can provide guidance for choosing ranking methods immediately after scrolling

    This paper addresses the focus of this special issue by analyzing the potential contribution of linguistic content and other non-image aspects to the processing of audiovisual data. It summarizes the various ways in which linguistic content analysis contributes to enhancing the semantic annotation of multimedia content, and, as a consequence, to improving the effectiveness of conceptual media access tools.
