    Optimizing of the Balanced Scorecard method for management of mining companies with the use of factor analysis

    The managers of information age companies cannot rely merely on data derived from past activities of the company and focus on improving existing processes. They need a frame for measuring values that result from strategic goals of the company, a tool, which is focusing on obtaining information about company's current success, as well as finding new driving forces to ensure the future competitiveness of the company. Strategic business performance measurement system the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is a suitable tool for improving the competitiveness of industrial companies. During its implementation, however, there is a conflict of perception of the importance of individual goals and measurable characteristics in partial perspectives of the BSC and its actual enforcement of the various strategic objectives in companies. The aim of this article is to verify the accuracy of BSC settings in an environment of selected companies in the Moravian-Silesian region with the emphasis placed on mining companies with the help of multidimensional statistics - factor analysis.     Evaluation of in-situ shrinkage and expansion properties of polymer composite materials for adhesive anchor systems by a novel approach based on digital image correlation

    The curing reaction of thermosetting resins is associated with chemical shrinkage which is overlapped with thermal expansion as a result of the exothermal enthalpy. Final material properties of the polymer are determined by this critical process. For adhesive anchor systems the overall shrinkage behavior of the material is very important for the ultimate bond behavior between adhesive and the borehole wall. An approach for the insitu measurement of 3-dimensional shrinkage and thermal expansion with digital image correlation (DIC) is presented, overcoming the common limitation of DIC to solids. Two polymer-based anchor systems (filled epoxy, vinylester) were investigated and models were developed, showing good agreement with experimental results. Additionally, measurements with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) provided supporting information about the curing reaction. The vinylester system showed higher shrinkage but much faster reaction compared to the investigated epoxy

    Epidemiologic observations guiding clinical application of a urinary peptidomic marker of diastolic left ventricular dysfunction

    Hypertension, obesity, and old age are major risk factors for left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), but easily applicable screening tools for people at risk are lacking. We investigated whether HF1, a urinary biomarker consisting of 85 peptides, can predict over a 5-year time span mildly impaired diastolic LV function as assessed by echocardiography. In 645 white Flemish (50.5% women; 50.9 years [mean]), we measured HF1 by capillary electrophoresis coupled with mass spectrometry in 2005-2010. We measured early (E) and late (A) peak velocities of the transmitral blood flow and early (e') and late (a') mitral annular peak velocities and their ratios in 2009-2013. In multivariable-adjusted analyses, per 1-standard deviation increment in HF1, e' was -0.193 cm/s lower (95% confidence interval: -0.352 to -0.033; P = .018) and E/e' 0.174 units higher (0.005-0.342; P = .043). Of 645 participants, 179 (27.8%) had LVDD at follow-up, based on impaired relaxation in 69 patients (38.5%) or an elevated filling pressure in the presence of a normal (74 [43.8%]) or low (36 [20.1%]) age-specific E/A ratio. For a 1-standard deviation increment in HF1, the adjusted odds ratio was 1.37 (confidence interval, 1.07-1.76; P = .013). The integrated discrimination (+1.14%) and net reclassification (+31.7%) improvement of the optimized HF1 threshold (-0.350) in discriminating normal from abnormal diastolic LV function at follow-up over and beyond other risk factors was significant (P ≤ .024). In conclusion, HF1 may allow screening for LVDD over a 5-year horizon in asymptomatic people

    Ocular Refraction at Birth and Its Development During the First Year of Life in a Large Cohort of Babies in a Single Center in Northern Italy

    The purpose of this study was to investigate refraction at birth and during the first year of life in a large cohort of babies born in a single center in Northern Italy. We also aimed to analyze refractive errors in relation to the gestational age at birth. An observational ophthalmological assessment was performed within 24 h of birth on 12,427 newborns. Refraction was examined using streak retinoscopy after the administration of tropicamide (1%). Values in the range of between +0.50 ≤ D ≤ +4.00 were defined as physiological refraction at birth. Newborns with refraction values outside of the physiological range were followed up during the first year of life. Comparative analyses were conducted in a subgroup of babies with known gestational ages. The following distribution of refraction at birth was recorded: 88.03% of the babies had physiological refraction, 5.03% had moderate hyperopia, 2.14% had severe hyperopia, 3.4%, had emmetropia, 0.45%, had myopia, 0.94% had astigmatism, and 0.01% had anisometropia. By the end of the first year of life, we observed reductions in hyperopia and astigmatism, and stabilization of myopia. Preterm babies had a four-fold higher risk of congenital myopia and a three-fold higher risk of congenital emmetropia as compared to term babies. Refraction profiles obtained at birth changed during the first year of life, leading to a normalization of the refraction values.     iLIR : a web resource for prediction of Atg8-family interacting proteins

    Macroautophagy was initially considered to be a nonselective process for bulk breakdown of cytosolic material. However, recent evidence points toward a selective mode of autophagy mediated by the so-called selective autophagy receptors (SARs). SARs act by recognizing and sorting diverse cargo substrates (e.g., proteins, organelles, pathogens) to the autophagic machinery. Known SARs are characterized by a short linear sequence motif (LIR-, LRS-, or AIM-motif) responsible for the interaction between SARs and proteins of the Atg8 family. Interestingly, many LIR-containing proteins (LIRCPs) are also involved in autophagosome formation and maturation and a few of them in regulating signaling pathways. Despite recent research efforts to experimentally identify LIRCPs, only a few dozen of this class of—often unrelated—proteins have been characterized so far using tedious cell biological, biochemical, and crystallographic approaches. The availability of an ever-increasing number of complete eukaryotic genomes provides a grand challenge for characterizing novel LIRCPs throughout the eukaryotes. Along these lines, we developed iLIR, a freely available web resource, which provides in silico tools for assisting the identification of novel LIRCPs. Given an amino acid sequence as input, iLIR searches for instances of short sequences compliant with a refined sensitive regular expression pattern of the extended LIR motif (xLIR-motif) and retrieves characterized protein domains from the SMART database for the query. Additionally, iLIR scores xLIRs against a custom position-specific scoring matrix (PSSM) and identifies potentially disordered subsequences with protein interaction potential overlapping with detected xLIR-motifs. Here we demonstrate that proteins satisfying these criteria make good LIRCP candidates for further experimental verification. Domain architecture is displayed in an informative graphic, and detailed results are also available in tabular form. We anticipate that iLIR will assist with elucidating the full complement of LIRCPs in eukaryotes

    Do Indirect Cost Rates Matter?

    This study addresses the relationship between a university\u27s indirect cost rate and its level of federal research funding. Both direct and indirect cost funding are examined. The data used in the analyses include unpublished institutional level data for all doctoral and research universities on funding and indirect cost rates obtained from the National Science Foundation for the fiscal years 1988 to 1997 period. Our major finding is that higher indirect cost rates are associated with higher levels of direct and indirect cost funding for institutions that initially are among the largest recipients of federal funding. In contrast, for universities initially in the lower tail of funding recipients, higher indirect cost rates are associated with lower levels of direct and indirect cost funding. This pattern of results is hypothesized to be based upon an institution\u27s indirect cost rate serving primarily as a price of research for lesser institutions but serving primarily as a proxy for the quality of the institution\u27s research infrastructure for the major recipients of federal funds. Our findings are consistent with the observation that since 1990 both indirect cost rates and shares of research funding for major private research universities have tended to decline. We find no evidence that faculty at major research universities are disadvantaged in their quests for external research funding by high indirect cost rates
