Dear reader, I am delighted to introduce this eighth volume of Creating Knowledge: The LAS Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship. This volume features 19 essays and 14 art works, representing advanced coursework produced in twenty different departments and programs during the 2014-2015 academic year. Several of the essays have been honored with department awards and several draw on research supported by undergraduate research grants. Many were originally written in senior capstone seminars, research-intensive seminars, and independent studies, and many were presented in some form at one of the numerous conferences and showcases sponsored by departments and programs throughout the year. All have been selected by department-based faculty committees as the best of the year’s student research writing and all have been revised for submission under the supervision of faculty. (The first footnote to each essay provides information about the class in which it was written and the processes of selection and revision.) Together they represent the rich variety of research questions, methods and materials used in the arts, humanities, social sciences and interdisciplinary studies. The readers of this volume are also many and various. They include the faculty who taught the classes in which this work was produced and encouraged their students to submit it for publication, the faculty who reviewed and selected the work and those who assisted with the editing, the proud parents, siblings, and classmates, and, of course, the featured students themselves. The volume’s readers also include alumni and supporters of the college and, perhaps most important of all, future student scholars—prospective students and recently admitted students who are curious about what advanced work in this or that field looks like: What does a sociology, Latino and Latin American studies, or philosophy major do? What are the key research questions and ways of thinking or writing or knowing in history of art and architecture or Italian or women’s and gender studies? For these students, this volume provides a vivid and inspiring illustration of what they have to look forward to as they embark upon their chosen courses of study. Many thanks and hearty congratulations are due to the student scholars for their contributions to this volume and also to the more than 60 faculty who supported, reviewed, selected, and helped to edit these students’ work. Thanks are also due to the three Department of Art, Media and Design faculty who served as jurors of the art work and the three masters in writing and publication students who proofread the volume. Most of all, thanks are due to Warren Schultz, associate dean of undergraduate studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, who serves as editor of the volume, putting out the call for submissions, supporting the faculty work of reviewing, selecting, and editing the student essays, and coordinating the production of the print and digital editions. To all, congratulations! And to you, dear reader, enjoy. Lucy Rinehart, PhD Interim Deanhttps://via.library.depaul.edu/ckgallery/1007/thumbnail.jp

Quantum gate algorithm for reference-guided DNA sequence alignment

Reference-guided DNA sequencing and alignment is an important process in computational molecular biology. The amount of DNA data grows very fast, and many new genomes are waiting to be sequenced while millions of private genomes need to be re-sequenced. Each human genome has 3.2 B base pairs, and each one could be stored with 2 bits of information, so one human genome would take 6.4 B bits or about 760 MB of storage (National Institute of General Medical Sciences). Today most powerful tensor processing units cannot handle the volume of DNA data necessitating a major leap in computing power. It is, therefore, important to investigate the usefulness of quantum computers in genomic data analysis, especially in DNA sequence alignment. Quantum computers are expected to be involved in DNA sequencing, initially as parts of classical systems, acting as quantum accelerators. The number of available qubits is increasing annually, and future quantum computers could conduct DNA sequencing, taking the place of classical computing systems. We present a novel quantum algorithm for reference-guided DNA sequence alignment modeled with gate-based quantum computing. The algorithm is scalable, can be integrated into existing classical DNA sequencing systems and is intentionally structured to limit computational errors. The quantum algorithm has been tested using the quantum processing units and simulators provided by IBM Quantum, and its correctness has been confirmed.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure

Gender Analysis of Fish Production in Gambela Region, Ethiopia

Get PDF
Women’s access to and control over productive resources is highly constrained in most of the developing world. These constraints are usually overlooked. Gender analysis is very crucial to unpack the existing constraints and see the gap that affects technology transfer among men and women. The Objective of this study is to conduct gender analysis of capture fishery in selected woredas in Gambela region. The study was conducted in four purposively selected woredas of Anua Zone, Gambela region. Sample selection was done on household bases. Out of the 520 fisher households in the woredas, 10% of them are taken based on the minimum standard sample size requirements for social sciences. Among these, 190 were female (FHHHs) while 330 were male headed households (MHHHs). The determination of sample size is based on PPS to the size of the overall population engaged in fisheries. As a result, 19 FHHHs and 33MHHHs were included in the research. Quantitative data was collected using structured questionnaire from 52 households. In addition, a focus group discussion was made to elicit more information on gender roles and relationships. The output of the study indicated that, men in MHHHs are entirely responsible for the fishing activity. In addition, women & youth in MHHHs have a significant role in maintaining the daily harvest of fish. Women in FHHHs are traditionally represented for collecting, processing, cooking and selling the catch. Though decision on selling the catch is mainly carried out by men, women were also found to have a say. Despite women’s involvement in value adding processes of capture fishery, a significant gap was observed between men and women headed households in accessing extension services. Thus, there is a significant difference in volume of fish harvested per fish type per day which was 10.5 and 7.5 kilograms per day for Male headed household and female headed household respectively. Daily fish catch of women headed household should be increased by offering improved fishing equipments. Student Response Systems: A Multidisciplinary Analysis Using Visual Analytics

Get PDF
In recent years, several innovations have emerged in the field of education, including Blended-Learning, Massive Open Online Courses, Flipped Classroom and Gamification. In particular, several investigations have highlighted the effectiveness of student response systems, or clickers, in different subjects and disciplines. Although some literature reviews have been published on this subject, none of them offer a review of a large volume of publications from a multidisciplinary approach. Similarly, in the literature there are no studies that have analyzed scientific collaborations on this subject. To respond to these concerns, we proposed the use of a bot to retrieve information from a large number of papers (1696 documents co-authored by a total of 4091 researchers) included in the Scopus database. The disciplines covered include natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical and health sciences, agricultural and veterinary sciences, social sciences and humanities, and the arts. The review of the literature reveals that student response systems are generally well-perceived by teachers and students in all the disciplines. Another interesting result achieved from visual data obtained using network visualization software and word clouds is that student response systems are mainly used in some disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, medicine, and nursing. It is clearly observed that the relationship between researchers from the same country is stronger than between researchers from different countries. Finally, some reflections are included on the role of student response systems in online teaching, especially regarding the changes experienced after the COVID-19 pandemic
