    Preference-based evolutionary algorithm for airport runway scheduling and ground movement optimisation

    As airports all over the world are becoming more congested together with stricter environmental regulations put in place, research on optimisation of airport surface operations started to consider both time and fuel related objectives. However, as both time and fuel can have a monetary cost associated with them, this information can be utilised as preference during the optimisation to guide the search process to a region with the most cost efficient solutions. In this paper, we solve the integrated optimisation problem combining runway scheduling and ground movement problem by using a multi-objective evolutionary framework. The proposed evolutionary algorithm is based on modified crowding distance and outranking relation which considers cost of delay and price of fuel. Moreover, the preferences are expressed in a such way, that they define a certain range in prices reflecting uncertainty. The preliminary results of computational experiments with data from a major airport show the efficiency of the proposed approach

    Many-objective design of reservoir systems - Applications to the Blue Nile

    This work proposes a multi-criteria optimization-based approach for supporting the negotiated design of multireservoir systems. The research addresses the multi-reservoir system design problem (selecting among alternative options, reservoir sizing), the capacity expansion problem (timing the activation of new assets and the filling of new large reservoirs) and management of multi-reservoir systems at various expansion stages. The aim is to balance multiple long and short-term performance objectives of relevance to stakeholders with differing interests. The work also investigates how problem re-formulations can be used to improve computational efficiency at the design and assessment stage and proposes a framework for post-processing of many objective optimization results to facilitate negotiation among multiple stakeholders. The proposed methods are demonstrated using the Blue Nile in a suite of proof-of-concept studies. Results take the form of Pareto-optimal trade-offs where each point on the curve or surface represents the design of water resource systems (i.e., asset choice, size, implementation dates of reservoirs, and operating policy) and coordination strategies (e.g., cost sharing and power trade) where further benefits in one measure necessarily come at the expense of another. Technical chapters aim to offer practical Nile management and/or investment recommendations deriving from the analysis which could be refined in future more detailed studies

    Methodology for Comparison of Algorithms for Real-World Multi-objective Optimization Problems: Space Surveillance Network Design

    Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is an activity vital to protecting national and commercial satellites from damage or destruction due to collisions. Recent research has demonstrated a methodology using evolutionary algorithms (EAs) which is intended to develop near-optimal Space Surveillance Network (SSN) architectures in the sense of low cost, low latency, and high resolution. That research is extended here by (1) developing and applying a methodology to compare the performance of two or more algorithms against this problem, and (2) analyzing the effects of using reduced data sets in those searches. Computational experiments are presented in which the performance of five multi-objective search algorithms are compared to one another using four binary comparison methods, each quantifying the relationship between two solution sets in different ways. Relative rankings reveal strengths and weaknesses of evaluated algorithms empowering researchers to select the best algorithm for their specific needs. The use of reduced data sets is shown to be useful for producing relative rankings of algorithms that are representative of rankings produced using the full set

    Incorporating user preferences in multi-objective feature selection in software product lines using multi-criteria decision analysis

    Software Product Lines Engineering has created various tools that assist with the standardisation in the design and implementation of clusters of equivalent software systems with an explicit representation of variability choices in the form of Feature Models, making the selection of the most ideal software product a Feature Selection problem. With the increase in the number of properties, the problem needs to be defined as a multi-objective optimisation where objectives are considered independently one from another with the goal of finding and providing decision-makers a large and diverse set of non-dominated solutions/products. Following the optimisation, decision-makers define their own (often complex) preferences on how does the ideal software product look like. Then, they select the unique solution that matches their preferences the most and discard the rest of the solutionsā€”sometimes with the help of some Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis technique. In this work, we study the usability and the performance of incorporating preferences of decision-makers by carrying-out Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis directly within the multi-objective optimisation to increase the chances of finding more solutions that match preferences of the decision-makers the most and avoid wasting execution time searching for non-dominated solutions that are poor with respect to decision-makersā€™ preferences

    Hierarchical clustering-based framework for a posteriori exploration of Pareto fronts: application on the bi-objective next release problem

    IntroductionWhen solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems using a search algorithm without a priori information, the result is a Pareto front. Selecting a solution from it is a laborious task if the number of solutions to be analyzed is large. This task would benefit from a systematic approach that facilitates the analysis, comparison and selection of a solution or a group of solutions based on the preferences of the decision makers. In the last decade, the research and development of algorithms for solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems has been growing steadily. In contrast, efforts in the a posteriori exploration of non-dominated solutions are still scarce.MethodsThis paper proposes an abstract framework based on hierarchical clustering in order to facilitate decision makers to explore such a Pareto front in search of a solution or a group of solutions according to their preferences. An extension of that abstract framework aimed at addressing the bi-objective Next Release Problem is presented, together with a Dashboard that implements that extension. Based on this implementation, two studies are conducted. The first is a usability study performed with a small group of experts. The second is a performance analysis based on computation time consumed by the clustering algorithm.ResultsThe results of the initial empirical usability study are promising and indicate directions for future improvements. The experts were able to correctly use the dashboard and properly interpret the visualizations in a very short time. In the same direction, the results of the performance comparison highlight the advantage of the hierarchical clustering-based approach in terms of response time.DiscussionBased on these excellent results, the extension of the framework to new problems is planned, as well as the implementation of new validity tests with expert decision makers using real-world data

    The Multiobjective Average Network Flow Problem: Formulations, Algorithms, Heuristics, and Complexity

    Integrating value focused thinking with the shortest path problem results in a unique formulation called the multiobjective average shortest path problem. We prove this is NP-complete for general graphs. For directed acyclic graphs, an efficient algorithm and even faster heuristic are proposed. While the worst case error of the heuristic is proven unbounded, its average performance on random graphs is within 3% of the optimal solution. Additionally, a special case of the more general biobjective average shortest path problem is given, allowing tradeoffs between decreases in arc set cardinality and increases in multiobjective value; the algorithm to solve the average shortest path problem provides all the information needed to solve this more difficult biobjective problem. These concepts are then extended to the minimum cost flow problem creating a new formulation we name the multiobjective average minimum cost flow. This problem is proven NP-complete as well. For directed acyclic graphs, two efficient heuristics are developed, and although we prove the error of any successive average shortest path heuristic is in theory unbounded, they both perform very well on random graphs. Furthermore, we define a general biobjective average minimum cost flow problem. The information from the heuristics can be used to estimate the efficient frontier in a special case of this problem trading off total flow and multiobjective value. Finally, several variants of these two problems are discussed. Proofs are conjectured showing the conditions under which the problems are solvable in polynomial time and when they remain NP-complete

    Domain-driven multiple-criteria decision-making for flight crew decision support tool

    During the flight, the crew might consider modifying their planned trajectory, taking into account currently available information, such as an updated weather forecast report or the already accrued amount of delay. This modified planned trajectory translates into changes on expected fuel and flying time, which will impact the airlineā€™s relevant performance indicators leading to a complex multiple-criteria decision-making problem. Pilot3, a project from the Clean Sky Joint Undertaking 2 under European Unionā€™s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, aims to develop an objective optimisation engine to assist the crew on this process. This article presents a domain-driven approach for the selection of the most suitable multiple-criteria decision-making methods to be used for this optimisation framework. The most relevant performance indicators, based on airlineā€™s objectives and policies, are identified as: meeting on-time performance, leading to a binary value in a deterministic scenario; and total cost, which can be disaggregated into sub-cost components. The optimisation process consists of two phases: first, Pareto optimal solutions are generated with a multi-objective optimisation method (lexicographic ordering); second, alternative trajectories are filtered and ranked using a combination of multi-criteria decision analysis methods (analytic hierarchy process and VIKOR). A realistic example of use shows the applicability of the process and studies the sensibility of the optimisation framework
