Connecting the Dots: Linking Sustainable Wild Capture Fisheries Initiatives and Impact Investors
Wilderness Markets undertook a series of fishery value chain assessments to better understand the opportunities and constraints for private impact capital to flow into wild capture fisheries markets. Given the investments in developing sustainable fisheries pilots, Wilderness Markets expected to identify a range of investment opportunities in each of the fisheries assessed. However, they did not find investment opportunities that could address the suite of challenges associated with improving financial and social outcomes, while also contributing to conservation outcomes, particularly in developing country fisheries. Wilderness Markets' research indicates the lack of triple-bottom line (TBL) investment opportunities is due to six main constraints to an economically sustainable fisheries value chain—data, management, market differentiation, infrastructure, finance and the lack of investable entities

Sustainable product development strategies: Business planning and performance implications

The final published article is available from the link below.Manufacturing firms are under many financial and competitive pressures which focus attention on the performance of their manufacturing processes. In this paper the opportunities for improving the environmental impact of products within the constraints of existing manufacturing infrastructure are examined. Approaches which support sustainability in two aspects are proposed, firstly, the provision of products to the users in ways which extend the product life and secondly, manufacturing approaches which reduce resource usage. This paper outlines three different sustainable development strategies for different product types and describes the cost implications for manufacturers across the life-cycle. The performance measures affected by these strategies are examined drawing on product development case studies from a number of high technology sectors to highlight the different approaches taken. The results are intended to aid manufacturers during the earliest stages of business planning to consider alternative product development approaches which are more sustainable

Determining Utility System Value of Demand Flexibility From Grid-interactive Efficient Buildings
This report focuses on ways current methods and practices that establish the value to electric utility systems of distributed energy resource (DER) investments can be enhanced to determine the value of demand flexibility in grid-interactive efficient buildings that can provide grid services. The report introduces key valuation concepts that are applicable to demand flexibility that these buildings can provide and links to other documents that describe these concepts and their implementation in more detail.The scope of this report is limited to the valuation of economic benefits to the utility system. These are the foundational values on which other benefits (and costs) can be built. Establishing the economic value to the grid of demand flexibility provides the information needed to design programs, market rules, and rates that align the economic interest of utility customers with building owners and occupants. By nature, DERs directly impact customers and provide societal benefits external to the utility system. Jurisdictions can use utility system benefits and costs as the foundation of their economic analysis but align their primary cost-effectiveness metric with all applicable policy objectives, which may include customer and societal (non-utility system) impacts.This report suggests enhancements to current methods and practices that state and local policymakers, public utility commissions, state energy offices, utilities, state utility consumer representatives, and other stakeholders might support. These enhancements can improve the consistency and robustness of economic valuation of demand flexibility for grid services. The report concludes with a discussion of considerations for prioritizing implementation of these improvements
Carbon Free Boston: Social equity report 2019
OVERVIEW:
In January 2019, the Boston Green Ribbon Commission released its Carbon Free Boston: Summary Report, identifying potential
options for the City of Boston to meet its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. The report found that reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 requires three mutually-reinforcing strategies in key sectors: 1) deepen energy efficiency while reducing energy
demand, 2) electrify activity to the fullest practical extent, and 3) use fuels and electricity that are 100 percent free of greenhouse gases (GHGs). The Summary Report detailed the ways in which these technical strategies will transform Boston’s physical
infrastructure, including its buildings, energy supply, transportation, and waste management systems. The Summary Report also
highlighted that it is how these strategies are designed and implemented that matter most in ensuring an effective and equitable transition to carbon neutrality.
Equity concerns exist for every option the City has to reduce GHG emissions. The services provided by each sector are not
experienced equally across Boston’s communities. Low-income families and families of color are more likely to live in residences that are in poor physical condition, leading to high utility bills, unsafe and unhealthy indoor environments, and high GHG
emissions.1
Those same families face greater exposure to harmful outdoor air pollution compared to others. The access and
reliability of public transportation is disproportionately worse in neighborhoods with large populations of people of color, and
large swaths of vulnerable neighborhoods, from East Boston to Mattapan, do not have ready access to the city’s bike network.
Income inequality is a growing national issue and is particularly acute in Boston, which consistently ranks among the highest US
cities in regards to income disparities. With the release of Imagine Boston 2030, Mayor Walsh committed to make Boston more
equitable, affordable, connected, and resilient. The Summary Report outlined the broad strokes of how action to reach carbon
neutrality intersects with equity. A just transition to carbon neutrality improves environmental quality for all Bostonians, prioritizes socially vulnerable populations, seeks to redress current and past injustice, and creates economic and social opportunities
for all.
This Carbon Free Boston: Social Equity Report provides a deeper equity context for Carbon Free Boston as a whole, and for
each strategy area, by demonstrating how inequitable and unjust the playing field is for socially vulnerable Bostonians and why
equity must be integrated into policy design and implementation. This report summarizes the current landscape of climate
action work for each strategy area and evaluates how it currently impacts inequity. Finally, this report provides guidance to the
City and partners on how to do better; it lays out the attributes of an equitable approach to carbon neutrality, framed around
three guiding principles: 1) plan carefully to avoid unintended consequences, 2) be intentional in design through a clear equity
lens, and 3) practice inclusivity from start to finish
The 2nd Generation VLTI path to performance
The upgrade of the VLTI infrastructure for the 2nd generation instruments is
now complete with the transformation of the laboratory, and installation of
star separators on both the 1.8-m Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) and the 8-m Unit
Telescopes (UTs). The Gravity fringe tracker has had a full semester of
commissioning on the ATs, and a first look at the UTs. The CIAO infrared
wavefront sensor is about to demonstrate its performance relative to the
visible wavefront sensor MACAO. First astrometric measurements on the ATs and
astrometric qualification of the UTs are on-going. Now is a good time to
revisit the performance roadmap for VLTI that was initiated in 2014, which
aimed at coherently driving the developments of the interferometer, and
especially its performance, in support to the new generation of instruments:
