    Optimal distribution network reconfiguration using meta-heuristic algorithms

    Finding optimal configuration of power distribution systems topology is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. It becomes more complex when time varying nature of loads in large-scale distribution systems is taken into account. In the second chapter of this dissertation, a systematic approach is proposed to tackle the computational burden of the procedure. To solve the optimization problem, a novel adaptive fuzzy based parallel genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed that employs the concept of parallel computing in identifying the optimal configuration of the network. The integration of fuzzy logic into GA enhances the efficiency of the parallel GA by adaptively modifying the migration rates between different processors during the optimization process. A computationally efficient graph encoding method based on Dandelion coding strategy is developed which automatically generates radial topologies and prevents the construction of infeasible radial networks during the optimization process. The main shortcoming of the proposed algorithm in Chapter 2 is that it identifies only one single solution. It means that the system operator will not have any option but relying on the found solution. That is why a novel hybrid optimization algorithm is proposed in the third chapter of this dissertation that determines Pareto frontiers, as candidate solutions, for multi-objective distribution network reconfiguration problem. Implementing this model, the system operator will have more flexibility in choosing the best configuration among the alternative solutions. The proposed hybrid optimization algorithm combines the concept of fuzzy Pareto dominance (FPD) with shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA) to recognize non-dominated suboptimal solutions identified by SFLA. The local search step of SFLA is also customized for power systems applications so that it automatically creates and analyzes only the feasible and radial configurations in its optimization procedure which significantly increases the convergence speed of the algorithm. In the fourth chapter, the problem of optimal network reconfiguration is solved for the case in which the system operator is going to employ an optimization algorithm that is automatically modifying its parameters during the optimization process. Defining three fuzzy functions, the probability of crossover and mutation will be adaptively tuned as the algorithm proceeds and the premature convergence will be avoided while the convergence speed of identifying the optimal configuration will not decrease. This modified genetic algorithm is considered a step towards making the parallel GA, presented in the second chapter of this dissertation, more robust in avoiding from getting stuck in local optimums. In the fifth chapter, the concentration will be on finding a potential smart grid solution to more high-quality suboptimal configurations of distribution networks. This chapter is considered an improvement for the third chapter of this dissertation for two reasons: (1) A fuzzy logic is used in the partitioning step of SFLA to improve the proposed optimization algorithm and to yield more accurate classification of frogs. (2) The problem of system reconfiguration is solved considering the presence of distributed generation (DG) units in the network. In order to study the new paradigm of integrating smart grids into power systems, it will be analyzed how the quality of suboptimal solutions can be affected when DG units are continuously added to the distribution network. The heuristic optimization algorithm which is proposed in Chapter 3 and is improved in Chapter 5 is implemented on a smaller case study in Chapter 6 to demonstrate that the identified solution through the optimization process is the same with the optimal solution found by an exhaustive search

    Optimisation of piping network design for district cooling system

    A district cooling system (DeS) is a.scheme for centralised cooling energy distribution which takes advantage of economies of scale and load diversity. . A cooling medium (chilled water) is generated at a central refrigeration plant and then supplied to a district area, comprising multiple buildings, through a closed-loop piping circuit. Because of the substantial capital investment involved, an optimal design of the distribution piping . configuration is one of the crucial factors for successful implementation of a district 1'. cooling scheme. Since there. exists an enormous number of different combinations of the piping configuration, it is not feasible to evaluate each individual case using an exhaustive approach. This thesis exammes the problem of determining an optimal distribution piping configuration using a genetic algorithm (GA). In order to estimate the spatial and temporal distribution of cooling loads; the climatic conditions of Hong Kong were investigated and a weather database in the form of a typical meteorological year (TMY) was developed. Detailed thermal modelling of a number of prototypical buildings was carried out to determine benchmark cooling loads. A novel Local Search/Looped Local Search algorithm was developed for finding optimal/near-optimal distribution piping configurations. By means of computational . experiments, it was demonstrated that there is a promising improvement to GA performance by including the Local Search/Looped Local Search algorithm, in terms of both solution quality and computational efficiency. The effects on the search performance of a number of parameters were systematically investigated to establish the most effective settings. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the Local Search/Looped Local Search algorithm, a benchmark problem - the optimal communication,spanning tree (OCST) was used for comparison.     TSP and its variants : use of solvable cases in heuristics

    This thesis proposes heuristics motivated by solvable cases for the travelling salesman problem (TSP) and the cumulative travelling salesman path problem (CTSPP). The solvable cases are investigated in three aspects: specially structured matrices, special neighbourhoods and small-size problems. This thesis demonstrates how to use solvable cases in heuristics for the TSP and the CTSPP and presents their promising performance in theoretical research and empirical research. Firstly, we prove that the three classical heuristics, nearest neighbour, double-ended nearest neighbour and GREEDY, have the theoretical property of obtaining the permutation for permuted strong anti-Robinson matrices for the TSP such that the renumbered matrices satisfy the anti-Robinson conditions. Inspired by specially structured matrices, we propose Kalmanson heuristics, which not only have the theoretical property of solving permuted strong Kalmanson matrices to optimality for the TSP, but also outperform their classical counterparts for general cases. Secondly, we propose three heuristics for the CTSPP. The pyramidal heuristic is motivated by the special pyramidal neighbourhood. The chains heuristic and the sliding window heuristic are motivated by solvable small-size problems. The experiments suggest the proposed heuristics outperform the classical GRASP-2-opt on general cases for the CTSPP. Thirdly, we conduct both theoretical and empirical research on specially structured cases for the CTSPP. Theoretically, we prove the solvability of Line- CTSPP on more general cases and the time complexity of the CTSPP on SUM matrices. We also conjecture that the CTSPP on two rays is NP-hard. Empirically, we propose three heuristics, which perform well on specially structured cases. The Line heuristic, based on Line-CTSPP, performs better than GRASP-2-opt when nodes are distributed on two close parallel lines. The Up-Down heuristic is inspired by the Up-Down structure in solvable Path TSP and outperforms GRASP-2-opt in convex-hull cases and close-to-convex-hull cases. The Two-Ray heuristic combines the path structures in the first two heuristics and obtains high-quality solutions when nodes are along two rays

    Quantitative automated analysis of host-pathogen interactions

    This work aims to broaden knowledge about neutrophil biology in their interaction with fungi species that most frequently cause invasive fungal diseases (IFD). The questions addressed include the alteration of neutrophil morphology after interaction with Candida albicans or C. glabrata, revealing factors that modulate the production and composition of neutrophil-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) obtained in confrontation assay with conidia of Aspergillus fumigatus and analysing EVs activity against this fungus. Alongside fundamental interests, those questions have important applied aspects in the medicine of IFD. In particular, for diagnostic purposes and infection process monitoring. The results of this work include: 1 a novel segmentation and tracking algorithm which is capable of working with low-contrast cell images, producing accurate cell contours and providing data about positions of clusters, which would improve further analysis; 2 a novel workflow algorithm for analysis of neutrophil continuous morphological spectrum without consensus-based manual annotation; 3 quantitative evidence that morphodynamics of isolated neutrophils depends on the infectious agent (C. albicans or C. glabrata) used in whole blood infection assay; 4 quantitative evidence that neutrophil-derived extracellular vesicles, obtained in confrontation assays with conidia of A. fumigatus could inhibit hyphae development and damage hyphae cell wall; 5 quantitative evidence that EVs inhibition activity is strain-specific
