    A dynamics-driven approach to precision machines design for micro-manufacturing and its implementation perspectives

    Precision machines are essential elements in fabricating high quality micro products or micro features and directly affect the machining accuracy, repeatability and efficiency. There are a number of literatures on the design of industrial machine elements and a couple of precision machines commercially available. However, few researchers have systematically addressed the design of precision machines from the dynamics point of view. In this paper, the design issues of precision machines are presented with particular emphasis on the dynamics aspects as the major factors affecting the performance of the precision machines and machining processes. This paper begins with a brief review of the design principles of precision machines with emphasis on machining dynamics. Then design processes of precision machines are discussed, and followed by a practical modelling and simulation approaches. Two case studies are provided including the design and analysis of a fast tool servo system and a 5-axis bench-top micro-milling machine respectively.     2D Reconstruction of Small Intestine's Interior Wall

    Examining and interpreting of a large number of wireless endoscopic images from the gastrointestinal tract is a tiresome task for physicians. A practical solution is to automatically construct a two dimensional representation of the gastrointestinal tract for easy inspection. However, little has been done on wireless endoscopic image stitching, let alone systematic investigation. The proposed new wireless endoscopic image stitching method consists of two main steps to improve the accuracy and efficiency of image registration. First, the keypoints are extracted by Principle Component Analysis and Scale Invariant Feature Transform (PCA-SIFT) algorithm and refined with Maximum Likelihood Estimation SAmple Consensus (MLESAC) outlier removal to find the most reliable keypoints. Second, the optimal transformation parameters obtained from first step are fed to the Normalised Mutual Information (NMI) algorithm as an initial solution. With modified Marquardt-Levenberg search strategy in a multiscale framework, the NMI can find the optimal transformation parameters in the shortest time. The proposed methodology has been tested on two different datasets - one with real wireless endoscopic images and another with images obtained from Micro-Ball (a new wireless cubic endoscopy system with six image sensors). The results have demonstrated the accuracy and robustness of the proposed methodology both visually and quantitatively.Comment: Journal draf

    Implementation of explosion safety regulations in design of a mobile robot for coal mines

    The article focuses on specific challenges of the design of a reconnaissance mobile robotic system aimed for inspection in underground coal mine areas after a catastrophic event. Systems that are designated for these conditions must meet specific standards and regulations. In this paper is discussed primarily the main conception of meeting explosion safety regulations of European Union 2014/34/EU (also called ATEX-from French "Appareils destines a etre utilises en ATmospheres Explosives") for Group I (equipment intended for use in underground mines) and Category M1 (equipment designed for operation in the presence of an explosive atmosphere). An example of a practical solution is described on main subsystems of the mobile robot TeleRescuera teleoperated robot with autonomy functions, a sensory subsystem with multiple cameras, three-dimensional (3D) mapping and sensors for measurement of gas concentration, airflow, relative humidity, and temperatures. Explosion safety is ensured according to the Technical Report CLC/TR 60079-33 "s" by two main independent protections-mechanical protection (flameproof enclosure) and electrical protection (automatic methane detector that disconnects power when methane breaches the enclosure and gets inside the robot body).Web of Science811art. no. 230

    Beam-Induced Damage Mechanisms and their Calculation

    The rapid interaction of highly energetic particle beams with matter induces dynamic responses in the impacted component. If the beam pulse is sufficiently intense, extreme conditions can be reached, such as very high pressures, changes of material density, phase transitions, intense stress waves, material fragmentation and explosions. Even at lower intensities and longer time-scales, significant effects may be induced, such as vibrations, large oscillations, and permanent deformation of the impacted components. These lectures provide an introduction to the mechanisms that govern the thermomechanical phenomena induced by the interaction between particle beams and solids and to the analytical and numerical methods that are available for assessing the response of impacted components.     Manifested flatness predictions in thin strip cold rolling

    International audienceThe paper deals with flatness defects prediction in thin plates which appear during rolling. Their origin is the roll stack thermo-elastic deformation. The combination of the elastic deflection, the thermal crown and the roll grinding crown results in a non-parallel bite. If the transverse roll profile is not an affinity of the incoming strip profile, differential elongation results and induces high stresses in the outgoing strip. The latter combine with the imposed strip tension force, resulting in a net post-bite stress field which may be sufficiently compressive locally to promote buckling. A variety of non-developable shapes may result, generally occurring as waviness, and classified as flatness defects (center waves, wavy edges, quarterbuckles...). The purpose of the present paper is to present a coupled approach, following [1]: a simple buckling criterion is introduced in the FEM model of strip and roll deformation, LAM3/TEC3 [2]. The post-bite stress field is in much better agreement with experiments if this treatment is used, as will be demonstrated

    Discrete Event Simulation and Optimization Approaches for the Predictive Maintenance of Railway Infrastructure

    This thesis is carried out within the PhD Course in Logistics and Transport at CIELI - Italian Centre of Excellence on Logistics, Transport and Infrastructures, University of Genoa. In this work, a discrete event simulation and optimization model is created to schedule the predictive maintenance activities. Nowadays, after a severe decrease of transport demand during the pandemic period, rail public transport is resuming a central role for both freight and passenger transport. To cope with this increase in demand, to maintain high safety standards and to avoid unnecessary costs, the idea is to switch to predictive maintenance strategy, intervening before an asset failure and when it has reached a certain state of degradation. The degradation and asset future conditions are predicted according to probabilistic models and maintenance deadlines are defined by applying a risk based approach. The problem is first formulated as a MILP (Mixed Integer Linear Programming) optimization problem and then transformed into a simulation-based optimization problem using the ExtendSim software. Different simulative models are created to take into account the stochastic nature of some variables in real processes. After the formal description of the models, some real-world applications are presented. Finally, considerations on the proposed approach are reported highlighting limits and challenges in predictive maintenance planning, such as lack of data and the stochastic and complex environment
