EYES : a novel overtaking assistance system for vehicular networks
Developments in the ITS area are received with great expectation by both consumers and industry. Despite their huge potential benefits, ITS solutions suffer from the slow pace of adoption by manufacturers. In this paper we propose EYES, an ITS system that aims at helping drivers in overtaking. The system autonomously creates a network of the devices running EYES, and provides drivers with a video feed from the vehicle located just ahead, thus presenting a better view of any vehicles coming from the opposite direction and the road ahead. This is specially useful when the front view of the driver is blocked by large vehicles, and thus the decision whether to overtake can be taken based on the visuals provided by the application. We have validated EYES, the proposed overtaking assistance system, in both indoor and realistic scenarios involving vehicular network, and preliminary results allow being optimistic about its effectiveness and applicability
Evaluation of HTTP/DASH Adaptation Algorithms on Vehicular Networks
Video streaming currently accounts for the majority of Internet traffic. One
factor that enables video streaming is HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS), that
allows the users to stream video using a bit rate that closely matches the
available bandwidth from the server to the client. MPEG Dynamic Adaptive
Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is a widely used standard, that allows the clients
to select the resolution to download based on their own estimations. The
algorithm for determining the next segment in a DASH stream is not partof the
standard, but it is an important factor in the resulting playback quality.
Nowadays vehicles are increasingly equipped with mobile communication devices,
and in-vehicle multimedia entertainment systems. In this paper, we evaluate the
performance of various DASH adaptation algorithms over a vehicular network. We
present detailed simulation results highlighting the advantages and
disadvantages of various adaptation algorithms in delivering video content to
vehicular users, and we show how the different adaptation algorithms perform in
terms of throughput, playback interruption time, and number of interruptions
Self-Sustaining Caching Stations: Towards Cost-Effective 5G-Enabled Vehicular Networks
In this article, we investigate the cost-effective 5G-enabled vehicular
networks to support emerging vehicular applications, such as autonomous
driving, in-car infotainment and location-based road services. To this end,
self-sustaining caching stations (SCSs) are introduced to liberate on-road base
stations from the constraints of power lines and wired backhauls. Specifically,
the cache-enabled SCSs are powered by renewable energy and connected to core
networks through wireless backhauls, which can realize "drop-and-play"
deployment, green operation, and low-latency services. With SCSs integrated, a
5G-enabled heterogeneous vehicular networking architecture is further proposed,
where SCSs are deployed along roadside for traffic offloading while
conventional macro base stations (MBSs) provide ubiquitous coverage to
vehicles. In addition, a hierarchical network management framework is designed
to deal with high dynamics in vehicular traffic and renewable energy, where
content caching, energy management and traffic steering are jointly
investigated to optimize the service capability of SCSs with balanced power
demand and supply in different time scales. Case studies are provided to
illustrate SCS deployment and operation designs, and some open research issues
