    On Defining SPARQL with Boolean Tensor Algebra

    The Resource Description Framework (RDF) represents information as subject-predicate-object triples. These triples are commonly interpreted as a directed labelled graph. We propose an alternative approach, interpreting the data as a 3-way Boolean tensor. We show how SPARQL queries - the standard queries for RDF - can be expressed as elementary operations in Boolean algebra, giving us a complete re-interpretation of RDF and SPARQL. We show how the Boolean tensor interpretation allows for new optimizations and analyses of the complexity of SPARQL queries. For example, estimating the size of the results for different join queries becomes much simpler

    ASCR/HEP Exascale Requirements Review Report

    This draft report summarizes and details the findings, results, and recommendations derived from the ASCR/HEP Exascale Requirements Review meeting held in June, 2015. The main conclusions are as follows. 1) Larger, more capable computing and data facilities are needed to support HEP science goals in all three frontiers: Energy, Intensity, and Cosmic. The expected scale of the demand at the 2025 timescale is at least two orders of magnitude -- and in some cases greater -- than that available currently. 2) The growth rate of data produced by simulations is overwhelming the current ability, of both facilities and researchers, to store and analyze it. Additional resources and new techniques for data analysis are urgently needed. 3) Data rates and volumes from HEP experimental facilities are also straining the ability to store and analyze large and complex data volumes. Appropriately configured leadership-class facilities can play a transformational role in enabling scientific discovery from these datasets. 4) A close integration of HPC simulation and data analysis will aid greatly in interpreting results from HEP experiments. Such an integration will minimize data movement and facilitate interdependent workflows. 5) Long-range planning between HEP and ASCR will be required to meet HEP's research needs. To best use ASCR HPC resources the experimental HEP program needs a) an established long-term plan for access to ASCR computational and data resources, b) an ability to map workflows onto HPC resources, c) the ability for ASCR facilities to accommodate workflows run by collaborations that can have thousands of individual members, d) to transition codes to the next-generation HPC platforms that will be available at ASCR facilities, e) to build up and train a workforce capable of developing and using simulations and analysis to support HEP scientific research on next-generation systems.Comment: 77 pages, 13 Figures; draft report, subject to further revisio

    A data exchange system in e-manufacturing.

    The emergence of the Internet has fundamentally changed the way that people communicate and view the world. As a new manufacturing paradigm, e-Manufacturing is about using the web-enabled and tether-free infotronic technologies for manufacturing operations. Although e-Manufacturing has already been an often-mentioned topic, in the past decade, practical implementation has been slow to develop due to insufficient technologies to handle information flows connected with e-Manufacturing. Recently, there is considerable interest in the area of Internet enabled distributed systems. Examples of these works include online part measurement [Grimaldi, 1998] and Distributed Rapid Prototyping Via the Internet [Tay, 1999]. The research target of these works focus on remote manufacturing control and monitoring via the Internet. However, data exchange, an important part for global co-operation, hasn\u27t been fully studied and there is not a lot of work that has been done in previous research. In this thesis, efforts have been made to highlight the role of data exchange in Internet-enabled manufacturing, and, an Internet-based Data Exchange System has been developed with JSP and Oracle database. The developed system has advantage in commonality and capability of data-transaction over the previous work. As an interesting complement to the study of previous researches, a novel methodology is also proposed for utilization of remote resource via the Internet, using commercial software \u27PC Remote Access\u27. The implementation of this methodology has successfully been done to use software including AutoCAD, MasterCAM and Catalyst over the Internet. The biggest problem for the application of this approach lies in the fact that \u27PC remote Access\u27 software cannot make one PC get access to another PC which is behind a firewall.     Tensor-on-tensor regression

    We propose a framework for the linear prediction of a multi-way array (i.e., a tensor) from another multi-way array of arbitrary dimension, using the contracted tensor product. This framework generalizes several existing approaches, including methods to predict a scalar outcome from a tensor, a matrix from a matrix, or a tensor from a scalar. We describe an approach that exploits the multiway structure of both the predictors and the outcomes by restricting the coefficients to have reduced CP-rank. We propose a general and efficient algorithm for penalized least-squares estimation, which allows for a ridge (L_2) penalty on the coefficients. The objective is shown to give the mode of a Bayesian posterior, which motivates a Gibbs sampling algorithm for inference. We illustrate the approach with an application to facial image data.     Survey on Additive Manufacturing, Cloud 3D Printing and Services

    Cloud Manufacturing (CM) is the concept of using manufacturing resources in a service oriented way over the Internet. Recent developments in Additive Manufacturing (AM) are making it possible to utilise resources ad-hoc as replacement for traditional manufacturing resources in case of spontaneous problems in the established manufacturing processes. In order to be of use in these scenarios the AM resources must adhere to a strict principle of transparency and service composition in adherence to the Cloud Computing (CC) paradigm. With this review we provide an overview over CM, AM and relevant domains as well as present the historical development of scientific research in these fields, starting from 2002. Part of this work is also a meta-review on the domain to further detail its development and structure

    Shared Arrangements: practical inter-query sharing for streaming dataflows

    Current systems for data-parallel, incremental processing and view maintenance over high-rate streams isolate the execution of independent queries. This creates unwanted redundancy and overhead in the presence of concurrent incrementally maintained queries: each query must independently maintain the same indexed state over the same input streams, and new queries must build this state from scratch before they can begin to emit their first results. This paper introduces shared arrangements: indexed views of maintained state that allow concurrent queries to reuse the same in-memory state without compromising data-parallel performance and scaling. We implement shared arrangements in a modern stream processor and show order-of-magnitude improvements in query response time and resource consumption for interactive queries against high-throughput streams, while also significantly improving performance in other domains including business analytics, graph processing, and program analysis
