Towards a Scalable Hardware/Software Co-Design Platform for Real-time Pedestrian Tracking Based on a ZYNQ-7000 Device
Currently, most designers face a daunting task to
research different design flows and learn the intricacies of
specific software from various manufacturers in
hardware/software co-design. An urgent need of creating a
scalable hardware/software co-design platform has become a key
strategic element for developing hardware/software integrated
systems. In this paper, we propose a new design flow for building
a scalable co-design platform on FPGA-based system-on-chip.
We employ an integrated approach to implement a histogram
oriented gradients (HOG) and a support vector machine (SVM)
classification on a programmable device for pedestrian tracking.
Not only was hardware resource analysis reported, but the
precision and success rates of pedestrian tracking on nine open
access image data sets are also analysed. Finally, our proposed
design flow can be used for any real-time image processingrelated
products on programmable ZYNQ-based embedded
systems, which benefits from a reduced design time and provide a
scalable solution for embedded image processing products
MIPv6 Experimental Evaluation using Overlay Networks
The commercial deployment of Mobile IPv6 has been hastened by the concepts of Integrated
Wireless Networks and Overlay Networks, which are present in the notion of the
forthcoming generation of wireless communications. Individual wireless access networks
show limitations that can be overcome through the integration of different technologies
into a single unified platform (i.e., 4G systems). This paper summarises practical experiments
performed to evaluate the impact of inter-networking (i.e. vertical handovers) on
the Network and Transport layers. Based on our observations, we propose and evaluate a
number of inter-technology handover optimisation techniques, e.g., Router Advertisements
frequency values, Binding Update simulcasting, Router Advertisement caching, and Soft
Handovers. The paper concludes with the description of a policy-based mobility support
middleware (PROTON) that hides 4G networking complexities from mobile users, provides
informed handover-related decisions, and enables the application of different vertical
handover methods and optimisations according to context.Publicad
A collaborative platform for integrating and optimising Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis requests
A Virtual Integration Platform (VIP) is described which provides support for the integration of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools into an environment that supports the use of these tools in a distributed collaborative manner. The VIP has evolved through previous EU research conducted within the VRShips-ROPAX 2000 (VRShips) project and the current version discussed here was developed predominantly within the VIRTUE project but also within the SAFEDOR project. The VIP is described with respect to the support it provides to designers and analysts in coordinating and optimising CFD analysis requests. Two case studies are provided that illustrate the application of the VIP within HSVA: the use of a panel code for the evaluation of geometry variations in order to improve propeller efficiency; and, the use of a dedicated maritime RANS code (FreSCo) to improve the wake distribution for the VIRTUE tanker. A discussion is included detailing the background, application and results from the use of the VIP within these two case studies as well as how the platform was of benefit during the development and a consideration of how it can benefit HSVA in the future
Efficient Reorganisation of Hybrid Index Structures Supporting Multimedia Search Criteria
This thesis describes the development and setup of hybrid index structures. They are access methods for retrieval techniques in hybrid data spaces which are formed by one or more relational or normalised columns in conjunction with one non-relational or non-normalised column. Examples for these hybrid data spaces are, among others, textual data combined with geographical ones or data from enterprise content management systems. However, all non-relational data types may be stored as well as image feature vectors or comparable types.
Hybrid index structures are known to function efficiently regarding retrieval operations. Unfortunately, little information is available about reorganisation operations which insert or update the row tuples. The fundamental research is mainly executed in simulation based environments. This work is written ensuing from a previous thesis that implements hybrid access structures in realistic database surroundings. During this implementation it has become obvious that retrieval works efficiently. Yet, the restructuring approaches require too much effort to be set up, e.g., in web search engine environments where several thousands of documents are inserted or modified every day. These search engines rely on relational database systems as storage backends. Hence, the setup of these access methods for hybrid data spaces is required in real world database management systems.
This thesis tries to apply a systematic approach for the optimisation of the rearrangement algorithms inside realistic scenarios. Thus, a measurement and evaluation scheme is created which is repeatedly deployed to an evolving state and a model of hybrid index structures in order to optimise the regrouping algorithms to make a setup of hybrid index structures in real world information systems possible. Thus, a set of input corpora is selected which is applied to the test suite as well as an evaluation scheme.
To sum up, it can be said that this thesis describes input sets, a test suite including an evaluation scheme as well as optimisation iterations on reorganisation algorithms reflecting a theoretical model framework to provide efficient reorganisations of hybrid index structures supporting multimedia search criteria
Mobile IP: state of the art report
Due to roaming, a mobile device may change its network attachment each time it moves to a new link. This might cause a disruption for the Internet data packets that have to reach the mobile node. Mobile IP is a protocol, developed by the Mobile IP Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) working group, that is able to inform the network about this change in network attachment such that the Internet data packets will be delivered in a seamless way to the new point of attachment. This document presents current developments and research activities in the Mobile IP area

Hardware Acceleration of Network Intrusion Detection System Using FPGA
This thesis presents new algorithms and hardware designs for Signature-based Network Intrusion Detection System (SB-NIDS) optimisation exploiting a hybrid hardwaresoftware co-designed embedded processing platform. The work describe concentrates
on optimisation of a complete SB-NIDS Snort application software on a FPGA based
hardware-software target rather than on the implementation of a single functional unit
for hardware acceleration. Pattern Matching Hardware Accelerator (PMHA) based on
Bloom filter was designed to optimise SB-NIDS performance for execution on a Xilinx
MicroBlaze soft-core processor. The Bloom filter approach enables the potentially large
number of network intrusion attack patterns to be efficiently represented and searched
primarily using accesses to FPGA on-chip memory. The thesis demonstrates, the viability of hybrid hardware-software co-designed approach for SB-NIDS. Future work is
required to investigate the effects of later generation FPGA technology and multi-core
processors in order to clearly prove the benefits over conventional processor platforms
for SB-NIDS.
The strengths and weaknesses of the hardware accelerators and algorithms are analysed,
and experimental results are examined to determine the effectiveness of the implementation. Experimental results confirm that the PMHA is capable of performing network
packet analysis for gigabit rate network traffic. Experimental test results indicate that
our SB-NIDS prototype implementation on relatively low clock rate embedded processing platform performance is approximately 1.7 times better than Snort executing on
a general purpose processor on PC when comparing processor cycles rather than wall
clock time

Self-organising network management for heterogeneous LTE-advanced networks
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonSince 2004, when the Long Term Evolution (LTE) was first proposed to be publicly available in the year 2009, a plethora of new characteristics, techniques and applications have been constantly enhancing it since its first release, over the past decade. As a result, the research aims for LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) have been released to create a ubiquitous and supportive network for mobile users. The incorporation of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) has been proposed as one of the main enhancements of LTE-A systems over the existing LTE releases, by proposing the deployment of small-cell applications, such as femtocells, to provide more coverage and quality of service (QoS) within the network, whilst also reducing capital expenditure. These principal advantages can be obtained at the cost of new challenges such as inter-cell interference, which occurs when different network applications share the same frequency channel in the network. In this thesis, the main challenges of HetNets in LTE-A platform have been addressed and novel solutions are proposed by using self-organising network (SON) management approaches, which allows the cooperative cellular systems to observe, decide and amend their ongoing operation based on network conditions. The novel SON algorithms are modelled and simulated in OPNET modeler simulation software for the three processes of resource allocation, mobility management and interference coordination in multi-tier macro-femto networks. Different channel allocation methods based on cooperative transmission, frequency reuse and dynamic spectrum access are investigated and a novel SON sub-channel allocation method is proposed based on hybrid fractional frequency reuse (HFFR) scheme to provide dynamic resource allocation between macrocells and femtocells, while avoiding co-tier and cross-tier interference. Mobility management is also addressed as another important issue in HetNets, especially in hand-ins from macrocell to femtocell base stations. The existing research considers a limited number of methods for handover optimisation, such as signal strength and call admission control (CAC) to avoid unnecessary handovers, while our novel SON handover management method implements a comprehensive algorithm that performs sensing process, as well as resource availability and user residence checks to initiate the handover process at the optimal time. In addition to this, the novel femto over macro priority (FoMP) check in this process also gives the femtocell target nodes priority over the congested macrocells in order to improve the QoS at both the network tiers. Inter-cell interference, as the key challenge of HetNets, is also investigated by research on the existing time-domain, frequency-domain and power control methods. A novel SON interference mitigation algorithm is proposed, which is based on enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (eICIC) with power control process. The 3-phase power control algorithm contains signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) measurements, channel quality indicator (CQI) mapping and transmission power amendments to avoid the occurrence of interference due to the effects of high transmission power. The results of this research confirm that if heterogeneous systems are backed-up with SON management strategies, not only can improve the network capacity and QoS, but also the new network challenges such as inter-cell interference can also be mitigated in new releases of LTE-A network
