New delay-dependent stability criteria for recurrent neural networks with time-varying delays

A new improved delay-dependent stability criterion expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities is derived by constructing a dedicated Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional via utilizing Wirtinger inequality and convex combination approach. Moreover, a further improved delay-dependent stability criterion is established by means of a new partitioning method for bounding conditions on the activation function and certain new activation function conditions presented. Finally, the application of these novel results to an illustrative example from the literature has been investigated and their effectiveness is shown via comparison with the existing recent ones
Discrete-time recurrent neural networks with time-varying delays: Exponential stability analysis

The delay is of the time-varying nature, and the activation functions are assumed to be neither differentiable nor strict monotonic. Furthermore, the description of the activation functions is more general than the recently commonly used Lipschitz conditions. Under such mild conditions, we first prove the existence of the equilibrium point. Then, by employing a Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, a unified linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is developed to establish sufficient conditions for the DRNNs to be globally exponentially stable. It is shown that the delayed DRNNs are globally exponentially stable if a certain LMI is solvable, where the feasibility of such an LMI can be easily checked by using the numerically efficient Matlab LMI Toolbox. A delay-dependent LMI approach to dynamics analysis of discrete-time recurrent neural networks with time-varying delays

The official published version can be obtained from the link below - Copyright 2007 Elsevier Ltd.In this Letter, the analysis problem for the existence and stability of periodic solutions is investigated for a class of general discrete-time recurrent neural networks with time-varying delays. For the neural networks under study, a generalized activation function is considered, and the traditional assumptions on the boundedness, monotony and differentiability of the activation functions are removed. By employing the latest free-weighting matrix method, an appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional is constructed and several sufficient conditions are established to ensure the existence, uniqueness, and globally exponential stability of the periodic solution for the addressed neural network. The conditions are dependent on both the lower bound and upper bound of the time-varying time delays. Furthermore, the conditions are expressed in terms of the linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which can be checked numerically using the effective LMI toolbox in MATLAB. Robust synchronization of an array of coupled stochastic discrete-time delayed neural networks

The individual neural network is subject to parameter uncertainty, stochastic disturbance, and time-varying delay, where the norm-bounded parameter uncertainties exist in both the state and weight matrices, the stochastic disturbance is in the form of a scalar Wiener process, and the time delay enters into the activation function. For the array of coupled neural networks, the constant coupling and delayed coupling are simultaneously considered. We aim to establish easy-to-verify conditions under which the addressed neural networks are synchronized. By using the Kronecker product as an effective tool, a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is developed to derive several sufficient criteria ensuring the coupled delayed neural networks to be globally, robustly, exponentially synchronized in the mean square. The LMI-based conditions obtained are dependent not only on the lower bound but also on the upper bound of the time-varying delay, and can be solved efficiently via the Matlab LMI Toolbox. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed synchronization scheme
Complexity without chaos: Plasticity within random recurrent networks generates robust timing and motor control
It is widely accepted that the complex dynamics characteristic of recurrent
neural circuits contributes in a fundamental manner to brain function. Progress
has been slow in understanding and exploiting the computational power of
recurrent dynamics for two main reasons: nonlinear recurrent networks often
exhibit chaotic behavior and most known learning rules do not work in robust
fashion in recurrent networks. Here we address both these problems by
demonstrating how random recurrent networks (RRN) that initially exhibit
chaotic dynamics can be tuned through a supervised learning rule to generate
locally stable neural patterns of activity that are both complex and robust to
noise. The outcome is a novel neural network regime that exhibits both
transiently stable and chaotic trajectories. We further show that the recurrent
learning rule dramatically increases the ability of RRNs to generate complex
spatiotemporal motor patterns, and accounts for recent experimental data
showing a decrease in neural variability in response to stimulus onset
Sensitivity and stability: A signal propagation sweet spot in a sheet of recurrent centre crossing neurons
In this paper we demonstrate that signal propagation across a laminar sheet of recurrent neurons is maximised when two conditions are met. First, neurons must be in the so-called centre crossing configuration. Second, the network’s topology and weights must be such that the network comprises strongly coupled nodes, yet lies within the weakly coupled regime. We develop tools from linear stability analysis with which to describe this regime, and use them to examine the apparent tension between the sensitivity and instability of centre crossing networks
Stable Electromyographic Sequence Prediction During Movement Transitions using Temporal Convolutional Networks
Transient muscle movements influence the temporal structure of myoelectric
signal patterns, often leading to unstable prediction behavior from
movement-pattern classification methods. We show that temporal convolutional
network sequential models leverage the myoelectric signal's history to discover
contextual temporal features that aid in correctly predicting movement
intentions, especially during interclass transitions. We demonstrate
myoelectric classification using temporal convolutional networks to effect 3
simultaneous hand and wrist degrees-of-freedom in an experiment involving nine
human-subjects. Temporal convolutional networks yield significant
performance improvements over other state-of-the-art methods in terms of both

Modeling of complex-valued Wiener systems using B-spline neural network
In this brief, a new complex-valued B-spline neural network is introduced in order to model the complex-valued Wiener system using observational input/output data. The complex-valued nonlinear static function in the Wiener system is represented using the tensor product from two univariate Bspline neural networks, using the real and imaginary parts of the system input. Following the use of a simple least squares parameter initialization scheme, the Gauss–Newton algorithm is applied for the parameter estimation, which incorporates the De Boor algorithm, including both the B-spline curve and the first-order derivatives recursion. Numerical examples, including a nonlinear high-power amplifier model in communication systems, are used to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approaches
