In particular, an urgent need has arisen to understand the effects of communication processes on system performances. Sampling and protocol are two fundamental aspects of a communication process which have attracted a great deal of research attention. Most research focus has been on the analysis and control of dynamical behaviors under certain sampling procedures and communication protocols. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the analysis and synthesis issues of NCSs with different sampling procedures (time-and event-driven sampling) and protocols (static and dynamic protocols). First, these sampling procedures and protocols are introduced in detail according to their engineering backgrounds as well as dynamic natures. Then, the developments of the stabilization, control, and filtering problems are systematically reviewed and discussed in great detail. Finally, we conclude the paper by outlining future research challenges for analysis and synthesis problems of NCSs with different communication processes. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 61329301, 61374127, and 61374010, the Royal Society of the UK, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany

A sequence of random variables, all of which are mutually independent but obey the Bernoulli distribution, is introduced to account for the probabilistic communication delays. The measurement-missing phenomenon occurs in a random way. The missing probability for each sensor satisfies a certain probabilistic distribution in the interval. Here, the attention is focused on the analysis and design of H∞ fuzzy output-feedback controllers such that the closed-loop Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy-control system is exponentially stable in the mean square. The disturbance-rejection attenuation is constrained to a given level by means of the H∞-performance index. Intensive analysis is carried out to obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of admissible output feedback controllers, which ensures the exponential stability as well as the prescribed H∞ performance. The cone-complementarity-linearization procedure is employed to cast the controller-design problem into a sequential minimization one that is solved by the semi-definite program method. Simulation results are utilized to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design technique in this paper. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, U.K., under Grant GR/S27658/01, in part by the Royal Society, U.K., in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of

Observer-based networked control for continuous-time systems with random sensor delays
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link - Copyright 2009 Elsevier LtdThis paper is concerned with the networked control system design for continuous-time systems with random measurement, where the measurement channel is assumed to subject to random sensor delay. A design scheme for the observer-based output feedback controller is proposed to render the closed-loop networked system exponentially mean-square stable with H∞ performance requirement. The technique employed is based on appropriate delay systems approach combined with a matrix variable decoupling technique. The design method is fulfilled through solving linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is used to verify the effectiveness and the merits of the present results. This paper was not presented at any IFAC meeting. Robust Fault Detection of Switched Linear Systems with State Delays
This correspondence deals with the problem of robust fault detection for discrete-time switched systems with state delays under an arbitrary switching signal. The fault detection filter is used as the residual generator, in which the filter parameters are dependent on the system mode. Attention is focused on designing the robust fault detection filter such that, for unknown inputs, control inputs, and model uncertainties, the estimation error between the residuals and faults is minimized. The problem of robust fault detection is converted into an H infin-filtering problem. By a switched Lyapunov functional approach, a sufficient condition for the solvability of this problem is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method
Dissipative Stabilization of Linear Systems with Time-Varying General Distributed Delays (Complete Version)
New methods are developed for the stabilization of a linear system with
general time-varying distributed delays existing at the system's states, inputs
and outputs. In contrast to most existing literature where the function of
time-varying delay is continuous and bounded, we assume it to be bounded and
measurable. Furthermore, the distributed delay kernels can be any
square-integrable function over a bounded interval, where the kernels are
handled directly by using a decomposition scenario without using
approximations. By constructing a Krasovski\u{i} functional via the application
of a novel integral inequality, sufficient conditions for the existence of a
dissipative state feedback controller are derived in terms of matrix
inequalities without utilizing the existing reciprocally convex combination
lemmas. The proposed synthesis (stability) conditions, which take dissipativity
into account, can be either solved directly by a standard numerical solver of
semidefinite programming if they are convex, or reshaped into linear matrix
inequalities, or solved via a proposed iterative algorithm. To the best of our
knowledge, no existing methods can handle the synthesis problem investigated in
this paper. Finally, numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the
effectiveness of the proposed methodologies.Comment: Accepted by Automatic
Recent advances on recursive filtering and sliding mode design for networked nonlinear stochastic systems: A survey

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Some recent advances on the recursive filtering and sliding mode design problems for nonlinear stochastic systems with network-induced phenomena are surveyed. The network-induced phenomena under consideration mainly include missing measurements, fading measurements, signal quantization, probabilistic sensor delays, sensor saturations, randomly occurring nonlinearities, and randomly occurring uncertainties. With respect to these network-induced phenomena, the developments on filtering and sliding mode design problems are systematically reviewed. In particular, concerning the network-induced phenomena, some recent results on the recursive filtering for time-varying nonlinear stochastic systems and sliding mode design for time-invariant nonlinear stochastic systems are given, respectively. Finally, conclusions are proposed and some potential future research works are pointed out. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant nos. 61134009, 61329301, 61333012, 61374127 and 11301118, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK under Grant no. Robust H-infinity sliding mode control for nonlinear stochastic systems with multiple data packet losses
This is the post-print version of this Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 John Wiley & SonsIn this paper, an ∞ sliding mode control (SMC) problem is studied for a class of discrete-time nonlinear stochastic systems with multiple data packet losses. The phenomenon of data packet losses, which is assumed to occur in a random way, is taken into consideration in the process of data transmission through both the state-feedback loop and the measurement output. The probability for the data packet loss for each individual state variable is governed by a corresponding individual random variable satisfying a certain probabilistic distribution over the interval [0 1]. The discrete-time system considered is also subject to norm-bounded parameter uncertainties and external nonlinear disturbances, which enter the system state equation in both matched and unmatched ways. A novel stochastic discrete-time switching function is proposed to facilitate the sliding mode controller design. Sufficient conditions are derived by means of the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. It is shown that the system dynamics in the specified sliding surface is exponentially stable in the mean square with a prescribed ∞ noise attenuation level if an LMI with an equality constraint is feasible. A discrete-time SMC controller is designed capable of guaranteeing the discrete-time sliding mode reaching condition of the specified sliding surface with probability 1. Finally, a simulation example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the U.K. under Grant

New summation inequalities and their applications to discrete-time delay systems
This paper provides new summation inequalities in both single and double
forms to be used in stability analysis of discrete-time systems with
time-varying delays. The potential capability of the newly derived inequalities
is demonstrated by establishing less conservative stability conditions for a
class of linear discrete-time systems with an interval time-varying delay in
the framework of linear matrix inequalities. The effectiveness and least
conservativeness of the derived stability conditions are shown by academic and
practical examples.Comment: 15 pages, 01 figur
