Tractable Combinations of Global Constraints
We study the complexity of constraint satisfaction problems involving global
constraints, i.e., special-purpose constraints provided by a solver and
represented implicitly by a parametrised algorithm. Such constraints are widely
used; indeed, they are one of the key reasons for the success of constraint
programming in solving real-world problems.
Previous work has focused on the development of efficient propagators for
individual constraints. In this paper, we identify a new tractable class of
constraint problems involving global constraints of unbounded arity. To do so,
we combine structural restrictions with the observation that some important
types of global constraint do not distinguish between large classes of

Structural Decompositions for Problems with Global Constraints
A wide range of problems can be modelled as constraint satisfaction problems
(CSPs), that is, a set of constraints that must be satisfied simultaneously.
Constraints can either be represented extensionally, by explicitly listing
allowed combinations of values, or implicitly, by special-purpose algorithms
provided by a solver.
Such implicitly represented constraints, known as global constraints, are
widely used; indeed, they are one of the key reasons for the success of
constraint programming in solving real-world problems. In recent years, a
variety of restrictions on the structure of CSP instances have been shown to
yield tractable classes of CSPs. However, most such restrictions fail to
guarantee tractability for CSPs with global constraints. We therefore study the
applicability of structural restrictions to instances with such constraints.
We show that when the number of solutions to a CSP instance is bounded in key
parts of the problem, structural restrictions can be used to derive new
tractable classes. Furthermore, we show that this result extends to
combinations of instances drawn from known tractable classes, as well as to CSP
instances where constraints assign costs to satisfying assignments.Comment: The final publication is available at Springer via

Guarantees and Limits of Preprocessing in Constraint Satisfaction and Reasoning
We present a first theoretical analysis of the power of polynomial-time
preprocessing for important combinatorial problems from various areas in AI. We
consider problems from Constraint Satisfaction, Global Constraints,
Satisfiability, Nonmonotonic and Bayesian Reasoning under structural
restrictions. All these problems involve two tasks: (i) identifying the
structure in the input as required by the restriction, and (ii) using the
identified structure to solve the reasoning task efficiently. We show that for
most of the considered problems, task (i) admits a polynomial-time
preprocessing to a problem kernel whose size is polynomial in a structural
problem parameter of the input, in contrast to task (ii) which does not admit
such a reduction to a problem kernel of polynomial size, subject to a
complexity theoretic assumption. As a notable exception we show that the
consistency problem for the AtMost-NValue constraint admits a polynomial kernel
consisting of a quadratic number of variables and domain values. Our results
provide a firm worst-case guarantees and theoretical boundaries for the
performance of polynomial-time preprocessing algorithms for the considered

The complexity of global cardinality constraints
In a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) the goal is to find an assignment
of a given set of variables subject to specified constraints. A global
cardinality constraint is an additional requirement that prescribes how many
variables must be assigned a certain value. We study the complexity of the
problem CCSP(G), the constraint satisfaction problem with global cardinality
constraints that allows only relations from the set G. The main result of this
paper characterizes sets G that give rise to problems solvable in polynomial
time, and states that the remaining such problems are NP-complete
Optimization Algorithm’s Problems: Comparison Study
Currently, in various fields and disciplines problem optimization are used commonly. In this concern, we have to define solutions which are two known concepts optimal or near optimal optimization problems in regards to some objects. Usually, it is surely difficult to sort problems out in only one step, but some processes can be followed by us which people usually call it problem solving. Frequently, the solution process is split into various steps which are accomplishing one after the other. Therefore, in this paper we consider some algorithms that help us to sort out problems, for exemplify, finding the shortest path, minimum spanning tree, maximum network flows and maximum matching. More importantly, the algorithm comparison will be presented. Additionally, the limitation of each algorithm. The last but not the least, the future research in this area will be approached
An exact CP approach for the cardinality-constrained euclidean minimum sum-of-squares clustering problem
Clustering consists in finding hidden groups from unlabeled data which are as homogeneous and well-separated as possible. Some contexts impose constraints on the clustering solutions such as restrictions on the size of each cluster, known as cardinality-constrained clustering. In this work we present an exact approach to solve the Cardinality-Constrained Euclidean Minimum Sum-of-Squares Clustering Problem. We take advantage of the structure of the problem to improve several aspects of previous constraint programming approaches: lower bounds, domain filtering, and branching. Computational experiments on benchmark instances taken from the literature confirm that our approach improves our solving capability over previously-proposed exact methods for this problem
Range and Roots: Two Common Patterns for Specifying and Propagating Counting and Occurrence Constraints
We propose Range and Roots which are two common patterns useful for
specifying a wide range of counting and occurrence constraints. We design
specialised propagation algorithms for these two patterns. Counting and
occurrence constraints specified using these patterns thus directly inherit a
propagation algorithm. To illustrate the capabilities of the Range and Roots
constraints, we specify a number of global constraints taken from the
literature. Preliminary experiments demonstrate that propagating counting and
occurrence constraints using these two patterns leads to a small loss in
performance when compared to specialised global constraints and is competitive
with alternative decompositions using elementary constraints.Comment: 41 pages, 7 figure
Quantum-accelerated constraint programming
Constraint programming (CP) is a paradigm used to model and solve constraint
satisfaction and combinatorial optimization problems. In CP, problems are
modeled with constraints that describe acceptable solutions and solved with
backtracking tree search augmented with logical inference. In this paper, we
show how quantum algorithms can accelerate CP, at both the levels of inference
and search. Leveraging existing quantum algorithms, we introduce a
quantum-accelerated filtering algorithm for the global
constraint and discuss its applicability to a broader family of global
constraints with similar structure. We propose frameworks for the integration
of quantum filtering algorithms within both classical and quantum backtracking
search schemes, including a novel hybrid classical-quantum backtracking search
method. This work suggests that CP is a promising candidate application for
early fault-tolerant quantum computers and beyond.Comment: published in Quantu
