    Online Simulation in Semiconductor Manufacturing

    In semiconductor manufacturing discrete event simulation systems are quite established to support multiple planning decisions. During the recent years, the productivity is increasing by using simulation methods. The motivation for this thesis is to use online simulation not only for planning decisions, but also for a wide range of operational decisions. Therefore an integrated online simulation system for short term forecasting has been developed. The production environment is a mature high mix logic wafer fab. It has been selected because of its vast potential for performance improvement. In this thesis several aspects of online simulation will be addressed: The first aspect is the implementation of an online simulation system in semiconductor manufacturing. The general problem is to achieve a high speed, a high level of detail, and a high forecast accuracy. To resolve these problems, an online simulation system has been created. The simulation model has a high level of detail. It is created automatically from underling fab data. To create such a simulation model from fab data, additional problems related to the underlying data arise. The major parts are the data access, the data integration, and the data quality. These problems have been solved by using an integrated data model with several data extraction, data transformation, and data cleaning steps. The second aspect is related to the accuracy of online simulation. The overall problem is to increase the forecast horizon, increase the level of detail of the forecast and reduce the forecast error. To provide useful forecast results, the simulation model contains a high level of modeling details and a proper initialization. The influences on the forecast quality will be analyzed. The results show that the simulation forecast accuracy achieves good quality to predict future fab performance. The last aspect is to find ways to use simulation forecast results to improve the fab performance. Numerous applications have been identified. For each application a description is available. It contains the requirements of such a forecast, the decision variables, and background information. An application example shows, where a performance problem exists and how online simulation is able to resolve it. To further enhance the real time capability of online simulation, a major part is to investigate new ways to connect the simulation model with the wafer fab. For fab driven simulation, the simulation model and the real wafer fab run concurrently. The wafer fab provides several events to update the simulation during runtime. So the model is always synchronized with the real fab. It becomes possible to start a simulation run in real time. There is no further delay for data extraction, data transformation and model creation. A prototype for a single work center has been implemented to show the feasibility

    How does the rise of China affect Malaysia's electronic and electrical sector?

    After joining the WTO in 2001, China’s total exports grew by 19.3% per annum up to 2013 and the country emerged as the world’s biggest exporter of manufactured electronics. China’s rise has had an impact on developing countries such as Malaysia, a major exporter of electronic and electrical (E&E) goods. Malaysia aims to be a high-income economy by 2020, and upgrading its E&E value chain is critical to this goal. Malaysia is part of the East Asian production network and China imports intermediate inputs from Malaysia’s E&E for its final exports while simultaneously expanding in similar product spaces. This means the effect on Malaysia of China’s rise is complex. Contemporary literature divides the impact of China’s rise into competitive and complementary effects, and this research aims to further understand the effect of China’s rise on Malaysia’s E&E trade and investment channels, using a mixed methodology approach. The research analyses the bilateral E&E trade patterns, the extent of trade competition at the destination markets, with the trade structure disaggregated by sophistication and by type of goods1 analysis. Subsequently it examines China’s impact on the semiconductor machinery segment, a backward linkage of the IC industry. Finally, the influence of China’s rise on investments aspects of Malaysia’s E&E industry is also explored. 1 Types of goods category such as final goods, parts and accessories or durables. v The research finds that while imports from China compete with imports from Malaysia in the US and Japanese markets (the EU market is different), China’s competition in trade is also spurring Malaysia to upgrade its exports’ sophistication. China also creates new demand for Malaysia’s semiconductor machinery. Finally, while resulting in short-term job losses, China’s diversion of E&E investment from Malaysia provide opportunities for Malaysians to start new firms, and for MNCs based in Malaysia to upgrade their production

    ABSTRACT Kampung houses are houses in kampung area of the city. Kampung House oftenly transformed into others use as urban dynamics. One of the transfomation is related to the commercial activities addition by the house owner. It make house with full private space become into mixused house with more public spaces or completely changed into full public commercial building. This study investigate the spatial transformation pattern of the kampung houses due to their commercial activities addition. Site observations, interviews and questionnaires were performed to study the spatial transformation. This study found that in kampung houses, the spatial transformation pattern was depend on type of commercial activities and owner perceptions, and there are several steps of the spatial transformation related the commercial activity addition.
