AN ENHANCED TIBIA FRACTURE DETECTION TOOL USING IMAGE PROCESSING AND CLASSIFICATION FUSION TECHNIQUES IN X-RAY IMAGES
Automatic detection of fractures from x-ray images is considered as an important process in medical image analysis by both orthopaedic and radiologic point of view. This paper proposes a fusion-classification technique for automatic fracture detection from long bones, in particular the leg bones (Tibia bones). The proposed system has four steps, namely, preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction and bone detect ion, which uses an amalgamation of image processing techniques for successful detection of fractures. Three classifiers, Feed Forward Back Propagation Neural Networks (BPNN), Support Vector Machine Classifiers (SVM) and NaEF;ve Bayes Classifiers (NB) are used during fusion classification. The results from various experiments prove that the proposed system is shows significant improvement in terms of detection rate and speed of classification
V-SLAM-AIDED PHOTOGRAMMETRY TO PROCESS FISHEYE MULTI-CAMERA SYSTEMS SEQUENCES
The advent of mobile mapping systems (MMSs) and computer vision algorithms has enriched a wide range of navigation and mapping tasks such as localisation, 3D motion estimation and 3D mapping. This study focuses on Visual Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (V-SLAM) in the context of two in-houses MMSs: Ant3D, a patented five-fisheye multi-camera rig and GeoRizon, a high-resolution stereo fisheye rig. The aim is to leverage V-SLAM to enhance the systems performance in near-real-time and non-real-time 3D reconstruction applications. The research investigates both Monocular and Stereo V-SLAM applied to both MMSs and tackles the challenge of combining the V-SLAM estimated trajectory of one or a pair of cameras with known multi-camera relative orientation. We propose a state-of-the-art code that serves as a flexible and extensible platform for MMSs image acquisition and processing, along with an adapted version of the well-established ORB-SLAM3.0. Evaluation is performed in a cultural heritage challenging setup: the Minguzzi spiral staircase in the Duomo di Milano Cathedral. Performed tests highlight that introducing V-SLAM trajectories as well as pre-calibrated interior orientation and multi-camera constraints improve speed, applicability and accuracy of 3D surveys
From 3D Models to 3D Prints: an Overview of the Processing Pipeline
Due to the wide diffusion of 3D printing technologies, geometric algorithms
for Additive Manufacturing are being invented at an impressive speed. Each
single step, in particular along the Process Planning pipeline, can now count
on dozens of methods that prepare the 3D model for fabrication, while analysing
and optimizing geometry and machine instructions for various objectives. This
report provides a classification of this huge state of the art, and elicits the
relation between each single algorithm and a list of desirable objectives
during Process Planning. The objectives themselves are listed and discussed,
along with possible needs for tradeoffs. Additive Manufacturing technologies
are broadly categorized to explicitly relate classes of devices and supported
features. Finally, this report offers an analysis of the state of the art while
discussing open and challenging problems from both an academic and an

Proximal algorithms for multicomponent image recovery problems
International audienceIn recent years, proximal splitting algorithms have been applied to various monocomponent signal and image recovery problems. In this paper, we address the case of multicomponent problems. We first provide closed form expressions for several important multicomponent proximity operators and then derive extensions of existing proximal algorithms to the multicomponent setting. These results are applied to stereoscopic image recovery, multispectral image denoising, and image decomposition into texture and geometry components
Automatic face recognition using stereo images
Face recognition is an important pattern recognition problem, in the study of both natural and artificial learning problems. Compaxed to other biometrics, it is non-intrusive, non- invasive and requires no paxticipation from the subjects. As a result, it has many applications varying from human-computer-interaction to access control and law-enforcement to crowd surveillance. In typical optical image based face recognition systems, the systematic vaxiability arising from representing the three-dimensional (3D) shape of a face by a two-dimensional (21)) illumination intensity matrix is treated as random vaxiability. Multiple examples of the face displaying vaxying pose and expressions axe captured in different imaging conditions. The imaging environment, pose and expressions are strictly controlled and the images undergo rigorous normalisation and pre-processing. This may be implemented in a paxtially or a fully automated system. Although these systems report high classification accuracies (>90%), they lack versatility and tend to fail when deployed outside laboratory conditions. Recently, more sophisticated 3D face recognition systems haxnessing the depth information have emerged. These systems usually employ specialist equipment such as laser scanners and structured light projectors. Although more accurate than 2D optical image based recognition, these systems are equally difficult to implement in a non-co-operative environment. Existing face recognition systems, both 2D and 3D, detract from the main advantages of face recognition and fail to fully exploit its non-intrusive capacity. This is either because they rely too much on subject co-operation, which is not always available, or because they cannot cope with noisy data. The main objective of this work was to investigate the role of depth information in face recognition in a noisy environment. A stereo-based system, inspired by the human binocular vision, was devised using a pair of manually calibrated digital off-the-shelf cameras in a stereo setup to compute depth information. Depth values extracted from 2D intensity images using stereoscopy are extremely noisy, and as a result this approach for face recognition is rare. This was cofirmed by the results of our experimental work. Noise in the set of correspondences, camera calibration and triangulation led to inaccurate depth reconstruction, which in turn led to poor classifier accuracy for both 3D surface matching and 211) 2 depth maps. Recognition experiments axe performed on the Sheffield Dataset, consisting 692 images of 22 individuals with varying pose, illumination and expressions
Hierarchical stack filtering : a bitplane-based algorithm for massively parallel processors
With the development of novel parallel architectures for image processing, the implementation
of well-known image operators needs to be reformulated to take advantage of the so-called
massive parallelism. In this work, we propose a general algorithm that implements a large
class of nonlinear filters, called stack filters, with a 2D-array processor. The proposed method consists of decomposing an image into bitplanes with the bitwise decomposition, and then process every bitplane hierarchically. The filtered image is reconstructed by simply stacking the filtered bitplanes according to their order of significance. Owing to its hierarchical structure, our algorithm allows us to trade-off between image quality and processing time, and to significantly reduce the computation time of low-entropy images. Also, experimental tests show that the processing time of our method is substantially lower than that of classical methods when using large structuring elements. All these features are of interest to a variety of real-time applications based on morphological operations such as video segmentation and video enhancement
A combined first and second order variational approach for image reconstruction
In this paper we study a variational problem in the space of functions of
bounded Hessian. Our model constitutes a straightforward higher-order extension
of the well known ROF functional (total variation minimisation) to which we add
a non-smooth second order regulariser. It combines convex functions of the
total variation and the total variation of the first derivatives. In what
follows, we prove existence and uniqueness of minimisers of the combined model
and present the numerical solution of the corresponding discretised problem by
employing the split Bregman method. The paper is furnished with applications of
our model to image denoising, deblurring as well as image inpainting. The
obtained numerical results are compared with results obtained from total
generalised variation (TGV), infimal convolution and Euler's elastica, three
other state of the art higher-order models. The numerical discussion confirms
that the proposed higher-order model competes with models of its kind in
avoiding the creation of undesirable artifacts and blocky-like structures in
the reconstructed images -- a known disadvantage of the ROF model -- while
being simple and efficiently numerically solvable.Comment: 34 pages, 89 figure
