Philosophy of Computer Science: An Introductory Course

    Get PDF
There are many branches of philosophy called “the philosophy of X,” where X = disciplines ranging from history to physics. The philosophy of artificial intelligence has a long history, and there are many courses and texts with that title. Surprisingly, the philosophy of computer science is not nearly as well-developed. This article proposes topics that might constitute the philosophy of computer science and describes a course covering those topics, along with suggested readings and assignments

Towards a more natural and intelligent interface with embodied conversation agent

Conversational agent also known as chatterbots are computer programs which are designed to converse like a human as much as their intelligent allows. In many ways, they are the embodiment of Turing's vision. The ability for computers to converse with human users using natural language would arguably increase their usefulness. Recent advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in general have advances this field in realizing the vision of a more humanoid interactive system. This paper presents and discusses the use of embodied conversation agent (ECA) for the imitation games. This paper also presents the technical design of our ECA and its performance. In the interactive media industry, it can also been observed that the ECA are getting popular

The effect of component recognition on flexibility and speech recognition performance in a spoken question answering system

    Get PDF
A spoken question answering system that recognizes questions as full sentences performs well when users ask one of the questions defined. A system that recognizes component words and finds an equivalent defined question might be more flexible, but is likely to have decreased speech recognition performance, leading to a loss in overall system success. The research described in this document compares the advantage in flexibility to the loss in recognition performance when using component recognition. Questions posed by participants were processed by a system of each type. As expected, the component system made frequent recognition errors while detecting words (word error rate of 31%). In comparison, the full system made fewer errors while detecting full sentences (sentence error rate of 10%). Nevertheless, the component system succeeded in providing proper responses to 76% of the queries posed, while the full system responded properly to only 46%. Four variations of the traditional tf-idf weighting method were compared as applied to the matching of short text strings (fewer than 10 words). It was found that the general approach was successful in finding matches, and that all four variations compensated for the loss in speech recognition performance to a similar degree. No significant difference due to the variations in weighting was detected in the results

Investigating if patents are really useful: a brief study

    Get PDF
Full textThe objectives of this research project are to highlight the key objectives of patent protection, to investigate if attempts at patent use have been beneficial and review the reasons behind its underutilisation, and to research on possible remedies to increase patent use.The research was hinged more towards qualitative study, with very little or no aspects of quantitative character. On the task of identifying the objectives of IP rights, the study involved reviewing early scholarly literature on IP theory, development and jurisprudence. Studying the extent of patent use in Kenya involved accessing relevant databases and undertaking patents searches in the sector of technology. The research also consisted of carrying out interviews with a number of enterprises whose core product is a technological innovation. These interviews' intention was to probe as to whether or not these enterprises have utilised patent protection for their product, the reasons attributed to this, and the impact patents have had to their business. In-depth research was also be conducted to analyse the effects patent-related monopolies have had, and their impact on patent protection. The paper found that patents are severely underutilised in Kenya, largely due to a lack of awareness . It further found that the market monopoly of 20 years that patents secure often leads to negative effects with grave consequences. These challenges may be ameliorated by increasing public .awareness and advocating for policy reform

A hermeneutic-phenomenological investigation of psychotherapist disillusionment

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to discover a thematic description of the experience of disillusionment among psychotherapists. A hermeneutic-phenomenological method was utilized to analyze the interview transcripts of eight participants. Analysis of the data produced a group of themes that composed the meaning-structure of the participants\u27 experience of disillusionment. Disillusionment was found to be the experience of discrepancy between one\u27s expectations or ideals, and the reality one encounters. Thisdiscrepancy was experienced in relation to: 1) one\u27s search for meaning in the profession of psychotherapy; 2) one\u27s identity as a psychotherapist; and 3) one\u27s relationships with others. These themes emerged out of the grounds of Self, Other, and Social World. Results were discussed in relation to existing literature concerning disillusionment.Suggestions for future research concerning disillusionment were considered. Implications for therapist training, and therapist empowerment were also discussed
