    Mining Sequences of Developer Interactions in Visual Studio for Usage Smells

    In this paper, we present a semi-automatic approach for mining a large-scale dataset of IDE interactions to extract usage smells, i.e., inefficient IDE usage patterns exhibited by developers in the field. The approach outlined in this paper first mines frequent IDE usage patterns, filtered via a set of thresholds and by the authors, that are subsequently supported (or disputed) using a developer survey, in order to form usage smells. In contrast with conventional mining of IDE usage data, our approach identifies time-ordered sequences of developer actions that are exhibited by many developers in the field. This pattern mining workflow is resilient to the ample noise present in IDE datasets due to the mix of actions and events that these datasets typically contain. We identify usage patterns and smells that contribute to the understanding of the usability of Visual Studio for debugging, code search, and active file navigation, and, more broadly, to the understanding of developer behavior during these software development activities. Among our findings is the discovery that developers are reluctant to use conditional breakpoints when debugging, due to perceived IDE performance problems as well as due to the lack of error checking in specifying the conditional

    What Does Stock Ownership Breadth Measure?

    Using holdings data on a representative sample of all Shanghai Stock Exchange investors, we show that increases in ownership breadth (the fraction of market participants who own a stock) predict low returns: highest change quintile stocks underperform lowest quintile stocks by 23% per year. Small retail investors drive this result. Retail ownership breadth increases appear to be correlated with overpricing. Among institutional investors, however, the opposite holds: Stocks in the top decile of wealth-weighted institutional breadth change outperform the bottom decile by 8% per year, consistent with prior work that interprets breadth as a measure of short-sales constraints.

    Modelling oil price expectations: evidence from survey data

    Using Consensus Forecast survey data on WTI oil price expectations for three and twelve month horizons over the period November 1989 – December 2008, we find that the rational expectation hypothesis is rejected and that none of the traditional extrapolative, regressive and adaptive processes fits the data. We suggest a mixed expectation model defined as a linear combination of these traditional processes, which we interpret as the aggregation of individual mixing behavior and of heterogenous groups of agents using simple processes. This approach is consistent with the economically rational expectations theory. We show that the target price included in the regressive component of this model depends on macroeconomic fundamentals whose effects are subject to structural changes.     Maternal cell-free DNA-based screening for fetal microdeletion and the importance of careful diagnostic follow-up.

    BackgroundNoninvasive prenatal screening (NIPS) by next-generation sequencing of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in maternal plasma is used to screen for common aneuploidies such as trisomy 21 in high risk pregnancies. NIPS can identify fetal genomic microdeletions; however, sensitivity and specificity have not been systematically evaluated. Commercial companies have begun to offer expanded panels including screening for common microdeletion syndromes such as 22q11.2 deletion (DiGeorge syndrome) without reporting the genomic coordinates or whether the deletion is maternal or fetal. Here we describe a phenotypically normal mother and fetus who tested positive for atypical 22q deletion via maternal plasma cfDNA testing.MethodsWe performed cfDNA sequencing on saved maternal plasma obtained at 11 weeks of gestation from a phenotypically normal woman with a singleton pregnancy whose earlier screening at a commercial laboratory was reported to be positive for a 22q11.2 microdeletion. Fluorescence in situ hybridization and chromosomal microarray diagnostic genetic tests were done postnatally.ConclusionNIPS detected a 22q microdeletion that, upon diagnostic workup, did not include the DiGeorge critical region. Diagnostic prenatal or postnatal testing with chromosomal microarray and appropriate parental studies to determine precise genomic coordinates and inheritance should follow a positive microdeletion NIPS result

    Inference of Ancestral Recombination Graphs through Topological Data Analysis

    The recent explosion of genomic data has underscored the need for interpretable and comprehensive analyses that can capture complex phylogenetic relationships within and across species. Recombination, reassortment and horizontal gene transfer constitute examples of pervasive biological phenomena that cannot be captured by tree-like representations. Starting from hundreds of genomes, we are interested in the reconstruction of potential evolutionary histories leading to the observed data. Ancestral recombination graphs represent potential histories that explicitly accommodate recombination and mutation events across orthologous genomes. However, they are computationally costly to reconstruct, usually being infeasible for more than few tens of genomes. Recently, Topological Data Analysis (TDA) methods have been proposed as robust and scalable methods that can capture the genetic scale and frequency of recombination. We build upon previous TDA developments for detecting and quantifying recombination, and present a novel framework that can be applied to hundreds of genomes and can be interpreted in terms of minimal histories of mutation and recombination events, quantifying the scales and identifying the genomic locations of recombinations. We implement this framework in a software package, called TARGet, and apply it to several examples, including small migration between different populations, human recombination, and horizontal evolution in finches inhabiting the Gal\'apagos Islands.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures.     The role of somatic maturation on bioimpedance patterns and body composition in male elite youth soccer players

    The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of chronological age (CA) and somatic maturation on body composition (BC) and bioimpedance parameters in male elite soccer players. BC and bioimpedance variables were measured in a sample of 249 players aged 9 1218 years of age and registered in two professional Italian soccer teams. Results from segmental analysis showed transition time points where the influence of CA and somatic maturation on bioimpedance patterns and BC characteristics increased or subsided. The accelerated phases were assessed for fat free mass, total body water, and upper muscle area, with a starting time point at approximately 122.00 years from peak at velocity (YPHV), and for body cell mass, whose developmental tempo sped up around 121.00 YPHV. An increase in the rate of development was also observed close to 122.00 YPHV for phase angle (PA), although without accelerated phases. From a CA point of view, significant slope changes were found for all BC and bioimpendance variables, except for the calf muscle area. Although the starting points and the span of the accelerated phases were different, they subsided or disappeared at ~15 years, except for PA, whose growth waned at ~17 years
