    Flexible-Link Robot Control Using a Linear Parameter Varying Systems Methodology

    This paper addresses the issues of the Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) modelling and control of flexible-link robot manipulators. The LPV formalism allows the synthesis of nonlinear control laws and the assessment of their closed-loop stability and performances in a simple and effective manner, based on the use of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI). Following the quasi-LPV modelling approach, an LPV model of a flexible manipulator is obtained, starting from the nonlinear dynamic model stemming from Euler-Lagrange equations. Based on this LPV model, which has a rational dependence in terms of the varying parameters, two different methods for the synthesis of LPV controllers are explored. They guarantee the asymptotic stability and some level of closed-loop ℒ 2 -gain performance on a bounded parametric set. The first method exploits a descriptor representation that simplifies the rational dependence of the LPV model, whereas the second one manages the troublesome rational dependence by using dilated LMI conditions and taking the particular structure of the model into account. The resulting controllers involve the measured state variables only, namely the joint positions and velocities. Simulation results are presented that illustrate the validity of the proposed control methodology. Comparisons with an inversion-based nonlinear control method are performed in the presence of velocity measurement noise, model uncertainties and high-frequency inputs

    The e-Bike Motor Assembly: Towards Advanced Robotic Manipulation for Flexible Manufacturing

    Robotic manipulation is currently undergoing a profound paradigm shift due to the increasing needs for flexible manufacturing systems, and at the same time, because of the advances in enabling technologies such as sensing, learning, optimization, and hardware. This demands for robots that can observe and reason about their workspace, and that are skillfull enough to complete various assembly processes in weakly-structured settings. Moreover, it remains a great challenge to enable operators for teaching robots on-site, while managing the inherent complexity of perception, control, motion planning and reaction to unexpected situations. Motivated by real-world industrial applications, this paper demonstrates the potential of such a paradigm shift in robotics on the industrial case of an e-Bike motor assembly. The paper presents a concept for teaching and programming adaptive robots on-site and demonstrates their potential for the named applications. The framework includes: (i) a method to teach perception systems onsite in a self-supervised manner, (ii) a general representation of object-centric motion skills and force-sensitive assembly skills, both learned from demonstration, (iii) a sequencing approach that exploits a human-designed plan to perform complex tasks, and (iv) a system solution for adapting and optimizing skills online. The aforementioned components are interfaced through a four-layer software architecture that makes our framework a tangible industrial technology. To demonstrate the generality of the proposed framework, we provide, in addition to the motivating e-Bike motor assembly, a further case study on dense box packing for logistics automation

    A 3D descriptor to detect task-oriented grasping points in clothing

This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Manipulating textile objects with a robot is a challenging task, especially because the garment perception is difficult due to the endless configurations it can adopt, coupled with a large variety of colors and designs. Most current approaches follow a multiple re-grasp strategy, in which clothes are sequentially grasped from different points until one of them yields a recognizable configuration. In this work we propose a method that combines 3D and appearance information to directly select a suitable grasping point for the task at hand, which in our case consists of hanging a shirt or a polo shirt from a hook. Our method follows a coarse-to-fine approach in which, first, the collar of the garment is detected and, next, a grasping point on the lapel is chosen using a novel 3D descriptor. In contrast to current 3D descriptors, ours can run in real time, even when it needs to be densely computed over the input image. Our central idea is to take advantage of the structured nature of range images that most depth sensors provide and, by exploiting integral imaging, achieve speed-ups of two orders of magnitude with respect to competing approaches, while maintaining performance.     Observer-based robust fault estimation for fault-tolerant control

    A control system is fault-tolerant if it possesses the capability of optimizing the system stability and admissible performance subject to bounded faults, complexity and modeling uncertainty. Based on this definition this thesis is concerned with the theoretical developments of the combination of robust fault estimation (FE) and robust active fault tolerant control (AFTC) for systems with both faults and uncertainties.This thesis develops robust strategies for AFTC involving a joint problem of on-line robust FE and robust adaptive control. The disturbances and modeling uncertainty affect the FE and FTC performance. Hence, the proposed robust observer-based fault estimator schemes are combined with several control methods to achieve the desired system performance and robust active fault tolerance. The controller approaches involve concepts of output feedback control, adaptive control, robust observer-based state feedback control. A new robust FE method has been developed initially to take into account the joint effect of both fault and disturbance signals, thereby rejecting the disturbances and enhancing the accuracy of the fault estimation. This is then extended to encompass the robustness with respect to modeling uncertainty.As an extension to the robust FE and FTC scheme a further development is made for direct application to smooth non-linear systems via the use of linear parameter-varying systems (LPV) modeling.The main contributions of the research are thus:- The development of a robust observer-based FE method and integration design for the FE and AFTC systems with the bounded time derivative fault magnitudes, providing the solution based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) methodology. A stability proof for the integrated design of the robust FE within the FTC system.- An improvement is given to the proposed robust observer-based FE method and integrated design for FE and AFTC systems under the existence of different disturbance structures.- New guidance for the choice of learning rate of the robust FE algorithm.- Some improvement compared with the recent literature by considering the FTC problem in a more general way, for example by using LPV modeling

    From plain visualisation to vibration sensing: using a camera to control the flexibilities in the ITER remote handling equipment

    Thermonuclear fusion is expected to play a key role in the energy market during the second half of this century, reaching 20% of the electricity generation by 2100. For many years, fusion scientists and engineers have been developing the various technologies required to build nuclear power stations allowing a sustained fusion reaction. To the maximum possible extent, maintenance operations in fusion reactors are performed manually by qualified workers in full accordance with the "as low as reasonably achievable" (ALARA) principle. However, the option of hands-on maintenance becomes impractical, difficult or simply impossible in many circumstances, such as high biological dose rates. In this case, maintenance tasks will be performed with remote handling (RH) techniques. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ITER, to be commissioned in southern France around 2025, will be the first fusion experiment producing more power from fusion than energy necessary to heat the plasma. Its main objective is “to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion power for peaceful purposes”. However ITER represents an unequalled challenge in terms of RH system design, since it will be much more demanding and complex than any other remote maintenance system previously designed. The introduction of man-in-the-loop capabilities in the robotic systems designed for ITER maintenance would provide useful assistance during inspection, i.e. by providing the operator the ability and flexibility to locate and examine unplanned targets, or during handling operations, i.e. by making peg-in-hole tasks easier. Unfortunately, most transmission technologies able to withstand the very specific and extreme environmental conditions existing inside a fusion reactor are based on gears, screws, cables and chains, which make the whole system very flexible and subject to vibrations. This effect is further increased as structural parts of the maintenance equipment are generally lightweight and slender structures due to the size and the arduous accessibility to the reactor. Several methodologies aiming at avoiding or limiting the effects of vibrations on RH system performance have been investigated over the past decade. These methods often rely on the use of vibration sensors such as accelerometers. However, reviewing market shows that there is no commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) accelerometer that meets the very specific requirements for vibration sensing in the ITER in-vessel RH equipment (resilience to high total integrated dose, high sensitivity). The customisation and qualification of existing products or investigation of new concepts might be considered. However, these options would inevitably involve high development costs. While an extensive amount of work has been published on the modelling and control of flexible manipulators in the 1980s and 1990s, the possibility to use vision devices to stabilise an oscillating robotic arm has only been considered very recently and this promising solution has not been discussed at length. In parallel, recent developments on machine vision systems in nuclear environment have been very encouraging. Although they do not deal directly with vibration sensing, they open up new prospects in the use of radiation tolerant cameras. This thesis aims to demonstrate that vibration control of remote maintenance equipment operating in harsh environments such as ITER can be achieved without considering any extra sensor besides the embarked rad-hardened cameras that will inevitably be used to provide real-time visual feedback to the operators. In other words it is proposed to consider the radiation-tolerant vision devices as full sensors providing quantitative data that can be processed by the control scheme and not only as plain video feedback providing qualitative information. The work conducted within the present thesis has confirmed that methods based on the tracking of visual features from an unknown environment are effective candidates for the real-time control of vibrations. Oscillations induced at the end effector are estimated by exploiting a simple physical model of the manipulator. Using a camera mounted in an eye-in-hand configuration, this model is adjusted using direct measurement of the tip oscillations with respect to the static environment. The primary contribution of this thesis consists of implementing a markerless tracker to determine the velocity of a tip-mounted camera in an untrimmed environment in order to stabilise an oscillating long-reach robotic arm. In particular, this method implies modifying an existing online interaction matrix estimator to make it self-adjustable and deriving a multimode dynamic model of a flexible rotating beam. An innovative vision-based method using sinusoidal regression to sense low-frequency oscillations is also proposed and tested. Finally, the problem of online estimation of the image capture delay for visual servoing applications with high dynamics is addressed and an original approach based on the concept of cross-correlation is presented and experimentally validated

    Perception Framework for Activities of Daily Living Manipulation Tasks

    There is an increasing concern in tackling the problems faced by the elderly community and physically in-locked people to lead an independent life experience problems with self- care. The need for developing service robots that can help people with mobility impairments is hence very essential. Developing a control framework for shared human-robot autonomy will allow locked-in individuals to perform the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in a exible way. The relevant ADL scenarios were identi ed as handling objects, self-feeding, and opening doors for indoor nav- igation assistance. Multiple experiments were conducted, which demonstrates that the robot executes these daily living tasks reliably without requiring adjustment to the environment. The indoor manipulation tasks hold the challenge of dealing with a wide range of unknown objects. This thesis presents a framework developed for grasping without requiring a priori knowledge of the objects being manipulated. A successful manipulation task requires the combination of aspects such as envi- ronment modeling, object detection with pose estimation, grasp planning, motion planning followed by an e?cient grasp execution, which is validated by a 6+2 Degree of Freedom robotic manipulator

    Optimized state feedback regulation of 3DOF helicopter system via extremum seeking

    In this paper, an optimized state feedback regulation of a 3 degree of freedom (DOF) helicopter is designed via extremum seeking (ES) technique. Multi-parameter ES is applied to optimize the tracking performance via tuning State Vector Feedback with Integration of the Control Error (SVFBICE). Discrete multivariable version of ES is developed to minimize a cost function that measures the performance of the controller. The cost function is a function of the error between the actual and desired axis positions. The controller parameters are updated online as the optimization takes place. This method significantly decreases the time in obtaining optimal controller parameters. Simulations were conducted for the online optimization under both fixed and varying operating conditions. The results demonstrate the usefulness of using ES for preserving the maximum attainable performance

    Topics in Machining with Industrial Robot Manipulators and Optimal Motion Control

    Two main topics are considered in this thesis: Machining with industrial robot manipulators and optimal motion control of robots and vehicles. The motivation for research on the first subject is the need for flexible and accurate production processes employing industrial robots as their main component. The challenge to overcome here is to achieve high-accuracy machining solutions, in spite of the strong process forces required for the task. Because of the process forces, the nonlinear dynamics of the manipulator, such as the joint compliance and backlash, may significantly degrade the achieved machining accuracy of the manufactured part. In this thesis, a macro/micro-manipulator configuration is considered to the purpose of increasing the milling accuracy. In particular, a model-based control architecture is developed for control of the macro/micro-manipulator setup. The considered approach is validated by experimental results from extensive milling experiments in aluminium and steel. Related to the problem of high-accuracy milling is the topic of robot modeling. To this purpose, two different approaches are considered; modeling of the quasi-static joint dynamics and dynamic compliance modeling. The first problem is approached by an identification method for determining the joint stiffness and backlash. The second problem is approached by using gray-box identification based on subspace-identification methods. Both identification algorithms are evaluated experimentally. Finally, online state estimation is considered as a means to determine the workspace position and orientation of the robot tool. Kalman Filters and Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filters are employed to the purpose of sensor fusion of internal robot measurements and measurements from an inertial measurement unit for estimation of the desired states. The approaches considered are fully implemented and evaluated on experimental data. The second part of the thesis discusses optimal motion control applied to robot manipulators and road vehicles. A control architecture for online control of a robot manipulator in high-performance path tracking is developed, and the architecture is evaluated in extensive simulations. The main characteristic of the control strategy is that it combines coordinated feedback control along both the tangential and transversal directions of the path; this separation is achieved in the framework of natural coordinates. One motivation for research on optimal control of road vehicles in time-critical maneuvers is the desire to develop improved vehicle-safety systems. In this thesis, a method for solving optimal maneuvering problems using nonlinear optimization is discussed. More specifically, vehicle and tire modeling and the optimization formulations required to get useful solutions to these problems are investigated. The considered method is evaluated on different combinations of chassis and tire models, in maneuvers under different road conditions, and for investigation of optimal maneuvers in systems for electronic stability control.
