Ideal Secret Sharing Schemes with Share Selectability

Abstract. In this paper, we investigate a new concept, called share selectable secret sharing, where no unauthorized set can obtain information of the secret (in the information-theoretic sense) even if shares are selectable as arbitrary values which are independent of the secret. We propose two totally selectable (i.e., all users' shares are selectable) secret sharing schemes with unanimous structure. We also propose a quasiselectable (i.e., a part of each user's share is selectable) secret sharing scheme with certain hierarchical structures which contains special cases of the hierarchical threshold structures introduced by Tamir Tassa in TCC2004 (or its full version (J. Cryptology2007)). If all selectable shares are randomly chosen, then our schemes are perfect. Finally, we discuss the effect of the leakage information of the secret if a weak secret is indicated as a selectable share

The emergence and development of maintained secondary education in ealing1902-1944

The thesis attempts to explain the emergence of maintained secondary education in Ealing by 1913 and to describe the subsequent development of the maintained secondary schools up to 1944. These developments are set within the context of the community which formed the borough and of the county of Middlesex. They are related to contemporary educational ideas and practices. Contributory demographic, social and political influences on the development of maintained secondary education in Ealing are identified and an assessment of the roles of influential personalities is undertaken. Some appraisal of the success or otherwise of Middlesex and Ealing policy and of the place of this policy within the national framework is offered. An effort has been made to portray adequately the educational experiences of boys and girls at the Ealing County Secondary Schools in the period 1913-1944.The possibility of a thesis first arose with the acquisition of notebooks and documents belonging to the late Mr. E.P.H. Pugh. These were kindly lent by Mrs. Pugh. The notebooks contain copies of documents relating to many aspects of Ealing's history including some relevant to education. The documents in the collection include some annual reports of the Ealing Educational Association and the Ealing Education Committee together with letters and papers concerned with discussions prior to the implementation of the 1944 Education Act in the borough. As such the collection has been a useful springboard from which to launch a study of secondary education in Ealing between 1902 and 1944.other local primary sources consulted are to be found in the Ealing Reference Library and the Greater London Records Office and History Library. They include newspapers, the minutes of various education, borough and county committees, head teachers’ reports, the reports of H,M. school inspectors and the texts of various addresses and lectures given during the period by the personalities involved. National primary sources consulted are to be found in the Public Records Office. Attempts were made to contact former pupils and teachers who worked in the Ealing County Schools between 1913 and 194.4,. Those who contributed are listed in the bibliography

Harnessing nature's timekeeper: a history of the piezoelectric quartz crystal technological community (1880-1959)

In 1880, French brothers Jacques and Pierre Curie discovered the phenomenon of piezoelectricity in naturally occurring quartz crystal, sometimes referred to as 'nature's timekeeper.' By 1959, tens of millions of devices that exploited quartz crystal's piezoelectric character were being used in the technologies of radio, telephony, and electronic timekeeping. This dissertation analyzes the rapid rise of quartz crystal technology in the United States by looking at the growth of its knowledge base as reflected primarily in patents and journal articles. The major finding of this analysis is that the rise of quartz crystal technology cannot be fully understood by looking only at individuals, institutions, and technological factors. Rather, this work posits that the concept of technological community is indispensible in explaining rapid technological growth and diffusion that would otherwise seem inexplicable. In the late 1920s, and again in the early 1940s, the knowledge base of quartz crystal technology experienced exponential growth, partly due to U.S. government patronage and enlightened regulation. However, as this study shows, quartz crystal engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs could not have mobilized as quickly and effectively as they did unless a vibrant technological community already existed. Furthermore, the United States' ability to support such a thriving community depended in part on an early 20th century American culture that displayed an unmatched enthusiasm for democratic communications media, most especially broadcast radio and universal telephone service. Archival records, professional journal articles, government reports, manufacturer catalogs, and U.S. patents have been used to document this history of the quartz crystal technological community. This dissertation contributes to the literature on technological communities and their role in facilitating technological and ecomonic growth by showing that though such communities often form spontaneously, their growth may be nurtured and stimulated through enlightened government regulation. As such, this dissertation should be of interest to scholars in the fields of history of technology, business history, management studies, and public policy.Ph.D.Committee Chair: Usselman, Steven; Committee Member: Ceccagnoli, Marco; Committee Member: Giebelhaus, August; Committee Member: Hunt, William; Committee Member: Krige, Joh
