    Physical IC debug ─ backside approach and nanoscale challenge

    Physical analysis for IC functionality in submicron technologies requires access through chip backside. Based upon typical global backside preparation with 50–100 µm moderate silicon thickness remaining, a state of the art of the analysis techniques available for this purpose is presented and evaluated for functional analysis and layout pattern resolution potential. A circuit edit technique valid for nano technology ICs, is also presented that is based upon the formation of local trenches using the bottom of Shallow Trench Isolation (STI) as endpoint for Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling. As a derivative from this process, a locally ultra thin silicon device can be processed, creating a back surface as work bench for breakthrough applications of nanoscale analysis techniques to a fully functional circuit through chip backside. Several applications demonstrate the power and potential of this new approach

    Impaired Dendritic Expression and Plasticity Of H-Channels in the fmr1(-/Y) Mouse Model of Fragile X Syndrome

    Despite extensive research into both synaptic and morphological changes, surprisingly little is known about dendritic function in fragile X syndrome (FXS). We found that the dendritic input resistance of CA1 neurons was significantly lower in fmr1(-/y) versus wild-type mice. Consistent with elevated dendritic I-h, voltage sag, rebound, and resonance frequency were significantly higher and temporal summation was lower in the dendrites of fmr1(-/y) mice. Dendritic expression of the h-channel subunit HCN1, but not HCN2, was higher in the CA1 region of fmr1(-/y) mice. Interestingly, whereas mGluR-mediated persistent decreases in Ih occurred in both wildtype and fmr1(-/y) mice, persistent increases in Ih that occurred after LTP induction in wild-type mice were absent in fmr1(-/y) mice. Thus, chronic upregulation of dendritic Ih in conjunction with impairment of homeostatic h-channel plasticity represents a dendritic channelopathy in this model of mental retardation and may provide a mechanism for the cognitive impairment associated with FXS.FRAXAUniversity of Texas Austin Undergraduate Research FellowshipNational Institutes of Health Grant MH048432Center for Learning and Memor

    Flash-memories in Space Applications: Trends and Challenges

    Nowadays space applications are provided with a processing power absolutely overcoming the one available just a few years ago. Typical mission-critical space system applications include also the issue of solid-state recorder(s). Flash-memories are nonvolatile, shock-resistant and power-economic, but in turn have different drawbacks. A solid-state recorder for space applications should satisfy many different constraints especially because of the issues related to radiations: proper countermeasures are needed, together with EDAC and testing techniques in order to improve the dependability of the whole system. Different and quite often contrasting dimensions need to be explored during the design of a flash-memory based solid- state recorder. In particular, we shall explore the most important flash-memory design dimensions and trade-offs to tackle during the design of flash-based hard disks for space applications

    Light-Weight Techniques for Improving the Controllability and Efficiency of ISA-Level Fault Injection Tools

    ISA-level fault injection, i.e. the injection of bit-flip faults in Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) registers and main memory words, is widely used for studying the impact of transient and intermittent hardware faults. ISA-level fault injection tools can be characterized by different properties such as repeatability, observability, reachability, intrusiveness, efficiency and controllability. This paper presents two pre-injection analysis techniques that improve controllability and efficiency using object code analysis. To improve controllability, we propose a technique for identifying the type of data that is stored in a potential target location. This allows the user to selectively direct fault injections to addresses, data and/or control information. Experimental results show that the data type of 84-100% of the targets locations in 8 programs were successfully identified by this technique. The second technique improves efficiency by fault pruning, i.e., by avoiding injection of faults that is known a priori to be detected by the tested system. This technique leverage the fact that faults in certain bits in the program counter and the stack pointer are always detected by machine exceptions. We show that exclusion of these bits from the fault space could significantly prune the fault space and reduce the time it takes to conduct a fault injection campaign

    Working on Faith: A Faithful Response to Worker Abuse in New_Orleans

    When Hurricane Katrina battered New Orleans in August of 2005 and thousands were left stranded in the city, the winds exposed New Orleans' twin plagues of poverty and racism.New Orleans is the face of preventable exploitation. As this report illustrates, the DOL has been ill-equipped to deal with the scale and spread of employer lawlessness that has overtaken the Gulf Coast. Therefore, IWJ is creating the Interfaith Worker Justice Center of New Orleans (IWJ-NOLA) with the mission to respect work, rebuild community and restore hope. In tandem with the religious community and allies from organized labor, IWJ calls on the DOL to collaborate with IWJ-NOLA to empower workers, promote fair and legal labor practices, and work for good jobs for all workers, including those who have not been able to return to their city

    Functional and Crystal Structure Analysis of Active Site Adaptations of a Potent Anti-Angiogenic Human tRNA Synthetase

    SummaryHigher eukaryote tRNA synthetases have expanded functions that come from enlarged, more differentiated structures that were adapted to fit aminoacylation function. How those adaptations affect catalytic mechanisms is not known. Presented here is the structure of a catalytically active natural splice variant of human tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase (TrpRS) that is a potent angiostatic factor. This and related structures suggest that a eukaryote-specific N-terminal extension of the core enzyme changed substrate recognition by forming an active site cap. At the junction of the extension and core catalytic unit, an arginine is recruited to replace a missing landmark lysine almost 200 residues away. Mutagenesis, rapid kinetic, and substrate binding studies support the functional significance of the cap and arginine recruitment. Thus, the enzyme function of human TrpRS has switched more to the N terminus of the sequence. This switch has the effect of creating selective pressure to retain the N-terminal extension for functional expansion

    Guidelines on treatment of perinatal depression with antidepressants: An international review

    Objective: Several countries have developed Clinical Practice Guidelines regarding treatment of perinatal depressive symptoms and perinatal use of antidepressant. We aimed to compare guidelines to guide clinicians in best clinical practice. Methods: An extensive search in guideline databases, MEDLINE and PsycINFO was performed. When no guidelines were (publicly) available online, we contacted psychiatric-, obstetric-, perinatal- and mood disorder societies of all first world countries and the five largest second world countries. Only Clinical Practice Guidelines adhering to quality criteria of the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation instrument and including a systematic review of evidence were included. Data extraction focussed on recommendations regarding continuation or withdrawal of antidepressants and preferred treatment in newly depressed patients. Results: Our initial search resulted in 1094 articles. After first screening, 40 full-text articles were screened. Of these, 24 were excluded for not being an official Clinical Practice Guidelines. In total, 16 Clinical Practice Guidelines were included originating from 12 countries. Eight guidelines were perinatal specific and eight were general guidelines. Conclusion: During pregnancy, four guidelines advise to continue antidepressants, while there is a lack of evidence supporting this recommendation. Five guidelines do not specifically advise or discourage continuation. For new episodes, guidelines agree on psychotherapy (especially cognitive behavioural therapy) as initial treatment for mild to moderate depression and antidepressants for severe depression, with a preference for sertraline. Paroxetine is not preferred treatment for new episodes but switching antidepressants for ongoing treatment is discouraged (three guidelines). If mothers use antidepressants, observation of the neonate is generally recommended and breastfeeding encouraged
