Performance analysis of CCSDS path service

    Get PDF
A communications service, called Path Service, is currently being developed by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) to provide a mechanism for the efficient transmission of telemetry data from space to ground for complex space missions of the future. This is an important service, due to the large volumes of telemetry data that will be generated during these missions. A preliminary analysis of performance of Path Service is presented with respect to protocol-processing requirements and channel utilization

Accurate Modeling of the Siemens S7 SCADA Protocol for Intrusion Detection and Digital Forensics

    Get PDF
The Siemens S7 protocol is commonly used in SCADA systems for communications between a Human Machine Interface (HMI) and the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). This paper presents a model-based Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) designed for S7 networks. The approach is based on the key observation that S7 traffic to and from a specific PLC is highly periodic; as a result, each HMI-PLC channel can be modeled using its own unique Deterministic Finite Automaton (DFA). The resulting DFA-based IDS is very sensitive and is able to flag anomalies such as a message appearing out of its position in the normal sequence or a message referring to a single unexpected bit. The intrusion detection approach was evaluated on traffic from two production systems. Despite its high sensitivity, the system had a very low false positive rate - over 99.82% of the traffic was identified as normal

Information Technology and Systems - II:Server Administration Networks

    Get PDF
A majority of IS graduates (56% in one recent survey] are involved in server administration, network administration and IS security work. An important recent innovation in these areas is the deployment of separate networks dedicated to server administration and related tasks, combining the cost and productivity advantages of remote administration with risk levels comparable to console-based administrative access. Remote server administration is a previously undocumented artisanal tradition that evolved in scientific and technical network environments, and is now becoming applicable to an increasing range of business networks. This tutorial article provides an overview of current server administration network architectures, and of the software, workstation, and user interface technologies associated with remote server administration

OSI in the NASA science internet: An analysis

    Get PDF
The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocol suite is a result of a world-wide effort to develop international standards for networking. OSI is formalized through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The goal of OSI is to provide interoperability between network products without relying on one particular vendor, and to do so on a multinational basis. The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed a Government OSI Profile (GOSIP) that specified a subset of the OSI protocols as a Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS 146). GOSIP compatibility has been adopted as the direction for all U.S. government networks. OSI is extremely diverse, and therefore adherence to a profile will facilitate interoperability within OSI networks. All major computer vendors have indicated current or future support of GOSIP-compliant OSI protocols in their products. The NASA Science Internet (NSI) is an operational network, serving user requirements under NASA's Office of Space Science and Applications. NSI consists of the Space Physics Analysis Network (SPAN) that uses the DECnet protocols and the NASA Science Network (NSN) that uses TCP/IP protocols. The NSI Project Office is currently working on an OSI integration analysis and strategy. A long-term goal is to integrate SPAN and NSN into one unified network service, using a full OSI protocol suite, which will support the OSSA user community

This thesis mainly deals with the study of communication protocols between process control systems of company Siemens and their superstructural systems (SCADA/HMI) the Ethernet interface. This is a management systems, which are mainly used by Aucon s.r.o. in practice. It also deals with OPC servers, and their use with client applications. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical analysis of certain types of inter-processcommunication in Windows. From the simple one to the model COM, which is the basis of the OPC technology. Practical part realize implementation of a simple programming interface, providing communications with equipment Siemens Simatic S7. This is realized by C++ with using WinSock2 a IPHlpApi libraries. This interface can be used at programming client application.

In the first part of this work, there is analysis of the industrial proprietary protocol S7 by Siemens. The analysis is performed by Wireshark between the programmable controller S7-1200 and Simatic NET OPC server. This protocol is based on other protocols whose proposals and solutions are completely or at least partially described in this work. On the basis of this information is created a communication library in C ++, which allows the transmission of variables. This library is subsequently used in the implementation of the communication server through which one can easily access variables in the programmable machine with a text protocol.
