Integration of unidirectional technologies into wireless back-haul architecture

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Docter of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Back-haul infrastructures of today's wireless operators must support the triple-play services demanded by the market or regulatory bodies. To cope with increasing capacity demand, the EU FP7 project CARMEN has developed a cost-effective heterogeneous multi-radio wireless back-haul architecture, which may also leverage the native multicast capabilities of broadcast technologies such as DVB-T to off-load high-bandwidth broadcast content delivery. However, the integration of such unidirectional technologies into a packet-switched architecture requires careful considerations. The contribution of this thesis is the investigation, design and evaluation of protocols and mechanisms facilitating the integration of such unidirectional technologies into the wireless back-haul architecture so that they can be configured and utilized by the spectrum and capacity optimization modules. This integration mainly concerns the control plane and, in particular, the aspects related to resource and capability descriptions, neighborhood, link and Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) Label-Switched Path (LSP) monitoring, unicast and multicast LSP signalling as well as topology forming and maintenance. During the course of this study we have analyzed the problem space, proposed solutions to the resulting research questions and evaluated our approach. Our results show that the now Unidirectional Technology (UDT)-aware architecture can readily consider Unidirectional Technologies (UDTs) to distribute, for example, broadcast content

Proceedings of the Third Edition of the Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services (WONS 2006)

From the Open Call submissions we accepted 16 papers as full papers (up to 12 pages) and 8 papers as short papers (up to 6 pages). All the accepted papers will be presented orally in the Workshop sessions. More precisely, the selected papers have been organized in 7 session: Channel access and scheduling, Energy-aware Protocols, QoS in Mobile Ad-Hoc networks, Multihop Performance Issues, Wireless Internet, Applications and finally Security Issues. The papers (and authors) come from all parts of the world, confirming the international stature of this Workshop. The majority of the contributions are from Europe (France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, UK). However, a significant number is from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Iran, Korea and USA. The proceedings also include two invited papers. We take this opportunity to thank all the authors who submitted their papers to WONS 2006. You helped make this event again a success

Mitigate denial of service attacks in mobile ad-hoc networks

Wireless networks are proven to be more acceptable by users compared with wired networks for many reasons, namely the ease of setup, reduction in running cost, and ease of use in different situations such as disasters recovery. A Mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) is as an example of wireless networks. MANET consists of a group of hosts called nodes which can communicate freely via wireless links. MANET is a dynamic topology, self-configured, non-fixed infrastructure, and does not have any central administration that controls all nodes among the network. Every device, used in day-to-day living, is assumed to be a network device, and it is managed using Internet Protocols (IP). Information on every electronic device is collected using infrared sensors, voice or video sensors, Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID), etc. The new wireless networks and communications paradigm known as Internet of Things (IoT) is introduced which refers to the range of multiple interconnected devices which communicate and exchange data between one another. MANET becomes prone to many attacks mainly due to its specifications and challenges such as limited bandwidth, nodes mobility and limited energy. This research study focuses specifically on detecting Denial of Service attack (DoS) in MANET. The main purpose of DoS attack is to deprive legitimate users from using their authenticated services such as network resources. Thus, the network performance would degrade and exhaust the network resources such as computing power and bandwidth considerably which lead the network to be deteriorated. Therefore, this research aims to detect DoS attacks in both Single MANET (SM) and Multi MANETs (MM). A novel Monitoring, Detection, and Rehabilitation (MrDR) method is proposed in order to detect DoS attack in MANET. The proposed method is incorporating trust concept between nodes. Trust value is calculated in each node to decide whether the node is trusted or not. To address the problem when two or more MANETs merge to become one big MANET, the novel technique of Merging Using MrDR (MUMrDR) is also applied to detect DoS attack. As the mobility of nodes in MANET, the chance of MANETs merge or partition occurs. Both centralised and decentralised trust concepts are used to deal with IP address conflict and the merging process is completed by applying the MUMrDR method to detect DoS attacks in MM. The simulation results validate the effectiveness in the proposed method to detect different DoS attacks in both SM and MM
