    Sound and Image: Experimental Music and the Popular Horror Film (1960 to the present day)

    This study investigates the functional relationship between sound and image within a particular generic and historical context - experimental music and the popular horror film, from 1960 to the present day. The study responds to a significant gap in the literature that requires sustained and in-depth academic attention. Despite recent expansion, the field of film music studies has yet to deal with alternative functional models that challenge the overall applicability of the dominant narrative-based theoretical framework. Recent scholarship suggests that a proper theoretical comprehension of horror film music's primary function requires a refocusing of the hermeneutic emphasis upon dimensions of the cinematic (or audio-visual) sign that can be described as `nonrepresentational.' This study applies a relatively new psychoanalytical framework to explain how the post-1960 horror film deploys these non-representational elements, incorporating them into an overall cinematic strategy which indexes the transition towards a post-classical cinematic aesthetics. More specifically, this study assessesju st how efficiently experimental musical styles and techniques aid the reconfiguration of the syntactical components of horror film to these very ends. Using three case study directors, this study focuses upon major developments in musical style and cinematic technology, describing the ways in which these have facilitated this cinematic strategy. A particularly useful contribution to the knowledge is made here via the study's explanation as to how the particular psychoanalytical framework applied can illuminate the functional and theoretical relationships often posited between both the formal and subjective dimensions of the post-1960 horror film experience. The conclusions reached suggest this theoretical explication of post-1960 horror film music's function can now take its place alongside previously dominant narrative frameworks. Given the influential status of the horror genre, the findings of this investigation prove useful for comprehending the increasing heterogeneity of postclassical film music in general, and the functional relationship(s) of sound and image in particular

    Enhanced cyberspace defense with real-time distributed systems using covert channel publish-subscribe broker pattern communications

    In this thesis, we propose a novel cyberspace defense solution to the growing sophistication of threats facing networks within the Department of Defense. Current network defense strategies, including traditional intrusion detection and firewall-based perimeter defenses, are ineffective against increasingly sophisticated social engineering attacks such as spear-phishing which exploit individuals with targeted information. These asymmetric attacks are able to bypass current network defense technologies allowing adversaries extended and often unrestricted access to portions of the enterprise. Network defense strategies are hampered by solutions favoring network-centric designs which disregard the security requirements of the specific data and information on the networks. Our solution leverages specific technology characteristics from traditional network defense systems and real-time distributed systems using publish-subscribe broker patterns to form the foundation of a full-spectrum cyber operations capability. Building on this foundation, we present the addition of covert channel communications within the distributed systems framework to protect sensitive Command and Control and Battle Management messaging from adversary intercept and exploitation.     Biofeedback interventions

    Biofeedback interventions use instrumentation to allow the speaker to visualise and modify their own speech production in real-time. This chapter focuses on three types of biofeedback used for treating children with speech disorders: Electropalatography (EPG), ultrasound, and acoustic biofeedback. EPG and ultrasound show real time articulatory movements while acoustic biofeedback uses either a spectrogram or linear predictive coding spectrum to distinguish speech sounds. All of the techniques are incorporated into a motor-learning paradigm where the visual display provides specific information about the nature of the articulatory or acoustic parameters required to produce accurate speech. Biofeedback is normally used to help school-aged children and adults with a wide variety of different types of speech sound disorders acquire lingual speech sounds which they have not acquired in the course of normal development. There is an emerging evidence base, currently consisting primarily of a large number of case studies and single case experimental designs, pointing towards the effectiveness of biofeedback

    Seeing the music – portrayals of authenticity in British period film music

    Film music offers a diversity of variation in filmic portrayals. This thesis investigates the role film music plays in portrayals of authenticity in film. The material was chosen from British period films produced within the last 30 years, of which 13 films were analysed. The thesis also set out to test Kassabian’s Identification Tracking theoretical model (2001) that enables semiotic musical analysis by categorising commonalities according to respective codification practices, otherwise known as perceptions. Authenticity was found and discussed in themes of auteurism, production, historicity, realism, subject positions and identification. These authenticity portrayals occurred across different levels of film perception, not only at the point of text release. The thesis found that music in film can effectively be analysed using the semiotic analysis style. It also elucidated that authenticity carries meaning through codification practices of perceivers, and that this is established practice in the chosen focus of British period film. The thesis reiterates the need for more sensorial approaches to analysis of film that is otherwise limited by the sight-biased practice of the popular film discourse
