PersoNER: Persian named-entity recognition

© 1963-2018 ACL. Named-Entity Recognition (NER) is still a challenging task for languages with low digital resources. The main difficulties arise from the scarcity of annotated corpora and the consequent problematic training of an effective NER pipeline. To abridge this gap, in this paper we target the Persian language that is spoken by a population of over a hundred million people world-wide. We first present and provide ArmanPerosNERCorpus, the first manually-annotated Persian NER corpus. Then, we introduce PersoNER, an NER pipeline for Persian that leverages a word embedding and a sequential max-margin classifier. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is capable of achieving interesting MUC7 and CoNNL scores while outperforming two alternatives based on a CRF and a recurrent neural network

Negative vaccine voices in Swedish social media

Vaccinations are one of the most significant interventions to public health, but vaccine hesitancy creates concerns for a portion of the population in many countries, including Sweden. Since discussions on vaccine hesitancy are often taken on social networking sites, data from Swedish social media are used to study and quantify the sentiment among the discussants on the vaccination-or-not topic during phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. Out of all the posts analyzed a majority showed a stronger negative sentiment, prevailing throughout the whole of the examined period, with some spikes or jumps due to the occurrence of certain vaccine-related events distinguishable in the results. Sentiment analysis can be a valuable tool to track public opinions regarding the use, efficacy, safety, and importance of vaccination

Speech Recognition

Chapters in the first part of the book cover all the essential speech processing techniques for building robust, automatic speech recognition systems: the representation for speech signals and the methods for speech-features extraction, acoustic and language modeling, efficient algorithms for searching the hypothesis space, and multimodal approaches to speech recognition. The last part of the book is devoted to other speech processing applications that can use the information from automatic speech recognition for speaker identification and tracking, for prosody modeling in emotion-detection systems and in other speech processing applications that are able to operate in real-world environments, like mobile communication services and smart homes

Different Approaches to Interpreting Studies : Diplomski rad

The present thesis contains an extensive overview of different methodological and theoretical approaches to the field of interpreting studies. At the beginning, a distinction between interpreting and translation is made, followed by a brief history of interpreting practice. The basic concepts, models and assumptions concerning the study of interpreting are presented in the middle section, showing how the role of the interpreter and the attitude towards interpreting has changed over the course of years. In the final part, studies made by scholars from different disciplinary fields are briefly presented, proving that simultaneous interpreting is a complex process which requires careful and detailed study from various angles.Diplomski rad sadrži pregled različitih teorijskih i metodoloških pristupa u istraživanju usmenog prevođenja. U početnom dijelu definira se razlika između usmenog i pismenog prevođenja, a slijedi kratak povijesni razvoj profesije usmenog prevođenja. U središnjem dijelu opisani su osnovni koncepti, modeli i pretpostavke o istraživanju usmenog prevođenja, pokazujući kako se uloga prevoditelja i stav prema usmenom prevođenju mijenjao kroz godine. U završnom su poglavlju opisana istraživanja usmenog prevođenja provedena u suradnji sa istraživačima iz drugih disciplina, što dokazuje da je simultano prevođenje složen proces koji je potrebno pažljivo i detaljno proučavati sa različitih stajališta

Proceedings of the VIIth GSCP International Conference

The 7th International Conference of the Gruppo di Studi sulla Comunicazione Parlata, dedicated to the memory of Claire Blanche-Benveniste, chose as its main theme Speech and Corpora. The wide international origin of the 235 authors from 21 countries and 95 institutions led to papers on many different languages. The 89 papers of this volume reflect the themes of the conference: spoken corpora compilation and annotation, with the technological connected fields; the relation between prosody and pragmatics; speech pathologies; and different papers on phonetics, speech and linguistic analysis, pragmatics and sociolinguistics.
