    The acquisition of asserted, presupposed, and pragmatically implied exhaustivity in Hungarian

    The paper reports on three experiments in which the exhaustive interpretation of sentences containing the focus particle csak ‘only’, structural focus constructions, and sentences with neutral intonation and word order were investigated. The results obtained not only reveal the developmental trajectory of the adult-like comprehension of each sentence type, but also contribute to the discussion concerning the semantic or pragmatic nature of their exhaustive meaning component. As the three construction types were judged in different ways on a three-point scale, the findings appear to support the hypothesis according to which exhaustivity is part of the asserted content of sentences with csak ‘only’, it is context-independently presupposed in the case of structural focus, and in certain contexts it can arise as an implicature in the case of neutral utterances, as well

    Information structure in linguistic theory and in speech production : validation of a cross-linguistic data set

    The aim of this paper is to validate a dataset collected by means of production experiments which are part of the Questionnaire on Information Structure. The experiments generate a range of information structure contexts that have been observed in the literature to induce specific constructions. This paper compares the speech production results from a subset of these experiments with specific claims about the reflexes of information structure in four different languages. The results allow us to evaluate and in most cases validate the efficacy of our elicitation paradigms, to identify potentially fruitful avenues of future research, and to highlight issues involved in interpreting speech production data of this kind

    Preschoolers' interpretation of the focus particle csak 'only' in Hungarian

    The paper reports on two experiments in which I tested whether Hungarian children can process the exhaustivity of sentences containing the focus particle csak 'only'. In line with previous studies concerning the interpretation of focus particles in different languages, I found that preschoolers at around the age of 5 are able to access the exhaustive meaning component of these constructions, though they are occasionally uncertain about which constituent they should associate this reading with. Interestingly, contrary to German-speaking children, they tend to expect the subject to be the focused constituent

    In the present work we discuss the syntactic behaviour of the Romanian focus particle doar. Through out the paper we will argue for a unitary analysis of doar as a contrastive focus marker attempting to provide a syntactic account which will explain the effects that doar has on sentence interpretation and in particular its interaction with negation. We will claim that the traditional notion of contrastive focus encapsulates in fact two different features checked in two different positions of the functional domain

    It's not what you expected! The surprising nature of cleft alternatives in French and English

    While much prior literature on the meaning of clefts—such as the English form “it is X who Z-ed”—concentrates on the nature and status of the exhaustivity inference (“nobody/nothing other than X Z”), we report on experiments examining the role of the doxastic status of alternatives on the naturalness of c'est-clefts in French and it-clefts in English. Specifically, we study the hypothesis that clefts indicate a conflict with a doxastic commitment held by some discourse participant. Results from naturalness tasks suggest that clefts are improved by a property we term “contrariness” (along the lines of Zimmermann, 2008). This property has a gradient effect on felicity judgments: the more strongly interlocutors appear committed to an apparently false notion, the better it is to repudiate them with a cleft.Published versio

    This paper is a preliminary comparative study of the relation between word order and information structure in three Null Subject Languages ((NSLs) Spanish, Italian and Greek). The aim is twofold: first I seek to examine the differences and the similarities among these languages in this domain of their syntax.
