Grasping bulky objects with two anthropomorphic hands

We use objects modeled as point clouds obtained from a sensor camera or from a CAD model. We then process the point clouds dividing them into two set of slices where we look for sets of triplets of points. Each triplet must accomplish some physical conditions based on the structure of the hands. Then, the triplets of points from each set of slices are evaluated to find a combination that satisfies the force closure condition (FC). Once one valid couple of triplets have been found the inverse kinematics of the system is computed in order to know if the corresponding points are reachable by the hands, if so, motion planning and a collision check are performed to asses if the final grasp configuration of the system is suitable. Learning and Acting in Peripersonal Space: Moving, Reaching, and Grasping
The young infant explores its body, its sensorimotor system, and the
immediately accessible parts of its environment, over the course of a few
months creating a model of peripersonal space useful for reaching and grasping
objects around it. Drawing on constraints from the empirical literature on
infant behavior, we present a preliminary computational model of this learning
process, implemented and evaluated on a physical robot. The learning agent
explores the relationship between the configuration space of the arm, sensing
joint angles through proprioception, and its visual perceptions of the hand and
grippers. The resulting knowledge is represented as the peripersonal space
(PPS) graph, where nodes represent states of the arm, edges represent safe
movements, and paths represent safe trajectories from one pose to another. In
our model, the learning process is driven by intrinsic motivation. When
repeatedly performing an action, the agent learns the typical result, but also
detects unusual outcomes, and is motivated to learn how to make those unusual
results reliable. Arm motions typically leave the static background unchanged,
but occasionally bump an object, changing its static position. The reach action
is learned as a reliable way to bump and move an object in the environment.
Similarly, once a reliable reach action is learned, it typically makes a
quasi-static change in the environment, moving an object from one static
position to another. The unusual outcome is that the object is accidentally
grasped (thanks to the innate Palmar reflex), and thereafter moves dynamically
with the hand. Learning to make grasps reliable is more complex than for
reaches, but we demonstrate significant progress. Our current results are steps
toward autonomous sensorimotor learning of motion, reaching, and grasping in
peripersonal space, based on unguided exploration and intrinsic motivation.Comment: 35 pages, 13 figure
Towards Advanced Robotic Manipulations for Nuclear Decommissioning
Despite enormous remote handling requirements, remarkably very few robots are being used by the nuclear industry. Most of the remote handling tasks are still performed manually, using conventional mechanical master‐slave devices. The few robotic manipulators deployed are directly tele‐operated in rudimentary ways, with almost no autonomy or even a pre‐programmed motion. In addition, majority of these robots are under‐sensored (i.e. with no proprioception), which prevents them to use for automatic tasks. In this context, primarily this chapter discusses the human operator performance in accomplishing heavy‐duty remote handling tasks in hazardous environments such as nuclear decommissioning. Multiple factors are evaluated to analyse the human operators’ performance and workload. Also, direct human tele‐operation is compared against human‐supervised semi‐autonomous control exploiting computer vision. Secondarily, a vision‐guided solution towards enabling advanced control and automating the under‐sensored robots is presented. Maintaining the coherence with real nuclear scenario, the experiments are conducted in the lab environment and results are discussed
The Anthropomorphic Hand Assessment Protocol (AHAP)
The progress in the development of anthropomorphic hands for robotic and prosthetic applications has not been followed by a parallel development of objective methods to evaluate their performance. The need for benchmarking in grasping research has been recognized by the robotics community as an important topic. In this study we present the Anthropomorphic Hand Assessment Protocol (AHAP) to address this need by providing a measure for quantifying the grasping ability of artificial hands and comparing hand designs. To this end, the AHAP uses 25 objects from the publicly available Yale-CMU-Berkeley Object and Model Set thereby enabling replicability. It is composed of 26 postures/tasks involving grasping with the eight most relevant human grasp types and two non-grasping postures. The AHAP allows to quantify the anthropomorphism and functionality of artificial hands through a numerical Grasping Ability Score (GAS). The AHAP was tested with different hands, the first version of the hand of the humanoid robot ARMAR-6 with three different configurations resulting from attachment of pads to fingertips and palm as well as the two versions of the KIT Prosthetic Hand. The benchmark was used to demonstrate the improvements of these hands in aspects like the grasping surface, the grasp force and the finger kinematics. The reliability, consistency and responsiveness of the benchmark have been statistically analyzed, indicating that the AHAP is a powerful tool for evaluating and comparing different artificial hand designs
FRoGGeR: Fast Robust Grasp Generation via the Min-Weight Metric
Many approaches to grasp synthesis optimize analytic quality metrics that
measure grasp robustness based on finger placements and local surface geometry.
However, generating feasible dexterous grasps by optimizing these metrics is
slow, often taking minutes. To address this issue, this paper presents FRoGGeR:
a method that quickly generates robust precision grasps using the min-weight
metric, a novel, almost-everywhere differentiable approximation of the
classical epsilon grasp metric. The min-weight metric is simple and
interpretable, provides a reasonable measure of grasp robustness, and admits
numerically efficient gradients for smooth optimization. We leverage these
properties to rapidly synthesize collision-free robust grasps - typically in
less than a second. FRoGGeR can refine the candidate grasps generated by other
methods (heuristic, data-driven, etc.) and is compatible with many object
representations (SDFs, meshes, etc.). We study FRoGGeR's performance on over 40
objects drawn from the YCB dataset, outperforming a competitive baseline in
computation time, feasibility rate of grasp synthesis, and picking success in
simulation. We conclude that FRoGGeR is fast: it has a median synthesis time of
