    Object Manipulation in Virtual Reality Under Increasing Levels of Translational Gain

    Room-scale Virtual Reality (VR) has become an affordable consumer reality, with applications ranging from entertainment to productivity. However, the limited physical space available for room-scale VR in the typical home or office environment poses a significant problem. To solve this, physical spaces can be extended by amplifying the mapping of physical to virtual movement (translational gain). Although amplified movement has been used since the earliest days of VR, little is known about how it influences reach-based interactions with virtual objects, now a standard feature of consumer VR. Consequently, this paper explores the picking and placing of virtual objects in VR for the first time, with translational gains of between 1x (a one-to-one mapping of a 3.5m*3.5m virtual space to the same sized physical space) and 3x (10.5m*10.5m virtual mapped to 3.5m*3.5m physical). Results show that reaching accuracy is maintained for up to 2x gain, however going beyond this diminishes accuracy and increases simulator sickness and perceived workload. We suggest gain levels of 1.5x to 1.75x can be utilized without compromising the usability of a VR task, significantly expanding the bounds of interactive room-scale VR

    Development of ADOCS controllers and control laws. Volume 2: Literature review and preliminary analysis

    The Advanced Cockpit Controls/Advanced Flight Control System (ACC/AFCS) study was conducted by the Boeing Vertol Company as part of the Army's Advanced Digital/Optical Control System (ADOCS) program. Specifically, the ACC/AFCS investigation was aimed at developing the flight control laws for the ADOCS demonstrator aircraft which will provide satisfactory handling qualities for an attack helicopter mission. The three major elements of design considered are as follows: Pilot's integrated Side-Stick Controller (SSC) -- Number of axes controlled; force/displacement characteristics; ergonomic design. Stability and Control Augmentation System (SCAS)--Digital flight control laws for the various mission phases; SCAS mode switching logic. Pilot's Displays--For night/adverse weather conditions, the dynamics of the superimposed symbology presented to the pilot in a format similar to the Advanced Attack Helicopter (AAH) Pilot Night Vision System (PNVS) for each mission phase as a function of ACAS characteristics; display mode switching logic. Findings from the literature review and the analysis and synthesis of desired control laws are reported in Volume 2. Conclusions drawn from pilot rating data and commentary were used to formulate recommendations for the ADOCS demonstrator flight control system design. The ACC/AFCS simulation data also provide an extensive data base to aid the development of advanced flight control system design for future V/STOL aircraft

    Optimizations and applications in head-mounted video-based eye tracking

    Video-based eye tracking techniques have become increasingly attractive in many research fields, such as visual perception and human-computer interface design. The technique primarily relies on the positional difference between the center of the eye\u27s pupil and the first-surface reflection at the cornea, the corneal reflection (CR). This difference vector is mapped to determine an observer\u27s point of regard (POR). In current head-mounted video-based eye trackers, the systems are limited in several aspects, such as inadequate measurement range and misdetection of eye features (pupil and CR). This research first proposes a new `structured illumination\u27 configuration, using multiple IREDs to illuminate the eye, to ensure that eye positions can still be tracked even during extreme eye movements (up to ±45° horizontally and ±25° vertically). Then eye features are detected by a two-stage processing approach. First, potential CRs and the pupil are isolated based on statistical information in an eye image. Second, genuine CRs are distinguished by a novel CR location prediction technique based on the well-correlated relationship between the offset of the pupil and that of the CR. The optical relationship of the pupil and CR offsets derived in this thesis can be applied to two typical illumination configurations - collimated and near-source ones- in the video-based eye tracking system. The relationships from the optical derivation and that from an experimental measurement match well. Two application studies, smooth pursuit dynamics in controlled static (laboratory) and unconstrained vibrating (car) environments were conducted. In the first study, the extended stimuli (color photographs subtending 2° and 17°, respectively) were found to enhance smooth pursuit movements induced by realistic images, and the eye velocity for tracking a small dot (subtending \u3c0.1°) was saturated at about 64 deg/sec while the saturation velocity occurred at higher velocities for the extended images. The difference in gain due to target size was significant between dot and the two extended stimuli, while no statistical difference existed between the two extended stimuli. In the second study, twovisual stimuli same as in the first study were used. The visual performance was impaired dramatically due to the whole body motion in the car, even in the tracking of a slowly moving target (2 deg/sec); the eye was found not able to perform a pursuit task as smooth as in the static environment though the unconstrained head motion in the unstable condition was supposed to enhance the visual performance

Data required, available options, user responsibilities, and occupancy procedures are given in a form that facilitates the initial communication required with the NASA operations' group

    Goggle Augmented Imaging and Navigation System for Fluorescence-Guided Surgery

    Surgery remains the only curative option for most solid tumors. The standard-of-care usually involves tumor resection and sentinel lymph node biopsy for cancer staging. Surgeons rely on their vision and touch to distinguish healthy from cancer tissue during surgery, often leading to incomplete tumor resection that necessitates repeat surgery. Sentinel lymph node biopsy by conventional radioactive tracking exposes patients and caregivers to ionizing radiation, while blue dye tracking stains the tissue highlighting only superficial lymph nodes. Improper identification of sentinel lymph nodes may misdiagnose the stage of the cancer. Therefore there is a clinical need for accurate intraoperative tumor and sentinel lymph node visualization. Conventional imaging modalities such as x-ray computed tomography, positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound are excellent for preoperative cancer diagnosis and surgical planning. However, they are not suitable for intraoperative use, due to bulky complicated hardware, high cost, non-real-time imaging, severe restrictions to the surgical workflow and lack of sufficient resolution for tumor boundary assessment. This has propelled interest in fluorescence-guided surgery, due to availability of simple hardware that can achieve real-time, high resolution and sensitive imaging. Near-infrared fluorescence imaging is of particular interest due to low background absorbance by photoactive biomolecules, enabling thick tissue assessment. As a result several near-infrared fluorescence-guided surgery systems have been developed. However, they are limited by bulky hardware, disruptive information display and non-matched field of view to the user. To address these limitations we have developed a compact, light-weight and wearable goggle augmented imaging and navigation system (GAINS). It detects the near-infrared fluorescence from a tumor accumulated contrast agent, along with the normal color view and displays accurately aligned, color-fluorescence images via a head-mounted display worn by the surgeon, in real-time. GAINS is a platform technology and capable of very sensitive fluorescence detection. Image display options include both video see-through and optical see-through head-mounted displays for high-contrast image guidance as well as direct visual access to the surgical bed. Image capture options from large field of view camera as well high magnification handheld microscope, ensures macroscopic as well as microscopic assessment of the tumor bed. Aided by tumor targeted near-infrared contrast agents, GAINS guided complete tumor resection in subcutaneous, metastatic and spontaneous mouse models of cancer with high sensitivity and specificity, in real-time. Using a clinically-approved near-infrared contrast agent, GAINS provided real-time image guidance for accurate visualization of lymph nodes in a porcine model and sentinel lymph nodes in human breast cancer and melanoma patients with high sensitivity. This work has addressed issues that have limited clinical adoption of fluorescence-guided surgery and paved the way for research into developing this approach towards standard-of-care practice that can potentially improve surgical outcomes in cancer

    LoCoMoTe – a framework for classification of natural locomotion in VR by task, technique and modality

    Virtual reality (VR) research has provided overviews of locomotion techniques, how they work, their strengths and overall user experience. Considerable research has investigated new methodologies, particularly machine learning to develop redirection algorithms. To best support the development of redirection algorithms through machine learning, we must understand how best to replicate human navigation and behaviour in VR, which can be supported by the accumulation of results produced through live-user experiments. However, it can be difficult to identify, select and compare relevant research without a pre-existing framework in an ever-growing research field. Therefore, this work aimed to facilitate the ongoing structuring and comparison of the VR-based natural walking literature by providing a standardised framework for researchers to utilise. We applied thematic analysis to study methodology descriptions from 140 VR-based papers that contained live-user experiments. From this analysis, we developed the LoCoMoTe framework with three themes: navigational decisions, technique implementation, and modalities. The LoCoMoTe framework provides a standardised approach to structuring and comparing experimental conditions. The framework should be continually updated to categorise and systematise knowledge and aid in identifying research gaps and discussions

    Otolith function in human subjects: Perception of motion, reflex eye movements and vision during linear interaural acceleration

    The thesis investigates how the otolith organs of the vestibular system, specifically the utricles, assist motion perception and aid visual stabilization, during translational lateral whole-body acceleration. It was found that high gradients of acceleration facilitate the detection of motion and that, for low acceleration gradients, motion perception in normal subjects relies on a 'velocity' threshold detection process. Experiments in patients without vestibular function indicated that, for the stimuli employed, the somatosensory system could be as sensitive to linear motion as the vestibular system. The interaction between the horizontal linear vestibulo-ocular reflex (LVOR) and visual context was characterized in the following experiments. Subjects were accelerated transiently in darkness, or while viewing earth-fixed or head-fixed targets. From onset, the eye velocity response to head translation was enhanced with acceleration level and target proximity, but was only slightly reduced by fixation of head-fixed targets. This suggested that the gain of the LVOR pathway was adjusted before or immediately after motion onset by a parameter depending mainly on viewing distance and less on the knowledge of probable relative target motion. For high relative target velocities, LVORs improved ocular fixation over what would be attained by pursuit alone, although fully compensatory eye movements were not always produced. The LVORs of patients who underwent unilateral vestibular deafferentation suggested that the utricular area generating transaural LVORs is the macular region lateral to the striola. Psychophysical experiments based on a reading task established the functional role of the LVOR for stabilising vision during high-frequency sinusoidal whole-body acceleration. Unlike normal subjects, visual acuity in patients without vestibular function was not better during self-motion than during display oscillation. Finally, the LVOR interaction with canal-ocular reflexes was studied using isolated and combined translational/rotational stimuli. The results showed that, shortly after motion onset, canal stimulation enhances the LVOR evoked by head translation
