Stigmergy-based modeling to discover urban activity patterns from positioning data
Positioning data offer a remarkable source of information to analyze crowds
urban dynamics. However, discovering urban activity patterns from the emergent
behavior of crowds involves complex system modeling. An alternative approach is
to adopt computational techniques belonging to the emergent paradigm, which
enables self-organization of data and allows adaptive analysis. Specifically,
our approach is based on stigmergy. By using stigmergy each sample position is
associated with a digital pheromone deposit, which progressively evaporates and
aggregates with other deposits according to their spatiotemporal proximity.
Based on this principle, we exploit positioning data to identify high density
areas (hotspots) and characterize their activity over time. This
characterization allows the comparison of dynamics occurring in different days,
providing a similarity measure exploitable by clustering techniques. Thus, we
cluster days according to their activity behavior, discovering unexpected urban
activity patterns. As a case study, we analyze taxi traces in New York City

A novel Big Data analytics and intelligent technique to predict driver's intent
Modern age offers a great potential for automatically predicting the driver's intent through the increasing miniaturization of computing technologies, rapid advancements in communication technologies and continuous connectivity of heterogeneous smart objects. Inside the cabin and engine of modern cars, dedicated computer systems need to possess the ability to exploit the wealth of information generated by heterogeneous data sources with different contextual and conceptual representations. Processing and utilizing this diverse and voluminous data, involves many challenges concerning the design of the computational technique used to perform this task. In this paper, we investigate the various data sources available in the car and the surrounding environment, which can be utilized as inputs in order to predict driver's intent and behavior. As part of investigating these potential data sources, we conducted experiments on e-calendars for a large number of employees, and have reviewed a number of available geo referencing systems. Through the results of a statistical analysis and by computing location recognition accuracy results, we explored in detail the potential utilization of calendar location data to detect the driver's intentions. In order to exploit the numerous diverse data inputs available in modern vehicles, we investigate the suitability of different Computational Intelligence (CI) techniques, and propose a novel fuzzy computational modelling methodology. Finally, we outline the impact of applying advanced CI and Big Data analytics techniques in modern vehicles on the driver and society in general, and discuss ethical and legal issues arising from the deployment of intelligent self-learning cars

Fuzzy Recommendations in Marketing Campaigns
The population in Sweden is growing rapidly due to immigration. In this
light, the issue of infrastructure upgrades to provide telecommunication
services is of importance. New antennas can be installed at hot spots of user
demand, which will require an investment, and/or the clientele expansion can be
carried out in a planned manner to promote the exploitation of the
infrastructure in the less loaded geographical zones. In this paper, we explore
the second alternative. Informally speaking, the term Infrastructure-Stressing
describes a user who stays in the zones of high demand, which are prone to
produce service failures, if further loaded. We have studied the
Infrastructure-Stressing population in the light of their correlation with
geo-demographic segments. This is motivated by the fact that specific
geo-demographic segments can be targeted via marketing campaigns. Fuzzy logic
is applied to create an interface between big data, numeric methods for

A Probabilistic Embedding Clustering Method for Urban Structure Detection
Urban structure detection is a basic task in urban geography. Clustering is a
core technology to detect the patterns of urban spatial structure, urban
functional region, and so on. In big data era, diverse urban sensing datasets
recording information like human behaviour and human social activity, suffer
from complexity in high dimension and high noise. And unfortunately, the
state-of-the-art clustering methods does not handle the problem with high
dimension and high noise issues concurrently. In this paper, a probabilistic
embedding clustering method is proposed. Firstly, we come up with a
Probabilistic Embedding Model (PEM) to find latent features from high
dimensional urban sensing data by learning via probabilistic model. By latent
features, we could catch essential features hidden in high dimensional data
known as patterns; with the probabilistic model, we can also reduce uncertainty
caused by high noise. Secondly, through tuning the parameters, our model could
discover two kinds of urban structure, the homophily and structural
equivalence, which means communities with intensive interaction or in the same
roles in urban structure. We evaluated the performance of our model by
conducting experiments on real-world data and experiments with real data in
Shanghai (China) proved that our method could discover two kinds of urban
structure, the homophily and structural equivalence, which means clustering

A Short Survey on Data Clustering Algorithms
With rapidly increasing data, clustering algorithms are important tools for
data analytics in modern research. They have been successfully applied to a
wide range of domains; for instance, bioinformatics, speech recognition, and
financial analysis. Formally speaking, given a set of data instances, a
clustering algorithm is expected to divide the set of data instances into the
subsets which maximize the intra-subset similarity and inter-subset
dissimilarity, where a similarity measure is defined beforehand. In this work,
the state-of-the-arts clustering algorithms are reviewed from design concept to
methodology; Different clustering paradigms are discussed. Advanced clustering
algorithms are also discussed. After that, the existing clustering evaluation

A stigmergy-based analysis of city hotspots to discover trends and anomalies in urban transportation usage
A key aspect of a sustainable urban transportation system is the
effectiveness of transportation policies. To be effective, a policy has to
consider a broad range of elements, such as pollution emission, traffic flow,
and human mobility. Due to the complexity and variability of these elements in
the urban area, to produce effective policies remains a very challenging task.
With the introduction of the smart city paradigm, a widely available amount of
data can be generated in the urban spaces. Such data can be a fundamental
source of knowledge to improve policies because they can reflect the
sustainability issues underlying the city. In this context, we propose an
approach to exploit urban positioning data based on stigmergy, a bio-inspired
mechanism providing scalar and temporal aggregation of samples. By employing
stigmergy, samples in proximity with each other are aggregated into a
functional structure called trail. The trail summarizes relevant dynamics in
data and allows matching them, providing a measure of their similarity.
Moreover, this mechanism can be specialized to unfold specific dynamics.
Specifically, we identify high-density urban areas (i.e hotspots), analyze
their activity over time, and unfold anomalies. Moreover, by matching activity
patterns, a continuous measure of the dissimilarity with respect to the typical
activity pattern is provided. This measure can be used by policy makers to
evaluate the effect of policies and change them dynamically. As a case study,

Big Data has significant impact in developing functional smart cities and supporting modern societies. In this paper, we investigate the importance of Big Data in modern life and economy, and discuss challenges arising from Big Data utilization. Different computational intelligence techniques have been considered as tools for Big Data analytics. We also explore the powerful combination of Big Data and Computational Intelligence (CI) and identify a number of areas, where novel applications in real world smart city problems can be developed by utilizing these powerful tools and techniques. We present a case study for intelligent transportation in the context of a smart city, and a novel data modelling methodology based on a biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM).
