    Combining image regions and human activity for indirect object recognition in indoor wide-angle views

    Traditional methods of object recognition are reliant on shape and so are very difficult to apply in cluttered, wideangle and low-detail views such as surveillance scenes. To address this, a method of indirect object recognition is proposed, where human activity is used to infer both the location and identity of objects. No shape analysis is necessary. The concept is dubbed \u27interaction signatures\u27, since the premise is that a human will interact with objects in ways characteristic of the function of that object - for example, a person sits in a chair and drinks from a cup. The human-centred approach means that recognition is possible in low-detail views and is largely invariant to the shape of objects within the same functional class. This paper implements a Bayesian network for classifying region patches with object labels, building upon our previous work in automatically segmenting and recognising a human\u27s interactions with the objects. Experiments show that interaction signatures can successfully find and label objects in low-detail views and are equally effective at recognising test objects that differ markedly in appearance from the training objects.<br /

    Advances in Monocular Exemplar-based Human Body Pose Analysis: Modeling, Detection and Tracking

Esta temática presenta un amplio rango de potenciales aplicaciones en video-vigilancia, video-juegos o aplicaciones biomédicas. Las técnicas basadas en patrones han tenido éxito, sin embargo, su precisión depende de la similitud del punto de vista de la cámara y de las propiedades de la escena entre las imágenes de entrenamiento y las de prueba. Teniendo en cuenta un conjunto de datos de entrenamiento capturado mediante un número reducido de cámaras fijas, paralelas al suelo, se han identificado y analizado tres escenarios posibles con creciente nivel de dificultad: 1) una cámara estática paralela al suelo, 2) una cámara de vigilancia fija con un ángulo de visión considerablemente diferente, y 3) una secuencia de video capturada con una cámara en movimiento o simplemente una sola imagen estática

    F-formation Detection: Individuating Free-standing Conversational Groups in Images

    Detection of groups of interacting people is a very interesting and useful task in many modern technologies, with application fields spanning from video-surveillance to social robotics. In this paper we first furnish a rigorous definition of group considering the background of the social sciences: this allows us to specify many kinds of group, so far neglected in the Computer Vision literature. On top of this taxonomy, we present a detailed state of the art on the group detection algorithms. Then, as a main contribution, we present a brand new method for the automatic detection of groups in still images, which is based on a graph-cuts framework for clustering individuals; in particular we are able to codify in a computational sense the sociological definition of F-formation, that is very useful to encode a group having only proxemic information: position and orientation of people. We call the proposed method Graph-Cuts for F-formation (GCFF). We show how GCFF definitely outperforms all the state of the art methods in terms of different accuracy measures (some of them are brand new), demonstrating also a strong robustness to noise and versatility in recognizing groups of various cardinality.Comment: 32 pages, submitted to PLOS On

    Recording behaviour of indoor-housed farm animals automatically using machine vision technology: a systematic review

    Large-scale phenotyping of animal behaviour traits is time consuming and has led to increased demand for technologies that can automate these procedures. Automated tracking of animals has been successful in controlled laboratory settings, but recording from animals in large groups in highly variable farm settings presents challenges. The aim of this review is to provide a systematic overview of the advances that have occurred in automated, high throughput image detection of farm animal behavioural traits with welfare and production implications. Peer-reviewed publications written in English were reviewed systematically following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. After identification, screening, and assessment for eligibility, 108 publications met these specifications and were included for qualitative synthesis. Data collected from the papers included camera specifications, housing conditions, group size, algorithm details, procedures, and results. Most studies utilized standard digital colour video cameras for data collection, with increasing use of 3D cameras in papers published after 2013. Papers including pigs (across production stages) were the most common (n = 63). The most common behaviours recorded included activity level, area occupancy, aggression, gait scores, resource use, and posture. Our review revealed many overlaps in methods applied to analysing behaviour, and most studies started from scratch instead of building upon previous work. Training and validation sample sizes were generally small (mean±s.d. groups = 3.8±5.8) and in data collection and testing took place in relatively controlled environments. To advance our ability to automatically phenotype behaviour, future research should build upon existing knowledge and validate technology under commercial settings and publications should explicitly describe recording conditions in detail to allow studies to be reproduced

    Quick, accurate, smart: 3D computer vision technology helps assessing confined animals' behaviour

    Mankind directly controls the environment and lifestyles of several domestic species for purposes ranging from production and research to conservation and companionship. These environments and lifestyles may not offer these animals the best quality of life. Behaviour is a direct reflection of how the animal is coping with its environment. Behavioural indicators are thus among the preferred parameters to assess welfare. However, behavioural recording (usually from video) can be very time consuming and the accuracy and reliability of the output rely on the experience and background of the observers. The outburst of new video technology and computer image processing gives the basis for promising solutions. In this pilot study, we present a new prototype software able to automatically infer the behaviour of dogs housed in kennels from 3D visual data and through structured machine learning frameworks. Depth information acquired through 3D features, body part detection and training are the key elements that allow the machine to recognise postures, trajectories inside the kennel and patterns of movement that can be later labelled at convenience. The main innovation of the software is its ability to automatically cluster frequently observed temporal patterns of movement without any pre-set ethogram. Conversely, when common patterns are defined through training, a deviation from normal behaviour in time or between individuals could be assessed. The software accuracy in correctly detecting the dogs' behaviour was checked through a validation process. An automatic behaviour recognition system, independent from human subjectivity, could add scientific knowledge on animals' quality of life in confinement as well as saving time and resources. This 3D framework was designed to be invariant to the dog's shape and size and could be extended to farm, laboratory and zoo quadrupeds in artificial housing. The computer vision technique applied to this software is innovative in non-human animal behaviour science. Further improvements and validation are needed, and future applications and limitations are discussed.</p

    Combining discriminative and model based approaches for hand pose estimation

    In this paper we present an approach to hand pose estimation that combines both discriminative and modelbased methods to overcome the limitations of each technique in isolation. A Randomised Decision Forests (RDF) is used to provide an initial estimate of the regions of the hand. This initial segmentation provides constraints to which a 3D model is fitted using Rigid Body Dynamics. Model fitting is guided using point to surface constraints which bind a kinematic model of the hand to the depth cloud using the segmentation of the discriminative approach. This combines the advantages of both techniques, reducing the training requirements for discriminative classification and simplifying the optimization process involved in model fitting by incorporating physical constraints from the segmentation. Our experiments on two challenging sequences show that this combined method outperforms the current state-of-the-art approach

    Motion capture based on RGBD data from multiple sensors for avatar animation

    With recent advances in technology and emergence of affordable RGB-D sensors for a wider range of users, markerless motion capture has become an active field of research both in computer vision and computer graphics. In this thesis, we designed a POC (Proof of Concept) for a new tool that enables us to perform motion capture by using a variable number of commodity RGB-D sensors of different brands and technical specifications on constraint-less layout environments. The main goal of this work is to provide a tool with motion capture capabilities by using a handful of RGB-D sensors, without imposing strong requirements in terms of lighting, background or extension of the motion capture area. Of course, the number of RGB-D sensors needed is inversely proportional to their resolution, and directly proportional to the size of the area to track to. Built on top of the OpenNI 2 library, we made this POC compatible with most of the nonhigh-end RGB-D sensors currently available in the market. Due to the lack of resources on a single computer, in order to support more than a couple of sensors working simultaneously, we need a setup composed of multiple computers. In order to keep data coherency and synchronization across sensors and computers, our tool makes use of a semi-automatic calibration method and a message-oriented network protocol. From color and depth data given by a sensor, we can also obtain a 3D pointcloud representation of the environment. By combining pointclouds from multiple sensors, we can collect a complete and animated 3D pointcloud that can be visualized from any viewpoint. Given a 3D avatar model and its corresponding attached skeleton, we can use an iterative optimization method (e.g. Simplex) to find a fit between each pointcloud frame and a skeleton configuration, resulting in 3D avatar animation when using such skeleton configurations as key frames
