The quality of experience of emerging display technologies
As new display technologies emerge and become part of everyday life, the understanding of the visual experience they provide becomes more relevant. The cognition of perception is the most vital component of visual experience; however, it is not the only cognition that contributes to the complex overall experience of the end-user. Expectations can create significant cognitive bias that may even override what the user
genuinely perceives. Even if a visualization technology is somewhat novel, expectations can be fuelled by prior experiences gained from using similar displays and, more importantly, even a single word or an acronym may induce serious preconceptions, especially if such word suggests excellence in quality. In this interdisciplinary Ph.D. thesis, the effect of minimal, one-word labels on the Quality of Experience (QoE) is investigated in a series of subjective tests. In the studies carried out on an ultra-high-definition (UHD) display, UHD video contents
were directly compared to their HD counterparts, with and without labels explicitly informing the test participants about the resolution of each stimulus. The experiments on High Dynamic Range (HDR) visualization addressed the effect of the word âpremiumâ on the quality aspects of HDR video, and also how this may affect the perceived duration of stalling events. In order to support the findings,
additional tests were carried out comparing the stalling detection thresholds of HDR video with conventional Low Dynamic Range (LDR) video. The third emerging technology addressed by this thesis is light field visualization. Due to its novel nature and the lack of comprehensive, exhaustive research on the QoE of light field displays and content parameters at the time of this thesis, instead
of investigating the labeling effect, four phases of subjective studies were performed on light field QoE. The first phases started with fundamental research, and the experiments progressed towards the concept and evaluation of the dynamic adaptive streaming of light field video, introduced in the final phase

Evaluation and modelling of perceived audio quality in popular music, towards intelligent music production
This thesis addresses three fundamental questions: What is mixing? What makes a high-quality mix? How can high-quality mixes be automatically generated? While these may seem essential to the very foundations of intelligent music production, this thesis argues that they have not been sufficiently addressed in previous studies. An important contribution is the questioning of previously-held definitions of a 'mix'. Experiments were conducted in which participants used traditional mixing interfaces to create mixes using gain, panning and equalisation. The data was analysed in a novel 'mix-space', 'panning-space' and 'tone-space' in order to determine if there is a consensus in how these tools are used. Methods were developed to create mixes by populating the mix-space according to parametric models. These mixes were characterised by signal features, the distributions of which suggest tolerance bounds for automated mixing systems. This was complemented by a study of real-world music mixes, containing hundreds of mixes each for ten songs, collected from on-line communities. Mixes were shown to vary along four dimensions: loudness/dynamics, brightness, bass and stereo width. The variations between individual mix engineers were also studied, indicating a small effect of the mix engineer on mix preference ratings (eta2 = 0.021). Perceptual audio evaluation revealed that listeners appreciate 'quality' in a variety of ways, depending on the circumstances. In commercially-released music, 'quality' was related to the loudness/dynamic dimension. In mixes, 'quality' is highly correlated with 'preference'. To create mixes which maximised perceived quality, a novel semi-automatic mixing system was developed using evolutionary computation, wherein a population of mixes, generated in the mix-space, is guided by the subjective evaluations of the listener. This system was evaluated by a panel of users, who used it to create their ideal mixes, rather than the technically-correct mixes which previous systems strived for. It is hoped that this thesis encourages the community to pursue subjectively motivated methods when designing systems for music-mixing
Congress UPV Proceedings of the 21ST International Conference on Science and Technology Indicators
This is the book of proceedings of the 21st Science and Technology Indicators Conference that took place
in ValĂšncia (Spain) from 14th to 16th of September 2016.
The conference theme for this year, âPeripheries, frontiers and beyondâ aimed to study the development and
use of Science, Technology and Innovation indicators in spaces that have not been the focus of current indicator
development, for example, in the Global South, or the Social Sciences and Humanities.
The exploration to the margins and beyond proposed by the theme has brought to the STI Conference an
interesting array of new contributors from a variety of fields and geographies.
This yearâs conference had a record 382 registered participants from 40 different countries, including 23
European, 9 American, 4 Asia-Pacific, 4 Africa and Near East. About 26% of participants came from outside
of Europe.
There were also many participants (17%) from organisations outside academia including governments (8%),
businesses (5%), foundations (2%) and international organisations (2%). This is particularly important in a
field that is practice-oriented.
The chapters of the proceedings attest to the breadth of issues discussed. Infrastructure, benchmarking
and use of innovation indicators, societal impact and mission oriented-research, mobility and careers, social
sciences and the humanities, participation and culture, gender, and altmetrics, among others.
We hope that the diversity of this Conference has fostered productive dialogues and synergistic ideas and
made a contribution, small as it may be, to the development and use of indicators that, being more inclusive,
will foster a more inclusive and fair world

Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion. Collected Works, Volume 5
This ïŹfth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different ïŹelds of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered.
First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modiïŹed Proportional ConïŹict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classiïŹers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes.
Because more applications of DSmT have emerged in the past years since the apparition of the fourth book of DSmT in 2015, the second part of this volume is about selected applications of DSmT mainly in building change detection, object recognition, quality of data association in tracking, perception in robotics, risk assessment for torrent protection and multi-criteria decision-making, multi-modal image fusion, coarsening techniques, recommender system, levee characterization and assessment, human heading perception, trust assessment, robotics, biometrics, failure detection, GPS systems, inter-criteria analysis, group decision, human activity recognition, storm prediction, data association for autonomous vehicles, identiïŹcation of maritime vessels, fusion of support vector machines (SVM), Silx-Furtif RUST code library for information fusion including PCR rules, and network for ship classiïŹcation.
Finally, the third part presents interesting contributions related to belief functions in general published or presented along the years since 2015. These contributions are related with decision-making under uncertainty, belief approximations, probability transformations, new distances between belief functions, non-classical multi-criteria decision-making problems with belief functions, generalization of Bayes theorem, image processing, data association, entropy and cross-entropy measures, fuzzy evidence numbers, negator of belief mass, human activity recognition, information fusion for breast cancer therapy, imbalanced data classiïŹcation, and hybrid techniques mixing deep learning with belief functions as well
